Polish Parliamentary Elections - Far Right Keeps Majority

Mon Oct 14, 2019 8:40 am

In 2015, PiS (The Law and Justice Party) came to power on the back of the immigration crisis. It played on people's fears (racism) and handouts (500pln/child) during the campaign to unexpectedly win the election and the majority in Parliament. In the past 4 years, there have been countless anti-government protests to address what many in the country are unhappy about. The government is extremely pro church and the church is seen to make much of the policy, anti-immigrant, anti-homosexual, anti-abortion. There have also been many other absurdities such as the environment minister passing a law allowing property owners to cut down as many trees as they like, the clear-cutting (logging) of large swaths of the Białowieża forest (the oldest virgin forests in Europe.) and on and on.

Much like the situation in the USA, the opposition (the Civic Coalition formed with PO the strongest opposition party at its core) is just plain weak, and instead of coming up with a proper plan, picking a good candidate as a leader, they just chose to criticize PiS spouting things that everyone already knew and giving more votes over to the smaller parties and coalitions.

It looks like the center and the left is losing ground to the far-right, not only in Poland but everywhere in the west.

I think we Liberals need to start asking ourselves what we're doing wrong. It's not the conservatives fault we're getting beaten in elections.

At least there is a fairly good chance Kaczynski will run his plane into the ground some day.

Opposing immigration is not racism.

Indeed it is not. Claiming that everyone coming from other places will threaten your way of life IS, however, which is what a couple of Eastern European nations have done.

In the US, controlling the border is not racism. Saying that Mexicans are rapists, bringing drugs, and crime is. And knowing that people immediately use faulty association means that if one matches the description, then they all match. Because if men die, and grass dies, then therefore men are grass.

I Think Polish Liberals should adopt Immigration Policy similar to Sebastian Kurz and Mette Frederiksen ones, Also Hillary Clinton even tells European Leaders to curb Immigration in order to prevent Far-Right Racist islamophobes coming to Power.

For Poland, the problem is that Islamophobia and Anti-Semitism is Extremley Universal in Poland, far worse than in US and UK.

The funny part of this is that Polish people gets suprised when like in UK they are not welcome anymore.

Second after brexit and next budget Poland in order to continue getting the similar funding like today need to get allied with net contributers like germany, scandinavia and holland.

With EU contributers demanding 1% of national incomes to EU budgets, balkan countries entering Poland might face a slower economicsl development and the government will need to explain this for its people.

If we are becoming nit-picky about words: "Technically"... Mexican is not a race. So it can't be racism if you discriminate against Mexicans. It is however discrimination based on origin. I understand that it is easy to slap a label like "Racism!" on absolutely everything that is discriminatory, but it is not the correct thing to do.

And interestingly Poland is have a difficult time keeping employable citizens within its borders!
Poland has struggled to recover from an exodus of as many as 2 million workers who decamped to the U.K. and Ireland. Officials expect the current population of 38 million to shrink by more than 7% in the next quarter-century. By the end of that period, every second Pole will be over 50.

The influx from war-torn Ukraine has been a blessing: Ukrainians accounted for almost 5% of the workforce last year and contributed as much as 0.9 percentage point to growth, according to central bank estimates.

Except, they're not.

Danish elections: Social-democrats won the election and ousted a liberal/conservative coalition with had its parliamentary majority secured by the anti-immigration, far-right. Danish People's Party (DPP). The DPP suffered the loss of 1/3 of its parliament seat, and member of previous coalition, the Liberal party, lost 4/5ths of their seats.
Swedish elections: Conservative government replaced by Social-Democratic ditto. Anti-immigration party Swedish Democrats kept from all influence despite winning almost 20% of the votes.
Portugal: Solid socialist / social-democratic majority
Spain: Conservatives lost, Social-democrats won

So, no, Europe is not moving to the far-right in general terms, it's mainly a Eastern European thing.
