How/when did you ask for a pay raise?

Sat Jul 06, 2019 11:13 pm

Obviously, all bosses are relunctant to this.

How many times have you been trying before being successful?
How long did you wait between all requests?
Does a better position mean a better salary? :scratchchin:

What was the boss attitude afterwards? ( including after the pay rise)
And your preferred colleagues?

Thanks

That was one of the worst things working in Japan. Higher position = ‘service’ to the company, vastly more responsibility, offense taken to salary demands. Larger expense account, yes, but goalposts for bonus criteria moved several times through the year. Eat my middle finger, suckers.

I was not successful at my first attempt. On my second attempt, I was offered a very rewarding performance goal instead. I’ve not asked many times since, and been successful about half the time.

In my industry, pay is discussed during the annual performance review. Most employees are offered a raise as part of the review; some ask for more if the raise does not meet expectations. Employees who are not offered a raise two years in a row get the message and move on.

Yes and no. The responsibilities come months before the title, however when the title does come, it is with a raise always.

I’ve not noticed a change in attitude after getting a raise I asked for, nor does mine change (I hope…) when my staff asks for one.

My preferred colleague and I both want the same thing, and so far are getting what we want, or we leave…

I work for an organisation where each job is "banded" on a set scale based on duties and levels of responsibilities. Each year, provided you meet criteria regarding work plans and given targets (based on your annual appraisal) you move onto the next pay point. ONce you are at the top of your grade you only get inflaction raises (if any) or apply for a job on the next band up

My first notable pay raise was 50%.

But I had to change jobs and employers to get it.

I in 42 years of work, never had to ask for a raise. Union right out of High School until I retired. I had a few strikes though.

My pay raises are tied to performance, so it's usually done after performance appraisal. I don't recall any of my colleagues & friends asking for a raise outside of the promised performance increment.

I did however had increments withheld because of "performance issues", which pisses me off because I met all the KPIs set, but they tripped me on a peer review, simply because I did not make myself more visible. Didn't stay for another year of that.

I try to ask once a year, since they're not automatic.

If you're not at least getting a cost of living/inflation increase each year, you're effectively making less money.

On one occasion I asked for a salary increase because I felt I was now performing additional duties above the existing pay grade at that time. (And looking back I absolutely was.) I also had an opportunity on the table to vastly improve my pay by leaving said company and consulting on my own. So I gave them my demands. They rightfully refused. You can't negotiate on those terms because there was no way they were going to keep me happy. I left the company and started consulting on my own for 5 years. Don't regret it for one moment and glad they didn't accept my ultimatum.
