Wed Apr 01, 2020 7:05 am

Hi guys
What happens these days is a nightmare everywhere in the world.

Do you think there is a chance to have some holidays in August ?

I'd say two chances - slim or none. Problem is, slim just rode out of town.

This will cool over April, level out in May and things will be back to normal by June.

I hope you're right, I really do. But here in the UK at least, I don't think that'll be true.

If this follows something seen before we might expect things to calm down when the more hot periods arrive, but that will come back after the holiday periods.

If we can use China as example they will probably start to recover, as southern Europe. Nothern Europe will still be in dire straits.

USA is only starting right now. I assume september october is when USA will start to experience the worse when things getting really bad outside NY.

South America can expect something terrible during june july when their winter periods is on its peak.

It’s terrible here in France.

Infection will die down as France is getting on top of things, but there will still not be a vaccine or wide spread immunity. Some measures will persist until either one of those is reached. Or you have flare up after flare up, and one or the other will slip through the gaps. Just look at Europe..... France had it fairly good under control until that evangelical conference spreading it all over the place, Germany had it looked down pretty good.... until Ski vacationers came home from Ischgl, where some assh*le decided not to tell local health authorities about someone on his staff having tested positive.
https://www.politico.eu/article/the-aus ... continent/

I like DL717s optimism, but there isn´t really much of an indication that heat does much to slow the virus by much, only near hospital grade hygiene and distancing will, and as Ischgl has proven: One stupid f*ck can make it all come apart again.

Now regarding the question.... that depends a lot on where you want to go, what the situation in France is at that time, and what the situation will be where you want to go.

best regards

Depends on the type of holiday. Driving to a rented apartment and hiking in the surroundings could be possible, maybe even flying to it. Everything that means close contact with other humans will be out imho or severely restricted.

If travel restrictions are lifted then I can go to my parents' vacation home on the coast of Brittany so there is that. We can sail on our boat without risking contact with others.

More than vacations, what I really miss are restaurants and cinemas, though. And I don't think they can survive with months and months shut down.

For vacations, there is the other issue of will people still have vacation time ? Some companies are making people take their vacations right now, the labor laws have even been relaxed here in France so that it can be forced upon employees. If this continues for a couple of months I would also expect the same to happen to public employees...so August might be a month to work, something not seen since 1935 in France !

The corona will be over when 60% + of the population in one region has got it or there is an efficient vaccine available.

Efficient vaccine is 12-18 month away.

Summer temperatures will slow things down and winter accelerate it.

Many regions like norway denmark with total lockdown might make it to the summer but after 3 month in lockdown and economy in full tailspin will they repeat the lockdown it in september or will they let people getting sick to reach the 60%?

When the restrictions were ramped up in Australia nearly 2 weeks ago to include the closure of pubs, gyms, resturants, etc, and the ban on international travel, the PM warned that this would be for at least 6 months. Now interstate travel is almost impossible with most states & territories closing their borders to non-essential travel, and those that have closed their borders are imposing a 14 day quarantine on those that come in. So this means that here in Melbourne, the furthest that I can travel is west to the South Australian border, or north to the NSW/Queensland border without a permit. Though even to leave my house now, it must be to either purchase essential food & supplies, work & education that can't be done at home, and to seek medical care. So going on holiday, even to a holiday house that you own, has been outlawed. The police have started fining people who have been out of their homes without a valid reason. Can't see interstate travel opening up until at least late spring, and maybe the same for limited international travel - NZ will probably be the first destination that Aussies can travel to without permission.

Of course you can holiday in August. Just don't count on going abroad or to any cities. You might have to settle for a holiday cottage by the beach.

After a few months in solitary confinement with my wife and kids I’m not sure I want to spend 3-4 weeks on holiday with them.

US - cruise line cancelled my son's cruise with wife for late May.

He has re-booked for mid-Sept. I think that is optimistic. But he hasn't asked my opinion often, or paid attention to my advice when solicited hardly ever in the past 35 years.

What I'm seeing and hearing in Texas is many of the small businesses that depend on vacation travelers for much of their business/ income, are closing permanently. They don't have the financial resources to weather a year with 20-30% less business. Big business enterprises will almost certainly be back in operation. Very small operations where the tourist/ holiday traveler is a supplement to the owner/ family will be back in operation.

The nice small restaurant run by a family, likely will not survive.

August is a bit early to plan/ pre-pay in my SWAG, but things should be well on the way to normalization.

Unless this is a re-occurring virus. No one knows yet if having had COVID-19 once, a person is immune to catching it again. That SHOULD be the way it goes. This is still a very new, very poorly understood disease.

And the next wave starts.

It all depends on how authorities are able to track the contact points and give precise instructions to the public.

Not China pandering, not trade/commerce biased and not supply based recommendations like don't use masks.

You should probably make plans that only include travel by car or motorcycle.

Covid-19 cannot be contained and will only go away by herd immunity, cure or vaccine, either of which don't seem to be around the corner.

2020 will be a big entry in the future history books.

Hi Mel,

Are there any exceptions being made for those who need to travel to other states/territories to attend to family members who are gravely sick or near death (not from CV though)?

Exceptions are being made for people who need to travel for compassionate reasons, although they still have to apply for a permit to cross the state border.

Those living in border towns are still allowed to cross for work, or to buy essential items.

I am just canceling my trip Stockholm alicante for easter.. Been sitting in phoneline the whole day and now it seems like it will be moved to haloween.

For summer we plan to drive thru europe stockholm alicante. Last year we did stockholm, gdansk, berlin, paris, bordeaux, madrid alicante.

This year if possible I even consider to sleep in the car to avoid the risk of hotels.

In the UK, FCO are advising against ANY international travel.

That means that Travel Insurance will not be valid.

Just for starters.

Secondly, Government are advising against Non Essential travel. I doubt that they will view holidays as essential.

Until this peaks, (which has not happened yet) booking ANY trip is a seriously bad idea.

Of course, you can. You can travel from your flat...to the balcony...and back.

I do not know, if it will be wise to travel.I fear, that many things will be still restricted, like restaurants, clubs e.g. I also fear, that international travel will still limited. So domestic travel yes, but limited, and international or cruise ships, no.
