Afghanistan

Mon Dec 09, 2019 4:43 pm

https://www.washingtonpost.com/graphics ... documents/

This reports insider views of what happened, what is happening, and sadly what will be happening in the country. A $trillion so far (and likely 3 more after all the VA claims are made toward the end of this century.

If you were to gather from some miserable tavern or bar a handful of middling intelligent drunks, toss in an equal number of middling dumb intoxicants and ask them about the status and results of the Afghanistan war: they would likely come up with something similar to what this Washington Post article makes clear.

Financially I think the US could survive the hit from all of this (it would have brought our infrastructure totally up to date), but we aren't surviving the political hit - and it could get worse.

New Vietnam. Same as old Vietnam. See also: Iraq.

I can’t imagine who exactly is surprised by this.

You might want to retitle this since it’s pretty major, if not surprising

The WA Post's three subsequent stories on this as well as the opening story has got relatively little play anywhere. I think those of us in the old enlightenment world are simply numbed beyond any ability to experience outrage. The US starts endless wars without purpose. Meh. Putin out foxes democracies. Meh. Truthiness is trusted more than facts. Meh. Maverick - I would be happy to have this retitled.

The U.S. should read a history book - the Russians couldn't conquer Afghanistan, neither could Britain. What makes the U.S. think they'll have any luck there?
Pakistan's aviation sector is coming back. It won't be as strong as our eastern neighbor, nowhere close, but it's going to grow over time. Stand by and watch.
