Do you find Greta Thunberg annoying?

Sat Oct 26, 2019 2:24 am

I know it's a rather leading question but I should admire a 16 year old that has the confidence and communication skills to face the world's press and talk to governments about her beliefs. But she drives me insane when I hear her speak and especially when she uses her lecturing tone. Apparently she had Asbergers which again should solicit sympathy but even allowing for that she still makes me grit my teeth.
Your thoughts regarding her?

She's a child. I don't find her particularly annoying, but then again I don't pay much attention to her. What I do find annoying is the suggestion that she is off limits for criticism simply because she is a child, but the same people who suggest this were the first ones to try and ruin Nick Sandmann's life for simply having the audacity to wear a red hat. Can't have it both ways.

Not anymore so than any other 16 year old.

Kind of like how noone talks about all those caged up children on the border.

I haven't listened to her speak much, though I give her credit. If you are annoyed by a 16 year old, and you are an adult, you should probably focus on the really annoying adults. Far more annoying adults.

Agreed, I find adults who willfully reject science and reason highly irritating, as these are literally the two foundational elements of all we have achieved as a species.

When I first heard she was 16, I was shocked. I thought she was much younger. I heard it was intentional, similar to how Christine Balsey Ford, where videos on YouTube of her speaking were removed because she actually talks like an adult instead of a little girl like she did for the entire Brett Kavanaugh confirmation hearings. If you speak out against what a terrified little girl says you will be branded a hateful person, so you better keep your mouth shut if you disagree with them.

I applaud that she found a cause she believes in and is working to raise awareness. I am annoyed at 16 year old telling me that she has had a ruined childhood because I choose to drive instead of taking public transport.

I think the issue is both the messenger as much as the message itself. World leaders stole her childhood? I believe Syrian/Iraqi/Yemeni/Kurdish children have a much larger case to make about a ruined childhood than a girl that lives in a country with one of the highest standards of living. And while climate change is a subject that world leaders must eventually tackle, there are more pressing issues to deal with in many areas.

I think she should hook up with David Hogg and go ahead and spawn the Anti-Christ.

Even though I would probably tend to agree with her on alot of things, I can't stand her. I just find her personality and speaking style to be incredibly grating and insulting. She does no favors for the environmental movement outside of the left leaning bubble.

Not sure that is correct as one often overlooked aspect of climate change is that the effects would essentially double over night if we stopped emitting any CO2 at all right now and it already is quite a good killer as it it....
It will literally get a lot worse before it gets better, regardless of what we do

Generally people don't get annoyed unless someone hits a spot...

I find annoying that she sees the, real, problem from a fairly strict rich first world perspective. But then again, she is just 16, and probably beats any climate change denier in most IQ tests still... maybe that is why many are annoyed by her.

She’s a child who should be in school, the only person taking her future away from her is her.

There are hundreds of millions of children all over the world living in abject poverty and we are supposed to take this child from a wealthy and privileged family seriously????

She's a pawn of the envirocultists. Hell, she's their matron saint at this point.

Her parents are also linked to Antifa.

I'm sure she'll grow up to be a lovely young lady. Not an angry leftist shrew at all.

I find her profoundly patronising. "You stole my childhood!" Sod off. But she's 16, and I remember what an idiot I was at 16, so I'm willing to tune her out and not think much about it.

What I am very annoyed by is the people that enable her and others like the extinction rebellion idiots. I don't believe that these people are serious about the environment. It seems entirely political - they can barely contain their anti-capitalist sentimetns.

If they were truly serious about the 1.5ºC problem, they'd be protesting China and India. They'd be fully on board with Nuclear as a short- to medium term solution to get rid of fossil fuels while we try to figure out how to make renewables work. But they don't. They claim the UK has done nothing to address climate change - a claim so preposterous it's hard to take anything they say serious.

I've posted this in another thread so I won't go into the details here, but in short, with one or two exceptions, the carbon emissions for developed economiies have all decreased - in most cases substantially - over the last 20 years. Europe and the US both dropped around 16% at the same time as China's output increased 73% and India doubled.

Pissing and moaning at the developed economiies is like hearing that the dam is about to burst and standing 4 miles downstream with a mop.

I do not believe that is the case. And I do think most medical professionals will disagree.

I do agree, however, that it is very likely over-diagnosed. I would liken it the ADHD of the 2010s.

I would also never allow that to excuse poor social hygiene.

As for Greta Thunberg, I think if a grown man has a problem with her message, that is far more trait-indicative of the reciever.

She has edges that need polishing. But we have also a planet that needs environmental maintenance. So there is that. . .

Whether or not you find her annoying is irrelevant. It's her message we should be paying attention to. Your generation have left a terrible mess for the younger ones to clean up. The very least you can do is put up with her voice, given what you've done (by you, I mean your generation, not you specifically).

A shame that a 16-year/old needs to devote her time to this. It is a colossal failure of the world community (=adults) not addressing the most urgent problem we - as humankind - is facing.

Addressing the climate issue is the most selfish thing we can do as humankind, the earth will survive fine without humans, you can argue, even better without humans, the other way around not so much.

Bullshit. Your source doesn't even support your claim. Try reading it before you spread such lies. The last attempt to brand antifa as domestic terrorist group, via non-binding resolution, failed.just a few month ago and consequently they don't show up on any applicable list anywhere.

There is no organisation "antifa" anyone could label a domestic terrorist organisation. Are there people that call themselves a part of antifa that commit terrorist acts, but there are also, many more btw, Trump supporters that do so and I guess you and I would both agree that labeling the Trump campaign a domestic terrorist organisation would be out of place, although according to FBI domestic terrorism data that is about an order of magnitude more justified.

Show me a list of domestic terrorist groups that contains an organisation "Antifa" or what you call "demonstrably" true is very obviously untrue. But a common talking point among US right wingers.

Best regards
Thomas

I didn't say that antifa was a terror group....I said that it has been responsible for domestic terrorism, which is exactly what the Obama administration said. Antifa is hardly a "made-up boogeyman" if even our previous POTUS and his left-of-center administration were concerned about the group's violent tactics.

I think she should hook up with David Hogg and go ahead and spawn the Anti-Christ.

Oh Gramps, are you off your meds again? :rotfl:

Whether or not you find her annoying is irrelevant. It's her message we should be paying attention to. Your generation have left a terrible mess for the younger ones to clean up. The very least you can do is put up with her voice, given what you've done (by you, I mean your generation, not you specifically).

Stop with ageism please.

Really? You introduce the anti-christ in here and you can't take a little criticism on your generation? Wow

It's only the Generation that already fought catalytic converters and unleaded gasoline teeth and claw..... what's to criticize about those .....

I could be mistaken, but I seem to recall that Mr. Butthurt "ageism" had a few things to say about millennial on this forum as well... ageism seems to be ok when he is doing it, otherwise its snowfalkeism galore....

God yes. I believe in climate change and that it needs to be addressed, but yes I do find her annoying and thus tune her out.

Those that protest the loudest are usually those that pollute the most as well.
Or cue the politicians/diplomats who have their mouths full of must-do-something-about-climate-change: they drive their chauffeured diesels from one meeting to the other, fly business class or their private planes from one meeting to the other, all the while oracling how ordinary people should chip in "because...".
