The best retort to this rant is of course produced by Abhijit Iyer Mitrahttps://theprint.in/opinion/in-rana-ayy ... oy/331730/
Basically Rana Ayyub is the modern day version of Arundhati Roy. "Every few years, the Western world seeks out, creates and builds bard of brown world’s pain"
If that’s the best retort you lot can muster up, then India has a serious lack of intellectual caliber. Guess all the smart ones have either left, or agree with Filkins and are sitting this one out quietly.
There’s ad hominem and there’s absurd ad hominem. This article manages to take absurd ad hominem to the next level. The author of the original article is attacked for ...wait for it... having the temerity to be white. What a crime. This overt racism is best characterized by this absurd line: “the white disdain for local government....”.Huh? If a white journalist had written about “brown disdain” for local government in the US... yeah. (Notwithstanding the obvious brown BJP disdain for local INC governments and vice versa).
Rana Ayyoub, whoever she is, is dragged over similar coal. Her worldview is obviously affected by Mumbai and Godhra, but that’s just mentioned in passing. Nothing to see there. No questions asked about what that might do to someone. Instead she’s depicted as a liar without any evidence. Not that the intellectual vacuity ends there. To illustrate his reasoning for calling her a liar, the author asks: Where are the photos of police shooting victims? Good question. When was the last time you saw a photo of a police shooting victim in a hospital bed published in any US, Canadian or British publication? There’s this (apparently alien to some Indians) concept of privacy and human decency and dignity that’s taken hold in the west.
The rest of the article is equally weak. It has all the markings of an inferiority complex, where frank observations must have some nefarious motivation or subtext. I’m sure some smart Indian will write a proper retort to Filkins article. I look forward to it. Nothing like a a good debate. But this article isn’t it. This article just demonstrates the lack of intellectual caliber and honesty doing the rounds in the segment of India that’s stuck with an inferiority complex driven siege mentality.
