Thursday was busy, wrapped up a three day trip Wednesday night, commuted home Thursday morning and was off to the races the rest of the day. So I'm late, which I like to call airline time.

Wow, last leg to LAX yesterday evening and it went down to 1,000 RVR! Had to shoot a CAT III, all the CAT I operators either went missed or diverted to ONT. Good times!

The unintentional consequences of bidding all of your vacation in December so you have most of it off, and then bid the first week of January off too is some awkward conversations with friends who are still flying their pants off through the holidays. Hey! We all make our own beds and have to sleep in them, even if they are in a hotel most of the time.

This cartoon I actually drew and wrote last year but ran out of time to put it out as I had a couple others in the hopper. So it's great to let it escape it's file on my computer and let it release its holiday magic on the world!

I drew this panel before Covid and had a completely different caption which became irrelevant. It's a reminder of how humor is a reflection of the times. I think I cycled through at least three different captions before I settled on this one.

Day three of four. Today it's LAX to DCA, one of my favorite airports to fly into. As you know, routes can have a certain flavor of passengers and the one to DCA is one of them, interesting people on that flight.

Good morning,

Grinding through the last day of recurrent training. My last two cartoons deal with this part of the airline pilot career. It's an obviously necessary and critical part of our job, but it still is a long wind-up to brush all the dust off of some of the minutia you need to have access to. Thankfully the era of the grim-reaper check airman who's in the job to flex their ego and perpetually pose like they're the smartest person in the room are waning.

It's funny, as we commonly do, during the leg between EWR and LAX, the speculation of the next potential merger came. The one the seemed the most obvious was an eventual combination between Frontier and Spirit. Now as we all eat our popcorn and watch this play out, I know I'm wondering if this is a one-off event or a moment that will mark the next chapter of M&A in the passenger airline sector?

I don't think I've ever officially stated this but if anybody is so inclined to do a screen grab or a right-click image grab, and use or post my cartoons, please do so! I've given this a fair amount of thought. I got into this to make people laugh and as a bit of pressure relief to reflect back some of the stuff we all have to deal with. I'm not into this to make money. So if you want to use my cartoons, have at! The only think I will politely ask is is to leave them as they are. But use and share them to your hearts content.

Yes, someday I'll consolidate them into a book and make tens and tens of dollars, but for now it remains a someday. I'm busy.

There, got that off my chest.

Today's Throwback was a fun one a did a few years ago. We had to park just short of our gate today but then waited a solid ten minutes to park. Such a classic case of doing everything right and then having the airline operations thwart what should have been an on-time arrival.

That's ok, I was stuck on a plane for 40 minutes due to the gate ramp breaking at the wrong spot and they couldn't just pull back and go to another gate .

I have to imagine that there are some Aeroflot pilots out there who are not happy campers as the places the Russian airline can fly dwindle. Granted small potatoes as the Ukrainians fight for their lives but a simple observation from an airline pilot about other airline pilots.

Good Morning, or Evening or Afternoon, where ever you are on the globe.

I had made a quiet agreement with myself that I wouldn't put out any cartoons relating to the pandemic anymore. In the beginning, I felt the pressure to address it in the best way I could with a dose of humor, but as it wore on I realized that I, along with everyone else, was simply sick of talking about it or trying to be the wittiest person in the room about it.

BUT! I couldn't help put this one out, I feel the last two years have been a venue, for a small group of people to blast out their anger and if I'm being honest, their latent imbalances in their life. And this goes for people of all political and group persuasions that they identify with.

A little off topic, but I wonder what life is like at Aeroflot, let alone all the other airlines who's bread and butter is serving the conflicted areas too. Most people just want to get up in the morning, go to work, feel they're part of a good group of people doing something well, go home, have a warm place to go to with people you love and love you, have a group of friends. Life. Everything else, sigh...

Today's cartoon became a reality after a number of conversations with pilots who had kids that didn't have any ambition to fly a real airplane but played video games every waking moment when they weren't sleeping or at school. I know the military loves some of these kids because they do bring a skill set that has some value, but from the perspective of a classic airline pilot, it's disheartening.
