Trucking rates down

US and most likely Canada average rate per mile in the dry van trucking business is at a 2-year low below the $2. Low fuel prices, government shutdown and correlation with supply and demand, and.. signs of a recession no matter how sharp is it?! As per transborder traffic with Canada or Mexico, effects of the shutdown, if any, would increase rates cause there will be loads and trucks but slowed customs clearance and extended time linening up at the booth. Question now is how the newly established small companies that rised during the price hike times will react and how the used trucks market and the new trucks orders will look like? A trailing story..

Could it be that a few too many trucking firms entered the business?

Not sure about firms, but capacity is up. Fuel is trending down over the year though as well.

Economy is softening on the retail side. It's very evident in the freight market right now. Nobody is willing to say it though....

I have not lived near tracks for a while, but I remember seeing trailers on flatbed rail cars. How much does that effect prices?

Retail sales were up 5.1% over the holidays. Do you have something more recent?

Hopefully fewer trucks are on the road so fewer greenhouse gas emissions are happening. We don’t need more of this dirty, toxic industry. We need less.

truck - train combination proved efficient economy here in europe. but many transportation companies still do not want to use the intermodal shift transport method. because a driver costs less than a train wagon. this is sad, because truck driver's wages are the main topic when talking about road transportation fares.
although I own a truck driving license, I never did it for a job. it is a hell of a job. and it shouldn't, because driver's fatigue is the main reason for road accidents involving a truck, and most of the times, leaves people dead or badly injured.
so neither fuel prices nor demand / offer (it is always high, and rising) affect fares. not as much as driver's wages. here in EU mainland average prices are about € 2 / km, that means, still higher than in the US, if there is $ 2 / mile (1 mile = 1,6 km) but still some drivers do not reach € 1500 / month wage, some not even the half of it!

If it’s by truck, he doesn’t want— fresh fruit and veg, nope, not by truck; Amazon, only if by electric car powered by the Sun; new roof, forget it if it involves a truck, just use an umbrella to watch AOC spout off.

It's all much more complicated than "retail sales were up" or "retail is softening" soundbytes. Like with anything, it's shades of gray. Retail-rooted transportation needs are "soft" right now for a wide variety of reasons that aren't necessarily aligned with current point-of-sale data.

Conversely, industrial-rooted transportation is strong right now.

And everyone is going to be twiddling their thumbs at one point or another from this week through the end-ish of March as the annual impact of Lunar New Year cascades from Asian origin points through to Western destinations.

Well, New England Motor Freight just filed for Chapter 11.

NEMF brought some of this on itself, but there is also a large degree of culpability with big shippers who focus solely on driving rates into the abyss.
