You do know that we fought a war over our independence, don't you?

The 4th of July is the day in which the Declaration of Independence saw its first signatures, a peaceful act of defiance, not violence or war. Celebrating the day with a display of our military might is an insult to the meaning of the day. This is a massive ego trip by Pres. Trump, a way to push for loyalty to him, not so much our country, by a President who is far from being a real patriot, just some money grubbing jerk. I can't wait for the day he is out of office by losing in 2020, Impeached and removed or dies a natural death and we can return to sanity.

I'm sure Congress (in particular, the GOP-led Senate) will approve funds to repair the streets in DC if they're damaged by tanks. Or is this one of those "you're on your own" scenarios?

The city government has made this case both this year and last year when Trump wanted to do this. There will be damage on some level.
The question is which outcome is more likely after that damage - that Congress reimburses DC for repair costs, or that they don't and the Administration tries to eventually blame DC's torn-up streets on the city's leadership (which just so happens to be very liberal)? I think I know the answer to that one...

He’s most likely to be re-elected / impeached for what / you just lowered yourself below what you think of him by wishing death to someone / what kind of sanity would we return to ?

Is there something wrong with that? Is homelessness a problem worthy of federal interest, or not? Should the feds ignore it because it is a Republican administration?

Really? I only ever see them advocate for illegal aliens while at the same time we can't properly deal with the droves of homeless people who live predominantly in Democratic cities. Been to Maxine Waters' district lately? It's the pinnacle of shame.

Democrats were in control for how many years and did what to “solve” the homeless issue?

"Trump’s efforts to control the rally should be seen in the context of his fear that the crowd will boo him. He is advertising the event on his Twitter feed, cordoning off the immediate area around his speech for ticket holders, and giving tickets away to Republican donors. Trump has “requested that the chiefs for the Army, Navy, Air Force and Marines stand next to him.”
Get it? The service chiefs have to stand next to Trump as human patriotism bodyguards.
Trump has spent his presidency representing his supporters, without even bothering with the pretense of representing the majority that voted against him. He is attempting to conscript patriotic rituals into this effort. He deserves the reception he fears: loud, merciless boos."

What about the tanks? They'll be big and likely empty (probably 1-2 people inside and most likely no ammo).

You mean hydrogen? No other gas can make a float float and if it's not helium, it would have to be hydrogen, which is extremely volatile (and being lighter than helium, would require more handlers) or methane (which is also volatile). You need a gas that's lighter than nitrogen and oxygen. I mean, you COULD fill the balloon with regular air, but it just wouldn't float.

Depends on the city. Houston and Salt Lake City have made huge improvements. But let's be honest--you don't actually care about the homeless and you definitely don't care to learn about any solutions, especially because they'd require talking about healthcare and affordable housing, neither of which are solved by bibles, tax cuts, or guns. You just like using it as a distraction. When was the last time the right proposed anything remotely effective at reducing homelessness, poverty, and improving mental health?

In a totalitarian state, with no outstanding virtues except a crushing military, that might be true. In a country which, in throughout its history, has let its strength speak for itself, without ostentatious displays of military hardware, such chest-thumping has not only been unnecessary, but unwarranted.
Of course, under this president, all sense subtlety - and of history - is gone. Trump is not celebrating the Independence of our nation; he is preening and setting himself up to be the center of attention. It is galling because Independence Day is supposed to be a proud reminder of out democratic values - a democracy for the benefit of all of us. As Slate wrote:
seb146 wrote:I always thought Independence Day was about celebrating what makes America great and our history and who we are as a nation. Not about one person. It was not ONLY George Washington who defeated the British. It was not ONLY Abraham Lincoln who defeated the traitorous South. It was not ONLY Eisenhower who defeated Hitler. Those took thousands of men and women.

Not really sad though. I think its telling.
Btw previous Presidents spoke on July 4th all the time.
And DC Military parades have included nuclear missiles. See here...
