Hello,
Running a little late this afternoon to get my Monday cartoon out. Today's is light an fluffy one, pun intended. Sure I like to put out belly slappers, but sometimes less is more.
Start a 4-day tomorrow, so I'll see (or hear) ya'll out there.
Cheers,
JK

Running late today...

Some of my cartoons are beginning to take on a time-capsule feeling. I'm sure it took a few years for Uber and Lyft to become a thing, but it felt that one day they weren't there and the next day they were. This one felt right at the time in the spring of 2016.

Halloween usually is pretty easy to come up with something, so many characters to choose from and you can never go wrong with witches!

Day three of three and running late, throwing this one out of our crew room.

Some of my cartoons seem to be aging better than others. This one is based on the bar in the JFK Hilton that I used to stay at all the time back when I flew a lot of LAX-JFK transcons. At least they had a great breakfast.

Good morning,

Once again, I'm sending this one from a hotel room. Day 2 of three. I love the psychology of why we do what we do and how we couch those decisions. Today's cartoon pokes at that human trait.
Be safe out there, see you in the flight levels! (well, I'll see you on TCAS first!)

I did this cartoon in 2016, four years before Covid! I have never been ahead of any trend in my life. You know a fashion choice is on it's way out when you see me rocking it. I was a cockpit wiper way before Covid too.

The flight deck of an airliner can be a pretty gross place. Just imagine a bunch of middle-aged people scratching, coughing, sneezing, farting and picking their nose on a six hour trans-con. Yay.

The captain I drew is based on one of my favorite pilots I've flown with too.

I realize that with this one I'm stepping out of my lane a little, not that I haven't done corporate stuff in the past, but this one is much more pointed than a general cartoon lampooning human behavior that surfaces in large corporate environments.

This cartoon was a fun one to do as I was inspired from some scenes from our home. Plus one of our daughters illustrated the graphic on the girl's shirt. The free note pads in the hotel rooms are nice too.

Hope everyone has a fun thanksgiving filled with too much food, family, and friends!

The kitchen smells making you feel like a 12-year-old again inside
The drunk uncles talking politics, during a pop-up game of touch football with Grandma winning the scoring touchdown,
Having too many people at the table so you take it for the team, sit at the kid's table, then find the conversation is actually more engaging.
Notice that the aunts are dressing too young while the teenage girls are dressing too old.
Accidentally taking a nap after a nip of brandy from the snifter grandpa slid you with a wink during a football game on TV you don't care about.
Waking up to the clatter of dishwashing then sheepishly join in to help
Realizing time is ephemeral and indescribably precious while your wife drives you and the kids home in the dark

We were in the White Mountains of Arizona a few years ago where there are quite a few wild turkeys and my daughters and I saw one fly. We looked at each other in awe, then started laughing. They actually fly pretty well, and they're beautiful too! They won't be confused with the agility of a sparrow, or fine accuracy of a humming bird, but they can get it done. Funny, I can relate!

Some carttoons mean more than others for me to put out, but this one hits very close to home. I love hearing how many airlines are in a pickle trying to attract pilots.

Many of my cartoons just seemed obvious to do, and this definitely was one of them. I imagine bird strikes could have been a problem as well as it was probably important to have a really good TCAS system on an invisible airplane.

Good morning,

Today's isn't really a knee-slapper, but true nonetheless. A good friend of mine is a UPS captain, and it really is funny to compare the subculture of airline operations. There is a lot of commonality, but there are some quirky differences between airlines and types of fllying.

Picture
Airlines can be a fun business where you pull one string and it affects a bunch of strings somewhere else. And what makes it more fun is that you don't know what's being affected until it's almost a crises.

Red-eyes can be brutal for flight crews, and reindeer, but they can also be efficient, allow for a little more time at home, and consequently can go pretty senior sometimes. I used to purposely bid them because I could spend most of the day at home, get in a nice nap and then scoot off to work. The earlier ones, when you get in around 5:00, say in Boston, were doable, but the ones landing after the sun rose were, and are brutal. I'm sure Santa's reindeer feel the same way.

Hope everyone is enjoying this holiday season and will be where they would like to be at least at some point during this time. I have Christmas off, but then have to launch on a four day trip, and I'm a commuter, so this cartoon was written from the heart.

Cheers!

Passing a check ride done by a ball-buster is great, but so is doing one with simply a nice person. Either way, it's nice to get the check ride behind you!

Good morning,
I've found doing a cartoon for New Year's Day is rather challenging. All the tropes wrapped up with the holiday seem to be tired, and to come up with something original can be challenging. But I still try to rise to the occasion.

Today's cartoon was meant as a friendly nod to another cartoonist who used to put out a cartoon called, "Jetlagged". It was my playful way to nudge her into writing it again, or at the minimum, honor her cartoon. That's it.

Some cartoons seem more obvious to do than others. It was fun drawing that angle of a smurf sitting in a chair. As a Gen-X. I remember watching the Smurfs after school in the 80's and I have friends who fly for jetBLue, so hey, it's all in good fun!

Sometimes I can probably be too honest, but still, I think this one is funny. PIC, is "Pilot In Command" time, which once upon a time you needed to log in order to get hired by an airline you wanted to spend most of your career with. "Glass" is what it sounds like; flat, glass screens that show digital representations of the flight instruments instead of the analog, round gauges with needles. And "Turbine" is, well, a jet engine, whether the shaft is bolted to propellers or a fan with a shroud around it.

The question of, "just because we can do it, should we?", seems apt in many different arenas of our life regarding technology. The days of sitting in ground school for recurrent and even at some airlines, initial training, have been replaced by computer-based training. In my opinion, it's tedious and doesn't offer the depth of sitting in a class with others who have had various issues arise out on the line which triggers a discussion leaving everyone better professionals for it.

But department budgets inevitably carry the weight of the decision making around these issues.

I'm going to get another cup of coffee now, then sharpen some pencils and find a pen that works.

Today's cartoon is subtle, but that's ok. The humor is how a little thing can affect what a whole team of people and a lot of capital went into producing, like an airline flight.

Good Morning,

Settling into the rhythm of the year now. I've been sitting on this one. Not really a knee slapper but a simple observation I had awhile back that sparks many of my cartoons. Just finished my yearly CQ training. It's amazing how much the attitude and "presence" of the check airmen can affect that crews performance. We're already on pins-and-needles and if a guy has an edge too, well... Good times. We passed so now we can go careen around the sky for another year solving the worlds problems while boring a hole through the sky in the flight levels.

Hope everybody is safe and healthy out there.

It's Monday so...

Good Morning,

Today's cartoon basically addresses, albeit obliquely, something that dawned on me when all the new contracts for the regional airlines started leaking out a few months ago. It took me and most of my cohort about 12 years to make what a first year FO at a regional airline is now going to make on year one. This is a complex thing for many of us, on one hand, I don't begrudge them for it, because they're finally being paid what we all wanted when I was starting out over twenty years ago. But on the other hand, it's sure stings a little when a "kid" has absolutely no idea the battles most of us fought to get into the front of a decent, well-maintained airplane with a livable wage. God bless 'em.

Today's cartoon was fun to put together because it's simply another way to have fun with staffing. I always like the CEO office cartoons too, because we only see them in scripted, guarded ways, in meetings, zoom calls, official functions, CNBC, but you know their real conversations behind closed doors would be illuminating too. This is my way to imagine those moments.

Good Morning,

Today's cartoon was based on some of the female pilots I've flown with and some of the things they've had to put up with. Luckily, all of them have been class-acts and have some hilarious stories of dealing with insecure men and social stereotypes forced upon them. Anyway, they've had to deal with stuff that I never had too and luckily most of them have a great sense of humor about it!

There's a long line and probably multiple generations of us who sure, wanted to make some money, but also truly loved flying airplanes. Now, with the current chapter in our industry it appears that other motivations could be at play. I feel bad for those people.

June schedule is different, hence why I'm a tick late today folks. Day 2 of 4. Girls off for summer break so I can have trips touch weekends which normally is heretical in our home.
This one is definitely inside baseball for our tribe, but it's one that's been needing to be done for a long time. So here it is.
