France recalls ambassador to Italy

PARIS — France has recalled its ambassador to Italy in response to verbal attacks from Rome and other provocations, the French Foreign Ministry announced Thursday.

The recall was a marked departure from the typically congenial politics of postwar Western Europe, where differences among neighboring allies have rarely reached a fever pitch. The last time France withdrew its ambassador to Rome was in June 1940, when Italy was under the control of fascist dictator Benito Mussolini and declared war on France and Britain.

“France has been, for several months, the object of repeated accusations, unfounded attacks and outrageous declarations that everyone knows and can recognize,” the Foreign Ministry said in a statement. “This is unprecedented since the end of the war.”

Those criticisms have come primarily from Italy’s populist leaders, Interior Minister Matteo Salvini and Deputy Prime Minister Luigi Di Maio, who have used France’s pro-Europe president, Emmanuel Macron, as a foil for their Italy-first agenda.

Being French with Italian roots, I have a strange feeling about this.

Good call from Macron. Salivini was doing that on purpose to try and undermine him.

It’s not the first time France has retreated.

I can’t believe France still collects a colonial tax.

You're right to not believe it since it's fake news.

Should Austria have recalled its ambassador to France as well when the French challenged the legitimacy of Jorg Haider?

Its sad that Italy's political leaders are getting ugly - looks to me that the country is stuck with a bunch of "Junior" Trumps. Since I love traveling to Italy (and France) I'm wondering how nasty things are going to get. Is it going to be safe to travel there this summer?

There are European elections soon and the Italian populist coalition government isn't exactly able to present any stellar successes to their impatient backers who had hoped for unicorn filled uplands (sorry no more left probably… all in use in the UK already… ROTFL), so they are now trying very hard to do what populist/nationalist always do to mask their own massive failure: stir up some international commotions by starting a squabble with their favourite foreign competitor/opponent and for the Italians that has always been the French, especially since President Macron came to power on a platform which is diametrically opposed to the nonsensical program of the Italian government (lower taxes combined with higher spending when you already run a significant budget deficit and have a sky high public debt is not exactly the best cocktail to stimulate your economy with, as they are now learning the hard way).

Anyway, trade between Italy and France is good for more than €77BN per annum, with the economic North (the stronghold of Mr Salvini) very much relying on the links with France and the rest of the eurozone economy, so don't expect this to go beyond soms populist politician profiling and grandstanding...
Besides, Macron is smart not to waste a good opportunity here, so by playing it hard in public, the yellow vest manifestation gets suddenly seen in France as something political (which they have always tried to avoid), supported by a foreign rightwing government: not exactly very helpful to their cause in fact.

Let's hope the elections are over soon and people come back to their senses again.
