Van Gogh Painting Stolen from Dutch Museum

Mon Mar 30, 2020 10:09 pm

Last night, a Vincent Van Gogh painting was stolen from a museum in the Netherlands that is closed due to the COVID-19 pandemic by burglars. Van Gogh's "The Parsonage Garden at Nuenen in Spring", which was painted in 1884 was stolen from the Singer Laren Museum just outside Amsterdam during the early hours of Monday morning on what would have been the famous painter's 167th birthday. The painting has been added to the Interpol list of stolen artworks with staff being shocked and authorities have not made a statement on how much the artwork might be worth. The painting was on loan to the Singer Laren from the Groninger Museum and authorities at the Groninger. Potential buyers should be aware that the painting has been stolen and police are asking information from the public to help with the investigation. The burglars broke into the museum at around 3:15 am local time and images from the scene show the glass doors at the front being broken. Even though the painting is not one of Van Gogh's most important paintings, it still has the potential to hold millions of dollars in the black market. Hopefully, the burglars will be caught and arrested and the painting will return to the museum unharmed.

the fact that it was stolen on the artist's birthday, is fishy, another rich person, wanting to hang the painting in his house for their enjoyment only. how many paintings have been stolen now, never to be recovered?
seems like the number keeps growing each year.

Easy Come, Easy Gogh.
Wake up to find out that you are the eyes of the world
The heart has its beaches, its homeland and thoughts of its own
Wake now, discover that you are the song that the morning brings
The heart has its seasons, its evenings and songs of its own

Sadly, some jerks took advantage of the likely lower levels of security a relatively small museum has, the Covid-19 crises with far fewer witnesses and reduced policing to steal this painting. You also have to consider an insider or a good casing of the museum as well as a solid buyer for it. I hope they all are stupid enough to get caught or lucky enough to get a nasty case of the Coronavirus.

Indeed, probably stolen at the request of someone who really enjoys it. Stealing a famous painting is rather pointless if you intend to sell it in the open market. You see a lot of stolen art in the possession of criminal organizations like the Maffia. This is for use as a bargaining chip when they get caught.

It is a very uncivilized burglary, art should be for the enjoyment of everyone, a museum is the right place for it. Not to mention, it can be taken care of, in order for future generations to enjoy.
Many happy landings, greetings from The Netherlands!

Given the current global situation, maybe this is appropriate...

Producing it our way avoids getting spit on the computer screen, helps limit the spread of coronavirus.

Something to consider, eh?

You think the Netherlands has higher rate of Corona due to their weird pronounciations? Always suspected it was a contagious language.

TBH I'm just making light of what is a sad occasion, theft of an art work from a place where it was shared with the public.

It's sad thieves are a part of every society.

We have many great NL members here on a.net and in this thread.

I'm pretty envious of NL freedoms and open mindedness.

I hope the thieves get caught and prosecuted to the full extent of the law.

This painting was paid for long before it was stolen . Someone wanted it badly and saw the opportunity. However I suspect it was also an inside job to take advantage of known times.

One thing that scares me about Europe is how "good" that organised crime is at what they do. I'm thinking of the various mafias and groups such as Pink Panthers, the group that robbed the Helvetic plane at Brussels Airport etc. I don't think anywhere in the developed world has such effective high end criminals.

I guess we see an example of that here.
