Most of these bands (and one singer) were around before and after the 80's. That makes the list pretty wide. Except for The Cult, all of yours are on my playlist too.
Just a few names of my playlist that weren't on your list:
AC/DC
Deep Purple
Genesis
Def Leppard
Iron Maiden
Judas Priest
Ozzy Osbourne
Queen
Rainbow
Whitesnake
310, 319, 320, 321, 321N, 332, 333, 343, 345, 346, 732, 735, 73G, 738, 744, 752, 762, 763, 77L, 77W, 788, AT4, AT7, BEH, CR2, CRA, CR9, DH1, DH3, DH4, E45, E75, E90, E95, F28, F50, F100, MD82, Saab 340, YAK40

Depends on what you consider an "80s Band".

I have plenty of bands on my playlist that were around during the 80s, but wouldn't really be considered "80s music", like ACDC, Aerosmith, Metallica, etc.

For 80s music, it's pretty thin, as it's not my favorite time period. White Lion's "Little Fighter" is one of the few. Also some '80s Ozzy.
I'm watching Jeopardy. The category is worst Madonna songs. "This one from 1987 is terrible".

I think I only have 80ies bands on my play list:
- Ultravox
- Killing Joke
- Genesis
- Aerosmith (Jeanny ot a gun)
- Whitesnake
- Cock Robin
- Saga
- Rush (we had a separate thread about them)
- Chicago
- Toto
- Journey
- The Cars
- Don Henley (Boys of summer)
- Foreigner
- Gary Moore (Empty Rooms)
- Glenn Frey
- Marillion
- Mike and the mechanics
- Mike Oldfield (Crime of passion)
- Mr Mister
- Peter Gabriel (Red Rain)
- Phil Collins
- The Rah Band (does anyone remember?)
- Spandau Ballet
- Steve Perry
- Stevie Wonder (I wish)
- The stranglers
- Styx
- Tears for fears
- Whitesnake :-) I am not alone
- Queen (after watching Bohemian Rhapsody I started to like them... )

My wife says I should stop living in the past.

BUT THIS KIND OF MUSIC IS SO F€&@&€ GREAT THAT I CANNOT STOP LIVING IN THE PAST!!!! 8-)

There must be a reason why even my daughters (born in 2000 and 2002) can start to sing a 80ies song whenever they get played on the radio...

Tears for Fears (definitely will have one song all the time).
Daryl Hall and John Oates
Duran Duran
Journey
Genesis

I was born in '89 but for some reason I've never cared for modern day music. There's something about late 70s to early 90s music that's just appealing. Maybe it's that back then you needed talent?

I've had Only You by Yazoo on my Amazon Music "Eighties Greaties" playlist, getting some serious play.

It's been a persistent ear worm after it was used on a tele ad here and I'm trying to get it out of my system.

Off the top of my head:
Michael Jackson
AC/DC
Aerosmith
Queen
Journey
Rush
Red Hot Chili Peppers (them and MJ will stand the test of time the most out of this list)
As a Millennial, I have to say that my generations music sucks.

I miss the days in the 80's when MTV played mostly music, up through 1985. If I had an 80's playlist, many of those MTV artists would be on the list.

So four British Acts.... what do we make of that?

Another two British acts (Peter Gabriel and Whitesnake) were also mentioned by four people, but you will always have a problem where some people mention a band just because they like two or three tracks, whilst others will listen to whole albums. When is a vote not a vote?

And that is before I muddy the waters by adding some strategic votes of my own.
AC/DC …..+1 now makes 4 in total
Duran Duran …. now hits 5
Genesis …… new outright winner with 6 :bouncy:
Peter Gabriel ….. a possible 5
Tears For Fears...… up to 4
The Police...… also up to 4
I could go on, but I've probably done enough damage already. :duck:

What is perhaps more interesting is notable absentees. :o
U2 scored only one vote (plus mine, makes two)
REM wasn't mentioned at all!
Weren't these two of the biggest acts in the 80's? :scratchchin:

Meanwhile, much as I love them both, Boston & Chicago were both more late 70's
As were Heart, Santana and Kraftwerk, none of whom got a mention until now.
Deep Purple - definitely 70's
Red Hot Chillis were 90's, as was Nirvana.

Whilst two people mentioned The Traveling Wilburys, how could we forget Tom Petty and his Heartbreakers?

And then of course there was David Bowie, successful decade after decade, but for some the 80's was one of his best. :tombstone:
Nothing to see here; move along please.

I don't have one of those play list things you speak of. My musical taste goes back some 300 years ago to the present. I don't have any time for low bandwidth/lossy examples of music you might hear on you tube or satellite services. If something is live, I might be interested, but the horrid lossy/compressed examples found on the current music services make me feel ill.

There can be no doubt that the UK brought out many of the best rock and pop bands. I always ask myself what the reason might be. The language? The tea? The weather? :scratchchin:

Hmmm, you are British, correct? By now, we all know that you have some issues with this question :duck: Just kidding.. :-) One song on the playlist is enough, that’s the way I understand the OP.

True, they became big after LiveAid. Their revenues increased significantly after that concert so that they even payed a part of the difference to the LiveAid organization...

I see REM more as a band of the 90‘s. It might have been at the end of the 80‘s but their sound was 90‘s , if you ask me.

It is nothing short of a minor miracle that the Brits have punched above their weight for something like four decades (1964 -1998).
I stopped the clock at 1998 because a quick summary of the following year in the UK charts comes up with Shania Twain (USA), Ricky Martin (P.R.), Eiffel65 (Italy) and Britney Spears ( ). The best the Brits could come up with for 1999 was Boyzone :talktothehand:
And that is probably why we all hark back to the 80's.... :rotfl:

You are correct, except......
Both U2 and REM had major success in other decades, so by comparison the 80's might have a quiet decade for them. However, when you are a mega group, even a "quiet" decade yields multiple hits (& albums), enough that they might dwarf the entire contribution of the smaller acts listed in various playlists.
e.g. for R.E.M. the 1980's included six albums incl Document, Green and Eponymous (!), singles incl Radio Free Europe, Don't Go back to Rockville, The One I Love, It's the End of the World as We Know it, Orange Crush and Stand. Not half bad, eh?

The record shows the 90's was an even bigger decade for R.E.M. but does that make it fair to exclude them from the 80's?
You say their sound was "90's", even when they registered #1 hits in 1988 and 1989.
I might equally argue that the hits they had in the 90's were inspired by the 80's. You say potatoe, I say tomato!

And that is before I even begin to struggle with the idea that "Peter Gabriel" is a band, whereas "Belinda Carlisle" is a different kind of artist.
At least Bob Seeger had his Silver Bullet Band, and Bruce Springsteen too (only one mention for The Boss - seriously?)

I'm asking the question; not suggesting I have the actual answer. Only the OP can define precisely what an "80's band" should be.

Meanwhile, it's great to see everyone's choices; the good, the bad, and the downright ugly.
Nothing to see here; move along please.

Child abuse is no laughing matter kiwirob. Why would you submit your child to such atrocity. You know what the best game is while seeing a Kiss show? Spotting when Paul lip syncs, not hard as it's about 80/20 lip syncing to actual singing.. But again, why would you submit your child to such shite music?

I'm sorry for your phone. And the "WTF" portion... 90% of the bands you listed are not from the 80's. They recorded and toured during then but were not from the 80's. I can make a chart and whatnot if you are still confused. Maybe have a phone conference?

Erasure have always been on my playlist. I went to the last concert of the "Wild!" tour at Milton Keynes Bowl and got blown away. That cemented me as a loyal fan.

That concert is on YouTube with Radio One simulcast audio.https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=e3lcKHu ... rt_radio=1 well worth a watch

Really nice stuff.

I really don't listen to any specific 80s bands, but more styles of music like :
Italo-Disco
(Latin) Freestyle
jurassic House (Joe Smooth, Larry Heard etc...).
leave your nines at home and bring your skills to the battle

Note: My "80s" playlist on Spotify holds 118 songs and plays for just short of 9 hours. The above list is thus rather far from being comprehensive.

PS
In my opinion nothing epitomises this era like Stock, Aitken & Waterman. There were 3 guys who could throw a catchy tune together and scout the talent to perform it.
Signature. You just read one.

Erasure-The innocents
REM - Accelerate (80s band but recent album)
Thompson Twins - Best of
The Hit Factory compilation (don't judge me!!!)

Most of my listening is in the car so those are the three I've got on play at the moment plus that PWL crime against music

SO many great bands in this thread! I think we'd all enjoy each other's playlists...maybe we can start a playlist share somewhere.

On my Apple Playlists, I am currently reliving Bananarama, after a thirty plus year gap - no particular reason! I am enjoying a greater range of their music this time around though, in addition to the few lasting favourites. ~ The Motels is another one that has been a ‘relive’ for me in 2018/19, although they are not technically an ‘80’s band.

Can't believe that in almost 40 posts nobody mentioned the Pet Shop Boys  Am I really the only one having them on his/her 80s playlist??
