Have you done a long distance motorcycle / car / bicycle tour?

Tue Jan 08, 2019 6:44 pm

Hey all,

It's clear that all of us here love airplanes. For the past eight years I've been a professional pilot and I fly a lot more than I'd like to (obviously, it's work). I average about 60 - 70 flights per month, depending on how busy I am and how many sectors I'm flying. That also includes commuting to / from home to my base.

Needless to say, I'm a little sick of air travel and lately I've taken up a new hobby: road trips, especially by motorcycle. Have you done any long road trips on motorcycles / cars / bicycles? (Feel free to post pics)

I've done a few nice trips on my motorcycle:
Winnipeg - Mount Rushmore - Denver - Moab - Monument Valley - Flagstaff - Los Angeles - San Francisco - Seattle - Vancouver, BC - Winnipeg (10,300 km)
Winnipeg - Minneapolis - Chicago - Detroit - Windsor (1,900 km)

My bicycle, Surly Long Haul Trucker - Deluxe:
I've done quite a few tours in Europe and Canada; the longest ones being:
Passau - Linz - Grein - Melk - Vienna (twice)
Toronto - Hamilton - Port Dover - Leamington - Windsor (Ontario)

I love Flagstaff. Driving cross country in a car not a bike since 2001. My favorite is leaving PHX at 73F and getting up there in the 40s. My least favorite was in a white out blizzard. I have done Mt. Ruishmore too. That was a great experience.

Not bicycle tours as in like what you’ve done, but supported rides.

Probably favourite was Innsbruck-Innsbruck, Innsbruck-Vipiteno, Vipiteno-Brixen, Brixen-Brixen, Brixen-Canazei, Canazei-Canazei, Canazei-Venice.

Done France too, but it wasn’t quite as nice as the Tirol region (Dolomites). The hospitality in the the Tirol area was exceptional everywhere we were. Brixen in particular is a favourite of mine. Innsbruck also is a very nice place. I want to go back to both.

Riding however a loop out of and back to Innsbruck in freezing cold and rain/snow ranks as the most character building day I’ve had on a bicycle. Very cold!

A two week trip around Poland summer of 2015, solo. Stayed in hotels and guesthouses, was around 1900km. I have to dig out some pictures from the trip, this one was taken the morning of my first day, just before I left.

I've driven Toronto to San Francisco a few times, Toronto - Naples, Florida several times, quite a bit around Europe and plan on doing more.

Detroit-Chattanooga-Blue Ridge Parkway-Harrisburg-Detroit on a 1984 Harley Low Rider back in 1988. Fun memories but I'd never do it again.
I never did bicycle touring but I did do several centuries and metric centuries in my time.

My longest bike ride was from my home town of Utrecht, the Netherlands to Barcelona, Spain. I liked it, together with a friend of mine. It was around 1.500km. We took everything with us, including a tent.
Many happy landings, greetings from The Netherlands!

From what I mentioned before:

The Fiat and the Transit were both jammed with stuff to keep almost 30 people going for a bit more than a week. First photo is Innsbruck outside Ramada Tivoli. That city is fantastic. The Mayor of Innsbruck (Kristin Opitz-Plorer at the time) really rolled out the red carpet for us.

I've done two wheels most of my life. Made it over Snoquamie pass on a Jawa 175 when I 16. Spent years riding the back roads of California with a motorcycle camping club, 1,000 mile weekends was not unusual. I was almost commuting between Seattle and San Jose on my BMW K100 once a month or so for awhile. That bike and I were like one, it had almost 150,000 miles when I sold it.. Worked as a bicycle messenger in Manhattan, if that counts. Tried to ride a bicycle from Paris to the Algarve way back, only made it to somewhere in France and had to sell the bike - I ate all my money. Had to finish that journey on a train until I got kicked off and hitched the rest. I had plans once to tour Italy on a moped but that didn't pan out.
More driving than I can remember, the US west coast most every year. Cross country several times by car and by thumb. I always wanted to ride the rails.

Did a European Tour in the BMW 530d; Bonn, Copenhagen, Berlin, Prague, Milano, Nice, Barcelona, Toulouse, Normandy, Brussels, Bonn. Using mainly highways, it took 10 days to complete. Also took the Boxster from Copenhagen to the North Cape, up via Sweden and down via Norway. 14 days in total, which lead me to believe one will be hard pressed to find scenery more beautiful than the Norwegian coastline. One will be equally hard pressed to find anywhere as expensive as Norway, particularly if one likes a beer in the evening to wash down the travel dust!

Back when Iceland's volcano erupted I had some meetings which I needed to go to so drove from Norway to Latvia via Sweden for my first meeting, then from Latvia to Milan Italy via Poland, Germany, and Switzerland for my second. The trip home was Germany, Denmark, Norway. All in 5712km in a MINI Clubman Cooper D, it was a fun trip, I was also paid 17,000 NOK in driving expenses.

You should do New Zealand's South Island, its possibly even more impressive, the Southern Alps are higher than Norway's mountains and the beer is cheaper.

Back in the early 80ies, when we were still in High School, we used to take our bikes to France or Sweden and spend our summer holidays touring along the coastline or inland, sleeping in tents or hostels. Our parents would just let us go - those were the days...

I did some cycling in the last years.

Drove my bike from here (Bern, Switzerland) to Lisbon in Portugal.
The Route was crossing france to Bordeaux, then south along the coast and over the Pyrenees and then westward again along the Douro river to Porto and south along the coast to Lisbon. Total distance was roughly 2300 kilometers.

It was one of the most amazing things i ever did and i really enjoyed it!

I slept in Hostels mostly as i dont have a tent and was travelling rather light to get some distance every day.
Mostly i kept track with komoot: https://www.komoot.de/tour/15459940?ref=wtd

This summer i did another longish tour and drove from Lyon in France down to Marseilles via the famous Mont Ventoux.

I always loved cycling but i only recently started to do longer trips on the road.

Hey guys,
In various cars over the past few decades I've done one memorable circumsnaivgation of Britain keeping to the coast as much as possible, with the far north of Scotland and Devon/Cornwall my favourite parts during the three week trip. We stayed in BnBs the whole way except for one memorable night in Glasgow in an upmarket hotel due to all the BnBs being full! We never stayed in the same place more than one night.
I did a second trip over a two week period years later exploring the interior of Britain, staying with relatives and in BnBs.
In my homeland of Australia I've done many many road trips. The longest would be to the Northern Territory and return from Sydney via the NSW north coast, Brisbane, Townsville and across to Mt Isa before entering the NT. I returned along the same route.
I regularly do the 2000km round trip to Melbourne and environs from my home near Sydney : maybe three or four times a year. Done the overland trip to Adelaide and on to Whyalla a few times as well.
Driven around both islands of New Zealand a few times.
I would love to do a road trip across the US and back again, on a different route. My best mate and I have discussed doing one many times over the years, mapping the route via aviation 'must sees' like Victorville and the Boeing factory.
I haven't ever done a long bike ride, but 'someone' is trying to talk me into a extended escorted bike ride through the wine regions of France...
Cheers,
Bunumuring

Done myself such trip a couple times - first from Manitoba to Vancouver along Trans Canada Route 1, then - from Seattle to Chicago along I-90.
