Nope, hypocrisy Alert!

Nature made us as 'animals' (like all most other animals) requiring the consumption of other animals.

Nearly all species feed of other species...that is the order Nature. Having said that, we have figured out how create non-animal base nutrition sources, something must get disturbed or harmed in that process, a living thing of some source - like plants.

Hopefully, we can continue to refine innovate and improve our abilities to develop nutrition that no longer requires the use of other animals (yes, the Space grub, you see it movies..MREs are headed in that direction - if it's good enough for astronauts..it's good enough for us.

Killing an animal to eat, goes back to you being lost in wilderness...berries and plants may not sustain you as you try to survive.

You are going too far with the 'farm animal' analogy, what? Don't eat the fish either?

This is the the prime extreme example of 'concern for animals'...if find a cockroach in your home, or do you also politely show them the door? A mouse, the same?

Animals can become pest if certain numbers are not monitored and/or culled.

It is 'humans first' in the food chain, it's nice to care for pigs and chickens to this extreme but fact remains they have sustained our ancestors for centuries and modern society is slowly pulling away from that..but it cannot be suddenly outlawed 'to make people feel better. There are many mouths counting on the current process.

It is logical to do what is necessary to keep our species in existence...it is illogical to endanger our species to protect our feelings. Hunger always super cedes feelings.

Just as we are weening ourselves of fossil fuels, we are slowly weening from our dependence of 'meats'.

Bull fighting needs to stop, that is an archaic and senseless activity.

Please keep in mind that we have made great strides in the humane slaughter food sources, in the mean time..sorry cows, still need the Wendy's Baconator!

And finally, Food producers ARE NOT killing animals and getting off on watching them scream and cry in pain like the kid down the block from you. HUGE difference, one serves a purpose the other only brings the cruelty we are most capable of.

I have an issue with feedlots; feedlots are what has driven beef prices to ground, it's increased the volume of beef available and the quality has deteriorated. Grass fed beef is better for everyone including the beast.

The issue with slaughtering for me is Western countries using halal or kosher slaughtering techniques, this is inherently cruel. It's not necessary, we should not be allowing substandard methods of slaughter to pacify religious extremists, the welfare of the animals should come before whatever skyfairy you wrongly believe in.

I as born, raised and live in a farming community and work in the food industry, in my experience the biggest issue in cruelty in farming is lack of available and usable resources for the smaller farmers who dearly love their animals (my friends has names for his cows) but cannot afford/cannot justify in the hard years the cost of a call out fee for for a vet as well as the more onerous regulations and licensing of drugs and chemicals means that the jobs once done by the farmers themselves are having to be payed for through either outside services or additional training or, in a bad year, not done. On larger "industrial scale" as you might want to call them the justification of specialists and training are much easier to justify. What might cost the small farmer 1000 in unforcast bills costs the large farmer a pittance because the drugs and services are in stock and administered by the in house vet and in fact less likely to happen because of the in house nutritionist and bovine health specialists. Whilst there are certainly issues with the "faceless farm" the economies of scale can have a huge effect in favour of the animals welfare. What we shouldn't do is assume that because a farm has 100x the number of animals that it will be worse because of sensationalist expose's on the the TV and clickbait articles.

To keep animal welfare high the best method is to make sure that they are all able to be eaten.... an animal that has worth for your table has worth to be kept healthy, a pony that has no one to love it 3 weeks after christmas will wither and die by the side of the road, a pony that has $600 of meat to be used will have a market value and a market worth to be maintained.

Should Animal cruelty be a federal crime, yes. What we must do is assume the crime because of our heart strings.

I can finally agree with one of your posts!

While dog fighting involves Federal law already (recall Michael Vick's convictions) this will likely lead to make it easier to go after dog and other animal fighting rings, interstate sales of dogs from 'puppy mills', movement of racing horses and other animals in unsafe conditions or fraudulent health records, events of cruelty of animals, transportation of illegal exotic animals and excessive rates of deaths in horse racing. There are variances from state to state as to animal cruelty and this could limit that. One has to wonder how this will affect the transportation of animals on aircraft.

I'm pretty sure goose hunters don't just leave the carcass there to rot. A goose feed a lot more people than a duck. Hunting isn't cruelty. Most hunters I know are humane in their work. Nobody wants to see an animal suffer.

Nothing wrong with well cared for animals being turned into food. Although I do feel that it would be a good idea for all meat eaters to have to kill an animal sometime.

Medical science gets a lot of press about animal cruelty- and rightly so- I don’t agree with testing medicines on animals. But it’s at least in the process of trying to do something for the better good. Makes sense, I would then become limited to a diet of frog legs and fish.

Couldn't kill a rabbit, chicken, etc...but if I had family to feed, I'd have to bite the bullet - luckily (and happily no family).

Finally, animals need to live freely like us human and they also deserve protection. I have a Yorkie at home and I treat her like a baby. She has a comfortable heated dog bed, she eats quality dog food, and she can run safely at home and in the backyard.

Right on, California (particularly SoCal), is ahead of the pack in people, businesses coming around to recognize pet rights (largely dogs) on more friendlier level than ever.
I've mentioned the story re:my pooch and his little sidekick who stays with us periodically is also the most unique Yorkie (he has to be on a leash) but watching walk together is a funny sight in itself.

I don't know about the rest Calif. but here all over the western part of LA huge 'World Dog Day banners' flying from street poles everywhere reminding advocating people show their appreciation of dogs. I like where this going, because there are still too many of back alley gog fights by idiots.

It is particularly good to see the Senate pass this on a unanimous basis. I am sure that probably happens more often than we realize, but this is for a good cause, so. . . especially better.
