Finally Got My New Car

Thu Jun 27, 2019 5:22 am

Break out the empty cargo bays because after a couple threads of "what car should I get?", I finally got one! A blue 2017 Subaru Outback 3.6R!

It was sad to let go of my 2003 Honda Accord as she was my first car and I made a ton of memories in it, but it's time to move on and make new memories!

What cars do y'all have/want/had/about to buy? Feel free to get nostalgic and have your head in the clouds!

I used to have a Mk7 Volkswagen Golf, I sold it last year as I moved abroad. It was a really good car! For my next car I’m looking at Mercedes-Benz.

How’s the Subaru? I’ve heard good things about the Outback.

Ive only had it for about 6 hours but i really like it! Its got. Harmon/Kardon sound system and even blue lights in the hand hold of the door. Im astounded by all the details they put in it. Its not as quick off the line as my Honda was but I got it for the blend of power, affordability, size, reliability, and I want to do light offroading in it so im really excited to start doing things in it!

I've got a 2009 Ford Flex, ~190,000 miles
The wife drives a 2011 Ford Edge, ~135,000 miles
Just bought my daughter a 2008 Ford Escape, ~78,000 miles

I drive my cars until the wheels fall off.

That said, I suspect the Flex gets replaced in 2 years, and the wife will pass the Edge on to my son in 3 years. So, 2 new cars in the next 3 years...or at least one certified used.

I have a 2013 Kia Rio, but as I mentioned in another thread, this was the car I needed rather than the one I wanted. When I moved to the states in 2014 I was supposed to bring my car with me (a Suzuki), but my dad at the last minute decided to send it to the workshop to fix some dings (he was under the impression that my insurance rates would be high if it had scrapes and dings). He "guaranteed" the car would be done within two weeks...two months had passed and still no status update with me putting down $1300/month for rental, so I bought the Rio, which the dealership was only too happy to get rid of since it was a 2013 model taking space in the lot. My mom was pissed off because she took out a loan on her pension to pay it off (she apparently wanted me to keep paying for the rental until the car was ready, which would have been up to mid April + 3 weeks for shipping).

It's currently around 68,500 miles and while I would like to get rid of it and move to the car I want, that's probably gonna have to wait for a couple of years.

Tell us more about how the Outback is. If I go with Subaru, that's gonna be the model I'll pick.

Currently on my 3rd Mazda:
2018 Mazda CX-9 (purchased slightly used) - my first automatic transmission in a long time.

Previously:
2015 Mazda 6 with 6-speed manual
2010 Mazda 3 2.5L with 6-speed manual
2002 Civic EX with 5-speed manual (purchased from my dad)

Each car has been an improvement. Quite happy with the CX-9. Fold down one or both of the 3rd-row seats and there is plenty of cargo room. And it drives and handles like a smaller car.

It's due for service, and I see they're now offering to install Apple CarPlay. Anyone have any experience (good or bad) with that?

I noticed the H/K sound system in the Outback, I bet that sounds pretty good! Audi is offering B&O sound systems in their current A4, I’m tempted to give it a try!

Currently driving a 15 Jetta 2.0 NA with a 5 speed stick. Looking to replace it late this year. Leaning toward a new Golf GTI Rabbit, Honda Civic SI or maybe a Jetta GLI (stick of course) sadly neither the GTI or the GLI come in the nice blue I love and have on my current car. I will say its annoying to me how hard it is to shop for manuals and how much pointless electronic waste is put in these new cars.

Have: 1998 Ford Escort ZX2 & 2006 Ford Focus wagon

Want: (Full-size) 1966 Chrysler New Yorker, 1965 or '66 Mercury Park Lane. (Mid-size) 1972 Plymouth Satellite Sebring Plus, 1974 Pontiac Grand Am.

Had: Too many to list, but favorite was a '72 Dodge Coronet, least favorite was a '77 Toyota Corona wagon (truly dangerous wet weather handling)

Congrats!

I own a 2005 Maxima I bought brand new and now has 280k. A 2000 Expedition I bought used that I leave in Nevada with 160k. I am probably going to buy a brand New F150 or Expedition this fall.

My last car was a 08 Civic LX with a 5 speed. I liked that car more than my Jetta but my Jetta is the base model 2.slow.

I drive a Renault, which replaced my Kia, which replaced my Proton (local car company), which replaced my junk of a Honda.

Yes, you heard that right, junk of a Honda. The most UNRELIABLE car I've ever owned! That POS basically turned me off Japanese cars forever!

WTF. I've had a 2012 Corolla for seven years and it's never given me 30 seconds of trouble.

(Never heard of any owner getting any trouble from any (non-Mitsubishi) Japanese cars either.)

Lucky you. Over here however, it seems like we're the dumping ground for shit Japanese cars. I'm not the only one who has had reliability issues with them.

Just to give you a clue as to how unreliable it is (it was a 2004 Honda City, a sedan version of the 1st gen Honda Fit):

a) Changed my gearbox because of known problems with the CVT unit. When I sold my car, the replacement gearbox was showing early signs that it's heading for the same problem.
b) Changed wheel bearings 5 different times
c) Change engine mounts 3 times
d) It eats tyres like nobody's business. I can't get a single piece to last more than 20,000 kilometres (around 12,000 miles) even with proper alignment, balancing & rotation!

Mind you, those problems didn't happen at the end of my 7 year ownership - it happened a lot early on! The only reason I kept the damn thing is because I can't afford another car, either new or second hand.

The only Japanese car I would consider is Mazda. Not even Nissan, which shares a lot of the same components as Renault.

Run away from VW, run as far as you can. Been a loyal VW customer for the last 25 years, after the crap I've had to deal with the 2 MK7 Golf's I've had over the last two years, I won't be touching another VW again.

As for the Outback, I like them but the fact that they're only available with a CVT is a deal breaker.

Thank Subaru for the current proliferation of CVTs: They were the first to install a "modern" CVT on the Justy subcompact way back in the mid-1980s.

My friend here bought a 2018 Honda Accord and he said it was the most unreliable car he had ever owned! I’m not writing off Honda here, that particular car may have been a lemon.

Also I remember seeing Proton’s back home in the UK!

My current collection is, well let's say I have an issue, I collect cars like some collect sneakers, right now though my fav is the Jag XF I bought the wife for her birthday present.

As to the heads in the clouds...I am heading to Europe next month on a business/car buying trip, I am going to be shopping for a Ford Capri 2.8i, preferably blue over grey.

Yeah, they did export cars to the UK back in the 1980s to the late 2000s. Even owned Lotus too. But now Proton has a new shareholder in Geely.

Yeah....I know. But other considerations came into play.

Mazda's automatic transmission isn't too bad. I only get pissed off at it maybe once or twice per drive.

I currently own a 2015 Mazda 6 with a 6 speed manual. I really like it. It's fuel efficient, comfortable, reasonably fun to drive, and it looks really sharp. The manual gearbox is really tight and precise. It's a joy to operate. Performance wise, it's not a quick car but I'll take fuel efficiency over power. What made you get rid of your Mazda6 for a CX-9?

I was never quite happy with the performance, as you noted (my own fault, really - the 2015 was one of the few years between the V6 and the turbo-4). Also, I didn't find the seat particularly comfortable after awhile - it was hurting my back. And my commute is anywhere from 45 to 75 minutes in a fair amount of traffic; while it never overtly bothered me as such, it is notably easier not having to deal with the clutch and shifting gears all the time.

But primarily, we were about to have a baby, and therefore I wanted more cargo room (stroller, etc.) and didn't want to deal with driving a stick shift while dealing with a baby.

I miss it; once you drive stick, switching back to auto really sucks. But it's the sensible thing right now.

I currently daily drive a 2015 Mazda 6. I really like it. It's efficient, comfortable, and the 6-speed manual is precise and a joy to operate. It's a pretty anemic car in terms of performance but it can easily get out of its own way and it gets up to 39 mpg highway. It's a great looking vehicle too.

I also have a beater 1997 Volvo 850 with 249,000 miles on it. Paid $900 for it. Everything works on it and it's never missed a beat. It's the non-turbo engine and it's pretty slow but the 5-speed manual transmission wakes it up a bit. In terms of reliability and longevity, Volvos made before 1998 are hard to beat. I love this car. It feels like driving your favorite old sofa becasue it has the comfy seats Volvo is famous for.

My mom loved her rotary Mazda. Its motor had problematic seals you might remember, and it had 'sudden total heart failure' twice, the second time on the Tacoma Narrow bridge. Some guy bought it and had the engine re-built, and Mazda finally got it right - it lasted several more years with no more seal failures.

This is my current ride (since 2014): Citroen C5 berline, 2.2 HDI Exclusive (not my actual car in the picture)

Image
Diesel engine, 204 HP, 440 NM @ 1900 rpm

Capable of > 40 mpg at highway speeds and > 26 mpg at Autobahn speeds.

Comfortable ride, quiet interior, large trunk. Best car I ever owned, rather reliable too. Too bad that they do not produce them anymore. Would not hesitate to buy a successor.

I owned an RX-7 great engine but had it's issues. Very prone to Flooding. Mazda had a switch that would cut off the fuel while you cranked it to get the fuel out of the engine to it would start.

I am riding around in a brand new 2019 CX-5 GT, and the infotainment system is clearly an afterthough on that car. The Apple Car Play is fine, it works like all the other ACP's out there but the sluggish-ness of the whole infotainment system is sad. At least the car more than makes up for it in driveability and comfort!
