75% of Americans apologizes for Trump abroad

Tue Dec 18, 2018 9:45 am

What’s eating American C.E.O.s?

We have some insight, thanks to the Yale C.E.O. Summit with Jeffrey Sonnenfeld last week in New York. The event was strictly off the record, but DealBook has the results of a survey of 134 business leaders who were there:

President Trump. Three in four C.E.O.s said they often apologized to their international business partners about the president’s messages. Eighty-seven percent said Mr. Trump’s negotiating style had cost the nation the trust of its allies, and three-quarters felt he wasn’t leading effectively on issues critical to U.S. national security.

Trade and Huawei. Just over three-quarters said it was appropriate for Canada to arrest Meng Wanzhou, the C.F.O. of the Chinese tech giant Huawei. But just one in five supported the idea of President Trump intervening in the case. Three-fifths said the issues surrounding Huawei and Ms. Meng would affect trade tensions, and just under half said that they could affect future travel plans.

A recession. Almost half of the respondents thought the U.S. could wind up in a recession by the end of the month. The greatest threats to U.S. markets, 67 percent said, are U.S. political instability and trade negotiations.

Tech regulation. An overwhelming message here: 90 percent of respondents said technology companies needed to be regulated more closely.

Makes sense. Business likes stability to thrive, the Trump administration is unstable, so it is meeting with disapproval.
Many happy landings, greetings from The Netherlands!

Not all stability is good. Many countries have had very stable / government affiliated, very unsuccessful economies. It sounds like the CEOs are mad about the trust of allies issue but they support Trump on the trade issue.

Misleading thread title. Should read "75% of American CEOs" not "75% of Americans".

Did the survey explore the reasons for the answers the CEOs gave? Are they just telling their foreign partners what they think they want to hear?

What they want to hear is:

a) yes, we will absorb all extra costs arising from tariffs or
b) yes, you can buy directly from our China (Vietnam, Thailand, .... ....) factory in the future.

Yes, I ignored that thread because it was patently ridiculous ;)
I'm a Trump supporter, but any suggestion that his approval rating is at 60% is preposterous on the face of it.

I was out in the country here in England and in came an American lady. A texan visiting her sister. She got talking to a local and such was his arrogance to assume that she disliked him. Quite the opposite in fact. He then chose to close the conversation down. Tolerance and all that.

Why should we apologize for Trump or care what other countries think. Not to long ago in France, they were chanting "We want Trump". If some other country doesnt like Trump thats their problem, and by no means should we apologize for a man who is the greatest President ever! They may as well get used to him, he will be in office till Jan 2025!

I'm afraid you're gonna be right. The Democrats are worse* than the Buffalo Bills (my team) at blowing easily winnable contests

*Worse, or better? Both sound kinda off. My point is 2020 is easily winnable, but leave it to la resistance to snatch defeat from the jaws of victory

I would be fast to apologize for the behavior of our horrid President. Hopefully he will be indicted by at least one state (NY) before winter is over. Between impeachments and indictments we are slowly discovering how fast Trump is going to want to go into hiding - probably in Russia.

I'm an Australian. People I meet and know in the USA apologise for Trump when I'm there, let alone overseas.

I still remember polling in 2016-17 which showed support for Trump amongst major trading partners was highest in Australia at 15%. It would have declined since then.

I have made it clear if get into a conversation with politics when outside the USA or with foreign nationals in the USA that I despise Trump in general and ashamed he is our President.

Most tour guides I've talked to have been quite forthright about it and say 90% of their US clients hate him--anecdotal but wouldn't surprise me. I'd bet a small minority of Trump supporters even have a passport, let alone travel overseas, what with all those no-go zones full of moose lambs in London and Paris and triggering foreign languages they can't understand, like the queen's English...

I really wish you guys would take Murdoch back. He's contributed immensely to brainwashing the population into supporting Trump.

As for me, Trump is so embarrassing I'm afraid to leave the country at all while he is president.

I'm thinking about a t-shirt that says "I voted for Hillary" in a lot of languages. At least people will know how I feel about the POS.

BTW, What ever happened to those brilliant statues of the Naked Trump? They should be in museums around the country, or on loan to overseas museums, like the British Museum.

I’d include the average Joe as well, within the first sentence or two when you meet an American they almost always apologise for Trump.

75% of my US contacts avoids discussing their president. Reasonable, social and intelligent people, welcome everywhere.

I think the opposite was truth before Trump. The previous Prez had respect all over the world. I guess reliability was a big part.

Meanwhile those same CEO's are wiping away their crocodile tears with hundred dollar bills they lobbied to get. I'll bet most CEO's voted R.

I don’t know why everyone feels this need to randomly share their politics with others.

I don’t care who you voted for. I especially don’t care who you voted for if you’re from another country. No need to apologize to me for anything. It’s your country. Do what you want.

It's been over 30 years since he decided being an American was better for his business - no deal. His malign influence continues in Austrlaia, unfortunately.

As for not leaving the USA during a Trump presidency, the rest of the world understands that most Americans who travel outside the USA didn't vote for him.

That’s fake news right there! Do you have any real stats or just made it up? Sounds like the latter.

Sorry first of all I am not a news source so I can't make fake news.

Second the article doesnt rebuttle my statement that people that vote trump would not travel oversees. The main point of the article is that of those who voted trump are not workings class. But they do with 69 have no colleugues education.
