Looks like the Governor of Virginia has a lot of explaining to do

Fri Feb 01, 2019 10:47 pm

https://www.cnn.com/2019/02/01/politics ... index.html

medical school yearbook page of Virginia Democratic Gov. Ralph Northam shows a photograph of two people, one in blackface and one in a KKK hood and robe.

The photograph, which was obtained by CNN affiliate WTKR, appears in the 1984 yearbook for Eastern Virginia Medical School yearbook and shows two people -- one in blackface and one in the KKK's signature white hood and robes.

Going to be pretty embarrassing for the Virginia Dems if this plays out.
Where ever you go, there you are.

Typical hypocrisy by ever-corrupt politicians. Then again, probably far more widely done and said than the sanctimonious would admit.

Yikes. This is awful. It's my hope that he steps down immediately.

Also if there was a firm that was hired to do oppo research on him during the campaign and they missed this I hope whomever paid them is clawing their money back.

There's a tremendous difference between someone who may have held certain beliefs or exhibited certain behavior in the past, and those who continue to exhibit certain behavior through coded statements, dog whistles, gaslighting, etc. If you can't see that difference, well, just goes to show how absolutely cynical and smug the Republican base has become.

That said, his credibility is in the toilet if it is true. Nothing short of a true acknowledgment of past beliefs and how hurtful and inappropriate they were, and a credible and sincere explanation for how those beliefs evolved would be necessary to stay in the position, but it's probably a bridge too far.

He needs to resign. This stuff wasn’t acceptable when it was being done on the reg through the 60s, there’s simply no excuse for it in 1984. There isn’t a credible excuse he can use to justify this BS.

After Kavanaugh and this, seems like the school yearbook is the first place to go for dirt!

Aviationaware being sanctimonious and hypocritical. What a shocker.

I just don’t see the logic. Religious right says Trump is a “new man.” Unlike Trump, Northam didn’t spew racist vitriol that would be associated with his historical behavior on the campaign trail or since. Please tell me what the difference is, oh Supreme Arbiter of Intellectual Consistency.

The photo is shockingly distasteful but it is also from his youth. I did some things in my youth that I am appalled by today (and would be shocked by as well, if it wasn't me who did and knew about them for 25 years now :boggled: ).

I think his statement of apology hit all the right notes. I've never been to Virginia but if this was my governor I wouldn't want him to resign over this.

Yep, he needs to resign.

The photo I aw appeears to from the 50s....in which case, I'd say 'in the 50's it was a common insulting which many whites partook.

...but it's from the 1980s, exit stage left...

If we fired everyone who made bad choices in the past then no one would have a job or hold public office. At least he acknowledged what he did was wrong and apologized. If he tried burying the truth then yes he should resign if one of the people in the photo is him, but he told the truth which is shocking coming from a politician.

What? You think doctors don’t hold prejudices against people outside their own? It’s hardwired. I was in South Africa and heard a black man say the most awful things about Zimbabwe refugees—Trump would have blushed in embarrassment.

You've missed my point. It doesn't matter that he was training to be a doctor. It matters that he was a fully grown 25 year old adult when he did this, had it photographed, and allowed it to be put in a yearbook. He wasn't some idiot kid or teenager.

Interesting, the Lt. Governor is a Black man. He could become the 2nd Black man to hold the VA governorship.
First of all who was supervising and set up the contents of this 'yearbook' ? Seems they were the kind of people I would want as a doctor. I bet there were no only a very few Black students at the school at the time. Sorry, but has to resign so Democrat don't look like hypocrites.

Clinton lied under oath - as President, not as a college kid - and didn't resign, so the Dems might have less to lose than you think.

I realize you probably didn't know this. But Hollywood is a city in southern California. This is actually a different place than Virginia, which is in the mid-Atlantic region of the east coast.

It is therefore unlikely that the governorship of VA is important in Hollywood.

I’m sorry, what?!

I’d say it wouldn’t surprise me as I don’t know why the NE, Midwest, and West Coast get a free pass on racism (seems to be a burden for the South) but methinks you’re making sh*t up or hang out with some real shady characters.

But, yes, Texas and Houston in particular are pretty woke.

1) FTMCPIUS, what would you expect them to say?

2) Have you done an exhaustive survey in the 4 hours since the news broke, or are you just been dramatic?

At least wait a couple days for things to settle before implying the real victims here are oppressed white Republicans who get unfairly accused of racism.

I vote for waiting a week or two before calling for his resignation just to call out conservatives for actually *defending* and re-electing their politicians when they do similar things. For instance: how does Steve King keep getting re-elected? Why has he not been forced to resign after his constant racism related scandals?

Oh yeah. Florida just elected Desantis. How about President "fine people on both sides" ? If we're going to make a point of taking the moral high ground, make the point first before media attention does off after actually taking the moral high ground. Dems need to up their messaging game. The moral high ground takes sacrifice, play it up more.

That is disgusting behavior. We all did disgusting things in university. Brains not fully developed, young naive, alcohol etc. Do we need to disclose all? Seems more like a witchhunt if you can be confronted with something you did over 30 years ago.

It's more than likely the governor doesn't have a racist bone in his body and actually fully understands how disgusting that was, and not just because he's been caught.

The real issue is the role "race" has played in our history and the extremely deep wounds it has left in the African American community. Yeah, things might have gotten better over time but black people are still disadvantaged in this country and they still face some pretty extreme racism.

Not doing anything at all to penalize the governor will reopen those wounds, it sends a message that white people with power will always get a free pass.

Northam says he will not be resigning. While what he did in 1984 is certainly unbecoming of an elected official, I have a far bigger issue with his promotion of killing a baby during birth.

Ah of course.

You must really hate Rick Snyder and what he did, then.

Would you consider yourself a “moderate”?

As someone pointed out earlier - How in the world did this not come up during the governors election cycle? I mean, it's in a yearbook. What an absolute failure of opposition research.

Yes, I agree, he was fairly elected. He should be able to stay in office. Let the voters decide next round.

The state of Virginia only has governors serve 1 - 4 year term, they cannot run for the Governor's post again. However, he could lose in a run for election for another position. I am not sure if they have Impeachment proceedings for Governors in VA.

Perhaps. But, it sounds like he's got a ton of people in his own party that are calling for his resignation. It'll be interesting to see how it plays out.
