Favorite Songs Not In Your Native Language

Thu Jan 16, 2020 5:23 am

Maybe I’m weird but in my travels and overseas friendships have picked up a lot of music references in languages other than my own. I mostly listen to rock, but there are talented artists and musicians in just about any genre and language.

I was cleaning out a backup drive and discovered a few memory lane items from other languages:

Thai rock from the 90s

https://youtu.be/EjYtmfulzkA

A X’Hosa South African classic from yesteryear

https://youtu.be/JBJVVhn7iuo

Moody rock from Cafe Tacvba in Mexico

https://youtu.be/UnIQaZooRVQ

Japanese guitar superstar Char

https://youtu.be/RTz57qNFxME

There’s lots more, but want to see what else is on recommend out there.

Favorite Songs Not In Your Native Language

How much time do you have? Is it okay if I stop at listing my first 200 favorite songs?
Seriously, since English is not my native language ALL my favorite songs are not in languages other than my own.

I'll use the standard of music I've learned the words to that are in a language I don't actually speak.

Mars Volta- Asilos Magdalena https://youtu.be/b2xiFxYbgtc (Spanish, although I guess he really speaks spanglish)

Sólstafir- Fjara https://youtu.be/A6j7mUxGz20 (Icelandic, I had surprisingly found myself learning words to a lot of Svartir Sandar despite having no idea what they meant)

Some foreign bands I like surprisingly have English lyrics, like Behemoth.

Well, it wasn’t limited to only English as a native language :)

How often do you see someone play a table harp or a 5-string violin?

Отава Ё - Про Ивана (русское готическое R'N'B) Otava Yo - Groove- https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YbBU06irWT8

How often do you see someone twirl a caber?

Отава Ё – Сумецкая (русские частушки под драку) Otava Yo - Russian Couplets While Fighting- https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0JQ0xnJyb0A

Cool song, plus ya gotta read the comments section on this one because they're hilarious. My personal favorite:

"Reads through the comments, I don’t get the hype it can’t be this serious

10 mins later I’m naked in my yard dancing around an open flame preparing to raid my neighbors"

Baila baila baila by Ozuna.
Instead of typing in "mods", consider using the report function.
Love how every "travel blogger" says they will never fly AA/Ethihad again and then says it again and again on subsequent flights.

The brosband and I went to visit his family over the holidays. I didn't realize I had missed radio stations like La Pantera and El Patron.

I stream some Estonian and Greek radio stations sometimes. Some of those stations play English language songs but they also play native language songs as well. Those are nice. I like to stay current but I still enjoy Mari-Liis and Flans.
You bet I'm pumped!!! I just had a green tea!!!

Mein Land and Engel, both by German rock band Rammstein.

Une Annee Sans Lumiere, by Arcade Fire.

Hoppípolla and Glósóli, both by Icelandic band Sigur Ros.

"Ojos Asi" by Shakira.
"El Alem Allah" by Amr Diab
"A felicidade," which has been interpreted by many singers, but I personally enjoy Gal Costa's version.
"La Vie en Rose," which though originally written and recorded by Edith Piaf, I enjoy Mireille Mathieu's version a bit better.
"Sonne" and "Engel" by Rammstein, there's something rather operatic and grandiose about some of their work that I enjoy
I enjoyed Roger Cicero.
"Kaptein" by Kurt Darren.

Agreed - "Engel" is great.
I'm watching Jeopardy. The category is worst Madonna songs. "This one from 1987 is terrible".

Haha, indeed, same here. Although, I have some French and Spanish songs on there as well. Does Frisian count as well?
Many happy landings, greetings from The Netherlands!

You're most welcome, Sir. It's nice to meet someone who shares my, um... let's call it "eclectic" taste in music. If you liked those, then you might also like these, though all are either in English or have no words at all, but the bands are at least not from the USA:

Finnish band doing Rock & Roll covers using folk instruments.

Thunderstruck by Steve'n'Seagulls (LIVE)- https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=e4Ao-iNPPUc

NOTHING ELSE MATTERS by STEVE´N´SEAGULLS (LIVE)- https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3JFb_aOn6rc

Steve ‘n’ Seagulls - Antisocial (in French)- https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=L_0gVyghUF4

These guys certainly look like they'd be a fun bunch to hang out and have a beer (or possibly a flagon of mead?) with.

Now we know why the Dutch Invasion wasn't nearly as successful as the British Invasion. There was Golden Earring...and then there was Focus...

Yeah, those two were the only ones I could think of.

Bonus points to the Golden Earring bassist for playing a Coral Longhorn Bass in concert occasionally. How often do you see that? https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=H4LPWpUPKnY

There is also the Dutch Eagles, but they're strictly a cover band, albeit a very good one- https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-NmPSWDfCwo

I'd like to hear the Dutch Eagles do covers of a few Eagles songs in Dutch rather than in English, but they almost never consult me on such decisions.
