Where have all the planes gone at JFK?

Fri Apr 12, 2019 12:14 am

I though this was really funny. I went in Google Maps to take a look at something and noticed something weird. There is exactly one airplane I can see at JFK. One lone JAL 777 at T1 and nothing else. Not at the Cargo ramps, not at any other terminal.

Maybe all flights have been moved to SWF....

Anyone know what date that may have been imaged? Looks like a beautiful sunny day. I assume it was an abandon ship for weather type scenario they caught. Must be different date for LGA and EWR, there are planes at those.

Google maps lists the month and year at the bottom of the image.
How come I can't upload an avatar photo to my profile?

Google maps can be misleading. Especially when it comes to airports. I use google maps often to verify where certain gates are so I can confirm how realistic my flight simulator airports are. And very often google maps show half an airplane at a gate or sometimes something that looks like a ghost of an airplane.

Google has a new algorithm that can remove the planes from the picture.

I hate that, its stupid. Why would companies want to remove something that shows their logo-for free to them-from anywhere? It's like them not allowing other companies to showcase their logo on their products. I know they want to protect their brand from being attacked, but if only a thing like Google Maps then why would you want your company's image removed??

Notice no cars on the highways or roads either.

Use Google Earth. It also has a time slider so you can see the changes to areas over time. PVG is quite fascinating to look at 2002 through today.

I believe that it's not at the airlines request.

Google is trying to create a consistent map with only static items.

It's the same system that takes clouds away.

Check out this disgusting mess across the street at LaGuardia.

And this one at Newark:

I like the ghostly ERJs and Q300/ERJ hybrid.

Is there a way to remove the "3D"? I thought it's supposed to be satellite imagery, not this stuff. You can do it in Google Earth but not in Maps apparently because I don't see any option to.

If that were the case, the airplane taking the aerial pictures wouldn't be there either.

I think it's mostly satellite.

Nope, the close-up data and 3D view (which show the same lack of airplanes) come from airplanes.

I suppose I can use it for model airports now

There are definitely planes there – the image was taken when Wonder Woman had her own short-lived LCC. Ran into tons of safety issues as I remember...

Because the default view became 3D, which is a highly processed product from several different images and angles
If you want to see the airplanes, disable the option "Globe" (in your language). Sometimes it's the way to see a more recent image

This is not 3D. If you want 3D you can click the button and they will become 3D model.

Wow. Never would have thought of that. I guess JAL must've paid the bribe to not get removed from the "Globe" view.

Thank you for this information - ever since the "3D" versus "2D" option went away, I thought the satellite view was all there was. Glad to know more recent imagery is available; however, even on the satellite images that are NOT from this year, it still says, "copyright 2019". Utter nonsense. The Cross Border Xpress from San Diego into TIJ airport has been open for several years, but on satellite view, there's no sign of dirt even being turned for the project.

And New Orleans' new terminal - now nearly finished - is also nothing but an empty field.

I wonder if they have any intentions of ever updating their imagery?

I think you’re onto the real reason. Google didn’t want to provide “free advertising “ for everyone. Why else would they expend time and resources to remove all those items from their imagery?
Is just me, or is flying not as much fun anymore?

And then if you go into 3D view, it looks like the tail of the plane is burned.

To remove the terrain effect, you can use the top left corner menu button and disable the "Earth" option.
