Asking for a good reading...

Wed Dec 05, 2018 3:15 pm

Hi guys,

I need to get some new books. Recently I found a Rolling Stones biography in a givebox and read it but the only positive thing I can say about it is that it made me consider reading similar biographies. The book was not only quite dull in its pace (500 pages for the first 15 years and then in supersonic mode through the next 20 years) but also completely uncritical towards the band. Basically, it repeated the Rolling Stones' "songwriting - sex - drugs - concert - drugs - sex - songwriting - drugs - sex - misdemaenors" circle ad nauseam. After 200 pages it got really boring.

However, I'm now in the market for some interesting books on the Beatles, Queen, Dire Straits, Sting or similar musicians. Can you give me some advice on a good read, either in English or German?

Thanks!
Bart

I remember enjoying the Richard Branson autobiography 'Losing My Virginity'. Obviously he's not a musician, but there is a great deal about the music industry in the 60s and 70s centered around the rise of Virgin Records and Virgin Megastore. It also goes into the creation of Virgin Atlantic which may be of interest to an Anet subscriber.

“Thinking Fast and Slow” is definitely my new favorite.

It changed the way I think, it points at how our brains can make flaws in their logical thinking without us even realizing it. Strongly recommended.

Although that topic is not within my current focus of music-related books, it certainly sounds interesting. Is it well written for the layman?

Again, not remotely music-related but a great read nonetheless with stunning photos as well- Life Above The Jungle Floor by Donald Perry.

Led Zeppelin: Hammer of the Gods

The Doors, specifically Jim Morrison: No One Here Gets Out Alive

I read them both as a teen. I can still remember specific events from both books, though No One Here Gets Out Alive is the more memorable one.

Well, if we're going off the topic reservation a little bit, I recommend Blink: The Power of Thinking Without Thinking
