UN Official Mladenov: No ‘Peace Process’ in Middle East

In an excellent and candid Al Jazeera interview with Nikolai Mladenov, UN Coordinator for the Middle East Peace process, he makes some excellent points from his unique perspective as the literal middle man and facilitator between all parties involved in trying to secure a two-state solution for Israelis and Palestinians.

Among his observations:

- there is no way for parties to have meaningful discussions currently, so there’s no peace process at all at this time

- some Palestinians are frustrated with ineffectual leadership and just want to ‘throw away the key’ and have Israel take over

- US policy regarding the Jerusalem embassy and settlements are totally inconsistent with long-established UNSC resolutions and consensus

- the Israeli election cycle makes consistent policy implementation difficult

- many Israelis, particularly the young, are aware that Gaza cannot be a ‘forever’ situation because there are 2 million people there who ‘aren’t going anywhere’.

- Palestinian factions are in a precarious position, especially because Abbas is now serving his 15th year of an original 4-year elected term - there isn’t enough room for young people’s ideas

- his office worries that if marginalization and poor human conditions persist, we’ll see a repeat of Syria and Iraq with massive upticks in radicalism.

- his office is ‘still waiting’ to hear what the WH peace plan is

Wait, I thought wonder-boy Jared Kuchner was on the case?
Don't tell me he might be in over his head?
:sarcastic:

This is a good recap from Haaretz on why the process is pretty much dead from Kushner’s end:

Given the decision about moving the US Embassy and the change in stance about Israeli Settlers on the West Bank, it is hard to see any prospect of a breakthrough.

One parameter that might have influance is the increased capabilities of Iran precision weapons. In a few years hezbollah will be able to strike all over israel.

Why shall they negotiate?

Plo is too weak and their non violent approach is laughed over by the Israel.

I am sure the EUropean pro-islamist left can't wait till that happens.

That's because the Peace Plan centers on Jared Kushner (the architect of the new ME Peace plan) is too preoccupied with shaking down every Arab bank account he possibly can while pimping out our troops to Saudi Arabia and any other country in need of a 'Hit Job'.

According to an Haaretz oped the right-wing plan is to destabilize Jordan so that the King is overthrown. I'm sure that will have no consequence for Europe !

Perhaps the State Dept should take a bigger role.

Can’t expect Jared to do everything.
