Top Gun: Maverick

Mon Dec 16, 2019 3:15 pm

The new Top Gun: Maverick trailer just dropped this morning.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=g4U4BQW9OEk

In addition to F-18s and a couple of shots of the venerable F-14, we have this mystery aircraft making an appearance. What do you think this new black jet is, Top Gun fans?

I just watched that trailer, and then I went to look for a thread on a.nut... having watched Hot Shots! so many times, it's difficult to ignore the bravado and jingoism in these films. Spectacular aerial footage is what I would watch "Top Gun - Maverick" for.

Here me out here, but what if this ends up being the official reveal of the SR-72? The military worked closely with the filmmakers on both films, and this would certainly be a helluva reveal!

Looks very formulaic and the dialogue in the trailer is, well, silly at best. LOL’d at ‘they’re called orders Maverick’. But as others have said, the aerial visuals look spectacular. I’ll just have to plug my ears at the speaking parts.

CGI could be nothing but pixels or a C152 for positioning purposes and generated from that.

I am guessing some of the shots I saw, the aircraft were just too close together. Whether that was CGI or two separate shots connected together by computer I do not know.
The canopy to canopy shot were possibly a shot deal but the fighter ascending straight up between two in level flight, yeah I am thinking not.

In any case it is a movie about something that does not exist, you have to use some imagination.

So in about another 10yrs of CGI will there just not be any need for actors/actresses. Just use CGI save all that money that made Hollywood, Hollywood.

It would be awesome to have the next generation skunk works aircraft revealed by a Hollywood movie.

The last scene was shot at NAWS China Lake and utilized a Blue Angel for the "fly-by" shot above the guard shack. It was apparently not CGI but practical effect combined with an overlay of the mystery aircraft CGId in place of the F-18. Apparently a good amount of the shots were air-to-air practical shots vs CGI resulting in the almost 1 year delay for the release.

Guess the Red Hawk is three decades too late to be fighting Kfir or modified F-5 aggressors in this age of alien incursions! :old:

This movie is going to full of plot holes, inaccuracies, and overall will probably be pretty stupid. It may be borderline awful but I’m going to utterly love it.

I’ll see it in theaters at least three times, I’m guessing.

Here's a review of the trailer by a former F/A 18 pilot and TOPGUN instructor:

He is cautiously polite (I think he gets the launch from the carrier wrong though)

I have to hand it to Tom Cruise. Even though he's a whacked out crazy Scientologist, the dude is perhaps one of the last great action movie stars who just keeps doing ambitious projects. Maverick isn't a vanity project, it's a labor of love. As he said, a love letter to aviation. He could've mailed this in with some CGI schlock, but wanted to stay true to the spirit of the original insofar as cinematography and aerial footage. I can respect that. Not easy, not cheap, but a lot of innovation in the process.

The original Top Gun gets panned for its plot, it's 80s-ish-ness, stilted dialogue, whatever, but the flying is magnificent.

I can easily look past the outdated helmets, the lack of gloves whilst flying, those nit picky things. Give me dogfighting, great aviation shots and I'll be happy.

Would be way exciting if a rogue Red Star Bug sans the USN markings attempt that to "sabotage" the flattop :alert: ..... :bouncy:

well? His name fit his profile. and he appeared to make CDR so he must have done something right. Screwups do not get scrambled Eggs on their Visor though I flew with a few great LCDR's in the Navy. and one was even a Mustanger who didn't graduate college And? was a full Line officer He was also an excellent mechanic and troubleshooter.

The Matchbox set for Top Gun Maverick has been released and it shows some of the aircraft likely to be present in the movie in perhaps a little more detail…

Clearly there is some sort of Hypersonic aircraft as shown in the trailers and now with a matchbox model as well as the F-14, both a 1986 and a 2020?? version and what also looks very much like a Su-57.

New Matchbox “Top Gun: Maverick”-themed line Reveals Shape Of Movie’s Mysterious Hypersonic Aircraft

One of the most interesting details about “Top Gun: Maverick” we have discussed here at The Aviationist since the first photos of “Maverick” in High Altitude pressure suit on set emerged in 2018, is the presence of a stealthy hypersonic aircraft in the sequel to the 1980s action movie.

In fact, all the trailers released so far (including the extended Super Bowl version) show Tom Cruise aka Capt. Pete Mitchell, a test pilot (according to the name tag shown in the first trailer), flying a stealthy experimental hypersonic while wearing an all-black high-altitude pressure suit similar to the actual ones worn by high altitude reconnaissance pilots in aircraft like the U-2 and SR-71. And, as already highlighted, the enigmatic test article seems to be somehow inspired to the Lockheed SR-72 hypersonic reconnaissance plane.

A new hint at the shape of the movie’s mysterious aircraft might be in the new Matchbox “Top Gun: Maverick” line available on Jun. 1, 2020. As reported by CNN, the popular toy brand (owned by Mattel) is about to release a series of die-cast models featured in both the 1986 and 2020 Top Gun movies, including the Grumman F-14 Tomcat (both the original and the 2020 version one), the Boeing F/A-18E Super Hornet, the hypersonic aircraft as well as the F-35, the P-51 Mustang (that also appears in the trailer) and another quite mysterious jet, whose shape reminds the one of the Russian Sukhoi Su-57 “Felon”.

The more I see of this release the more I look forward to the movie. I am pretty certain it will never be as good as the first one but I can suspend reality for a couple of hours and enjoy the experience.

Fears of piracy. That in other countries they will have strict limits on how many can be in a theater at one time. That there has been little or nothing in production since March won't be in the foreseeable future so a 1 year delay worldwide is probably assures have product then.

It used to be that a US 'Hollywood' film would show in the USA/Canadian market first, then 3-6 months later, be in Europe and other markets. In parts it was due to the limited numbers of hard film to distribute, the need to produce copies with subtitles in local languages, or edit for local censorship and to remove wordy parts many audiences wouldn't understand (accenting on action scenes) but also to better market films if a 'blockbuster' in the USA.

I guess we will have to come to terms that by the time this movie is released, Mavericks futuristic "Hypersonic" aircraft will already be in the scrapyard at DMA.
