Cool (though surprisingly small in person) statue in a prominent location with a cute story behind it.

Slow news day?

Brick wrote:

It's not a political site either, yet people feel the need to post threads discussing, at great length, all the possible implications of every little sneeze, burp, and fart that comes out of the US White House. If a thread doesn't interest you, don't post in it and it'll sink down to page two soon enough.

You are of course correct, got myself mixed up after going down a Wikipedia wormhole of skyscrapers. Very interesting stuff.

However I think it still stands to reason that the Burj al Arab wasn't a case of someone plopping down a luxury hotel on an artificial island off the coast of some unknown city.

Regardless, I hardly think a 12 story mixed apartment/commercial building in Gwadar is comparable to a 56 story, $1 billion luxury hotel on its own island.

It was actually the Burj Khalifa that was completed in 2010.

In the past, they were closed after the New Year's holiday season ended in early January until either the last weekend of February or the first weekend of March.

The park may be "open" but not all rides will be running, like they are in the summer, I'd assume.

Does the 86th floor observation deck of the Empire State Building in New York City (which sees 3.5 million to 4.5 million paying visitors a year), even have the capacity to handle 6 million to 7 million visitors a year, which is the same number that visit the first two viewing levels of the Eiffel Tower in Paris and Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York City. I have personally been wondering that for some time now.

Museum of Modern Art Reopening

Mon Oct 21, 2019 4:37 am

The Museum of Modern Art in New York City has reopened after a $450 million renovation that includes expanded gallery space and a new entrance hall. The Museum looks impressive based on pictures seen and I find it amazing. I also feel that the renovations could lead to increased visitor numbers to MoMa. What are your thoughts about the newly renovated museum.

The Edge at Hudson Yards Observation Deck Opening Date

Fri Oct 25, 2019 1:55 am

The Edge at Hudson Yards will be opening in March 2020 and looks to be an exciting attraction. It will be in the 100th-101st floors of 30 Hudson Yards and will be the highest outdoor observation deck in New York City. The cool observation deck will have a glass floor, slanted glass walls, a champange bar on the 100th floor, and a staircase connecting the 100th-101st floors. Admission prices will be $36 for adults except for New Yorkers, who will have a fee of $34. It will be New York City's fifth observation deck after the Empire State Building, Statue of Liberty, One World Observatory near the top of the Freedom Tower, and Top of the Rock on the roof of 30 Rock and provide serious competition to those observation decks. Still, I feel that 30 Hudson Yards will be a successful attraction. What are your thoughts about this observation deck.

This is the first real glass floor in New York City, even though One World Observatory has a glass portal linked with cameras from high up facing the street, giving the illusion of a glass floor. The slanting of the outdoor observation deck at 30 Hudson Yards will make the experience more vertigo inducing and thrilling.

I certainly would do it for the experience and there is an indoor section that will include a bar and restaurant on the 100th floor if you do not want to do the outdoor cantilever.

I was being sarcastic. In fact, it's not hard to imagine a (stereo)typical New Yorker's equally sarcastic reaction in person: "Ooh, two dollas off! Lookit dis Doris, we got two whole dollas off cos we're locals! Are you sure you can afford that? I mean, I don' wanna put you in the poor house or nuttin'!"

Guitar Hotel at Hard Rock Resort in Hollywood, Florida

Sat Oct 26, 2019 3:39 am

The Guitar Hotel at the Seminole Hard Rock Resort and Casino in Hollywood, Florida has opened today and is 450 feet tall and includes memorabilia from the 1950's and 1960's, including Elvis Presley's motorcycle. I see the Guitar Tower as the next great architectural landmark and tourist attraction in America and possibly the world and I would not be suprised if movies are set and filmed there. It could be mentioned in a song as it does represent Hard Rock music. The Guitar Hotel is poised to represent Hollywood, Florida the same way the Gateway Arch does for St.Louis, the Space Needle does for Seattle, and the Lincoln Memorial does for Washington, DC.

I'd never stay there out of snobbery. After all, that's not a Gibson Les Paul. By the dimensions, it more resembles an acoustic guitar anyway.

I seriously doubt that. If one can't afford $36 per ticket, getting two dollars off per won't make much difference.

It's cute, no doubt about it, but it's hardly an "architectural landmark" because overly-themed hotels/motels where the theme extends to the architecture of the buildings themselves are far from being anything new, the old "Wigwam" motels being an early example of this-

Image

As for the building being a tourist attraction in and of itself? Nope, it's just a very large sign that advertises the attached casino which will be the real tourist attraction there.

Observation Wheel at Union Station St.Louis

Mon Oct 28, 2019 4:14 am

An observation wheel at Union Station in St.Louis, Missouri has been open since September 30, 2019 and is the latest tourist attraction in St.Louis. It has 47 gondolas including a VIP gondola and is 200 feet tall. The wheel pays homage to the Ferris Wheel for the 1904 St.Louis World's Fair. It will provide an additional observation point for St.Louis alongside the Gateway Arch and become a great tourist attraction for the city. Also, an aquarium inside Union Station will open in September.

Guggenheim Museum 60 Year Anniversary

Last week, the Guggenheim Museum in New York City celebrated it's 60 year anniversary. It is the last major building designed by Frank Lloyd Wright and one of the great architectural landmarks of the world, known for it's circular design and spiraling ramp inside.

Shibuya Square Observation Deck Opens

Thu Nov 07, 2019 12:04 am

The observation deck at Shibuya Square has opened to the public a few days ago and is located on the 47th floor of the tallest building in Shibuya. It includes indoor experiences on the 14th, 45th, and 46th floors, while the rooftop terrace is located on the 47th floor. The opening drew crowds to the observation deck and has proven to be a popular part of the Shibuya Station redevelopment. This observation deck joins a large number already in Tokyo including the Tokyo Tower, Tokyo Skytree, Roppongi Hills Mori Tower, City Hall, and the Sunshine 60.

One of the better observatories in Tokyo is at the Bunkyo Civic Center - it’s not that high but has few obstructions and a view of all of Tokyo’s subcenter skylines in one panorama.

Unlikely unless it is an exceptionally clear day. There are probably fewer than 10 days in the year Fuji is visible from central Tokyo - the best time is the day or two after a typhoon.

Proposed Shipwreck Tower in Prague

Thu Nov 07, 2019 10:35 pm

An observation tower has been proposed for Prague that would combine the shape of a regular tower with a sculptural shipwreck. The tower would be 450 feet tall and include an observation deck and a garden for the public to access. It would become the city's newest landmark and and to a long line of public observation decks that already include Old Town Hall, the towers of Charles Bridge, Petrin Tower, the tower of St.Vitus Cathedral, and the Powder Tower.

Odunpazari Art Museum in Turkey

Sun Nov 10, 2019 3:27 am

A couple months ago, the Odunpazari Art Museum in Eskisehir, Turkey has opened to the public and the design was inspired by the traditional Ottoman wooden house. The building was designed by the same firm that designed the V&A Museum Dundee in Dundee, Scotland and has art covering the 1950's to the present. The museum also includes a sky lit atrium and a variety of exhibition spaces. I feel that the museum has the potential to become the next Guggenheim Bilbao as a major cultural landmark for Eskisehir and could help Anerivan and British tourism in Turkey recover after a few years of geopolitical instability.
