Trump backs down from citizenship question - as he claims he is not backing down from citizenship question

Fri Jul 12, 2019 3:49 am

Donald Trump has thrown in the towel on his attempts to get a "citizenship question" attached to the 2020 census, even as he claimed. "We are not backing down on our effort to determine the citizenship status of the United States population.”

Despite the defiant look on his face at the hastily-called press statement, Trump - accompanied by Attorney General Bill Barr - essentially acknowledged that the Supreme Court's ruling — and the time crunch to complete the census — meant there was no route to getting the question on the survey, which hasn't featured a citizenship query since 1950. The Commerce Department also has already begun to print the questionnaires without the citizenship section. He now says he will issue an executive order requiring all federal agencies to share government records to assemble estimate of number of citizens and non-citizens living in US,, and that such sharing will provide a complete picture of the situation (which, if true, begs the question "why did we need the fight over a citizenship question anyway?).

"The option that the president touted during his Rose Garden remarks — using official records to determine how many noncitizens live in the United States — is precisely what Census Bureau officials proposed more than a year ago when Secretary of Commerce Wilbur Ross, whose department oversees the bureau, suggested adding a question about citizenship to the population count.

Using records from the Social Security Administration, the IRS and other federal agencies, government statisticians can already estimate about 90% of the noncitizen population, rivaling the accuracy that the census would provide, the bureau’s chief scientist told Ross in a memo that became part of the court record.

That approach would be cost-effective and would provide the information the government might need without causing some people to refuse to answer the census, the memo said. Ross rejected that approach."

Pres. Trump's attempt to put in the citizenship question in the Census was to appease his supporters, cut government spending and discourage not legally residing persons from staying in the country. It would have been devastating in the area where I live, Northern NJ, as to local and school budgets with not only Mexicans living here without authorization but also from Central America, South America, Spanish Caribbean, Poland, Russian and other Eastern Europeans, the Islamic world, Israel, India and China. Until we get fair Immigration reform in the USA, something ignored for over 35 years, battles like Trump's will continue.

Not gonna happen. The Chamber of Commerce will continue exerting influence on both parties to maintain the two-tier legal/illegal immigration cheap labor pool because it works exactly how numerous industries like it to.
