Windsor Castle Fire Public Attention Back in 1992

Sun Aug 25, 2019 4:12 pm

What was public attention and media coverage for the fire at Windsor Castle back in 1992 like. Were donations sent for restoring Windsor Castle after the fire there. Also, how did that compare to the fire at Notre Dame Cathedral in Paris a few months ago.

The Queen paid taxes and they opened Buckingham Palace for tours to fund it.

I think the public chiefly thought, "Isn't the damned thing made of stone?"

Media coverage in NZ was massive. I distinctly remember it.

You can't compare the two events, Notre Dame happened in the world we live in today with instant social media updates. I'm sure if Windsor happened today it would garner the same coverage as Notre Dame.

How extensive was the damage at Windsor Castle after it caught fire compared to Notre Dame Cathedral.

The Notre Dame fire is an order of magnitude higher than Windsor Castle, whilst the Notre Dame fire affected more or less the entire building and closed it completely, the Windsor fire affected one side of the upper quadrangle, admittedly this involved St Georges Hall, one of the most important buildings on the site around 90% of the castle was completely unaffected and continued to be used.
