Hernia repair surgery

Thu Aug 22, 2019 8:38 am

I have to resolve an inguinal hernia
and looks like it needs surgery

Interested in thoughts/ suggestions and
if anyone knows a good surgeon in
the Tampa / Clearwater area that specializes in this ?

I don’t know if a surgeon in your area but thoughts on it is that it isn’t a bad surgery. I had mine repaired when I got my gallbladder removed (it was in a location they can go in through). It’s not a bad surgery though. I’d recommend sleeping on a recliner or inclined surface because getting up out of bed does hurt...was the only bad part about it.

Hernia surgery is like having a wisdom tooth pulled these days it’s so routine. You don’t need a specialist or a recommendation. Just get it done. If they have to cut through any muscle to get to it, it’s going to hurt like hell after so be prepared.

I just had inguinal hernia surgery 4 months ago. Look for a hospital that uses the da Vinci robotic system. Much less invasive than traditional surgery.
You will end up with 3 small incisions across your abdomen that fade away in a few months.

My surgeon said that with robotic surgery, in addition to repairing the hernia in question, he's able to find and repair any undetected hernias you might have but not know it. With traditional surgery you will be back in the hospital for another surgery should those undetected hernias worsen and become bothersome.

I had double inguinal done 3 years ago by Dr. Danielle Chambers in Orlando. I knew 3 people that had it done before me, all had different lengths of recovery and one guy had serious complications that led him back in the hospital for a week. Other than an allergic reaction to the iodine, I only had a small bruise the size of my thumb below my belly button, she did a great job. I'll keep it real with you, the first week was hell.

I had exactly the same operation a year ago. It was a day procedure but I had to stay in for 24 hours as when I came round I was sweating like hell and really bad nausea and dizziness. Totally agree about the recliner as it hurt to get up and down for around 4-5 days after.

You cant lift anything heavier then a bag of sugar for around 2-3 weeks after and you need lots of sleep. If you are overweight loose some as it really does make a difference in recovery. Everyone is different but it took around 3-4 months to feel 100% again.

If you are overweight at all they will recommend against it until you loose weight... unless you start having complications.

Otherwise yes it is simple, day surgery usually, I had a bit of pain after for a few days but had not trouble getting around or in/out of bed, though it depends on the exact location I'm, sure. Coughing at all would not be recommended however... :ill:
