But over here our landmarks are mainly older and not quite as tall as NYC, the surrounding buildings aren't quite as tall either, so we can get away with the wheel. Although we do have The Shard, which I've not visited but I've heard that's a great view.
Sidenote: the Emirates Air Line cable car in the East End gives great views of the Thames, the o2 and traffic from LCY, I'd recommend it.

Not only are the views fantastic (on a CLEAR day you can see forever) but the design, engineering efforts, cleanliness and obviously solid maintenance all come together to provide a very enjoyable "ride".
One thing that struck me about they Eye is that it is the result of a government that made the decision to invest in something special. We don't' see that much in the US - our politicians are too afraid to achieve anything special these days. Half a century since an American walked on the moon and what else has been done. There was a story on TV the other night about CHina's investment in high speed rail. China started 10 years ago and today has more high speed rail the the rest of the countries together. We can't get any thing started, are years behind in infrastructure and have a decrepit air traffic control. Third world countries embarrass us with their airports and roads. The London Eye is a great example of an achievement of government, All we have if a Government run by Trump - when he's not watching FOX or flying in the $250,000 an hour to one of his golf courses.
