What are your streaming/binge watching currently?

Wed Apr 08, 2020 8:21 pm

With all this self-isolation stuff going on, many are watching a lot more on their screens.

Right now I am completing Star Trek: Discovery and next for me will be Picard
With the fam I am also watching Monk and Bones.

What are you and have you been watching?

just binged watch OZARK, Tiger King, Unbelievable, The Stranger

I got excited that HBOHOME and HBOgo were free, but the shows that are free are really old.
I am now tired of T.V. lol now I'm fixing up my house.

I would recommend shameless, arrest development. for those who haven't watched them before.

We’re currently watching:

Ozark
Atypical
Sex Education
Better Call Saul (weekly)

As many films as we can find that neither of us has seen before.

Our daughters recommended Tiger King but we haven’t started yet.

Not binging on much. But thanks to streaming TV, I've been watching foreign TV channels. Right now I'm watching the UK TV channel Dave and catching up on Red Dwarf. Apparently they're airing a new feature length episode tonight (well, tomorrow morning here in Asia).

We are doing classics - re-watching both the X-Files (season 2) and The Shield (season 1).

I can't get to the TV since I activated Disney+ for the kids.
I have been watching lots of Clone Wars though.

Watching Stargate SG-1...for the third time. Last time was at a posting where there wasn't much flying to do and nearly no internet a few years back.

Recent or currently:

Westworld
Ozark
Star trek Picard
The expanse for the 2nd time
Midsomer murder
the Handmaid's tale
Doctor foster
Chernobyl

Next up will be Man In the High Castle again
Then if the new Star Trek discovery season isn't out yet I'll probably start binging classic Dr who.

I've become quite a bit hooked on Buzzr, where by the time this is all said and through, Ill probably have made it through all roughly 17-hundred episodes of Match Game.

Also, for whatever the reason, I'm finding joy in watching the Olympic Channel, which is re-runs of the Olympic Games. A shame as it's only NBC broadcasts though as I'd love to go back and watch the 92 and 94 games again.

This is cool. Indeed, we have a little bit more free time now.

Any other good aviation-related series or films (non-documentary)?

Well that is a looong list, Google can certainly pull pretty much all of them. But here are three I will offer up, each very different:

Up in the Air (the modern world of flying meets the future)
Strategic Air Command (6 turning, 4 burning)
Apollo 13 (this week is it's 50th anniversary)

Manufactured Irony begins at 15:31. Did not realise until watching this how close in production Apollo 13 and Forrest Gump were. But yes, in any case, wow, 25 years already...

Still trying to get caught up on RWBY and some recordings of some races from last year in the Pintys series, not making much headway however. Seems I only want to watch stuff when I'm at work lol.

Some strange youtube binging...

A channel that focuses on canal boating in the UK. Something very soothing about put-putting along with ducks and swans on big ditches cut into the earth centuries ago, working similarly aged locks to go up or down in elevation, deciding to moor up when you see a particularly appealing meadow or pasture. It completely takes my mind off the current situation.

Another channel about learning German, in a fun way. They go up to people on the street and ask other German speakers loaded questions like "do you think Germans have a sense of humor?" or "do you think Germans drink too much?". Text on the screen gives both the German and an English translation. I've learned a lot about how Germans view themselves and their neighbors, and about the various German dialects and neighbor languages. I don't feel that I've learned a lot of actual German since they speak at full conversational speed and I largely end up reading the English translations and only pick up the German words a tiny bit at a time. I suppose I'm learning a bit about the cadence of the language, and some sentence structure and vocabulary, but that's about it.

The channel names are "Cruising the Cut" and "Easy German", if anyone else is interested.

There is a similar channel called 'Easy Spanish' I have been using to brush up. Very fascinating interviews with Mexicans from all walks of life in CDMX...it's amusing how different their views of themselves are from the folks from other Latin American countries living/working there.

Youtube is a truly incredible resource in times like these - everything from documentaries to engineering analyses to Alaskan bush flying videos to concerts. Impossible to get bored really.

Yes, there is a whole family of "Easy (language)" channels. I'll have to look at the Spanish one. I took about five years of Spanish in school, when I was aged 11-16 or so. As usual if you don't use it you lose it. It'd be nice to rekindle my knowledge and learn more about how different Spanish speakers view each other.

And I agree about how great YouTube is. To be honest after being raised on decades of broadcast TV, I thought you'd need large number of professionals working together to make a video worth watching. I'm still surprised that so many of these channels are one person affairs that continue to produce content that is so compelling. People are just wonderfully talented and wonderfully driven to produce content. It's a great benefit because I'm always running into niches I already find interesting and want to learn more about, or totally new niches that I never thought I'd be interested in but end up gaining such an interest when I finally do encounter the topic.

A lot of this is due to the algorithms. For example I had watched a few videos on how the Vikings had invaded and then settled in to the English North and Midlands. A lot of times the Vikings used rivers to push inland and make settlements. Some how the algorithm decided I might have interest in English rivers, so it started throwing narrowboat videos at me, and it worked. I'm not sure how I'd ever had made that association on my own.

I have compared YouTube Music to Amazon Music and it's pretty clear the Google algorithms are much better at finding stuff I want to listen too. My main complaint is that YouTube Music is really just a wrapper around regular YouTube so it mixes together my viewing and my listening histories which makes it hard for me to find things in my history. I'd be much happier if they kept viewing and listening histories separate.

Well, I just "forced" my wife to watch Strategic Air Command. While it's almost two hours of pretty cheesy USAF propaganda, for us old aviation buffs, there's a lot of plane porn in there! You could almost feel the room throbbing as those B-36s were taking off.

Nothing aviation-related on my list but some good ones here if you have the usual streaming content:

My Brilliant Friend - slow burn Italian series set in 1950s Naples, pure quality filming, acting, writing etc. But fair warning, no explosions or car chases. About growing up as a woman in Italy back in the day. Your wives will think me for the suggestion.

Curb - my go to any time I need relief from a Trump presser or CV19 in general

Hunters - mind blowing, Americanized Nazis Gone Wild. One of Al Pacino's best roles in decades.

Mind Hunters - great series about the birth of the FBIs Behavioral Analysis unit. Top notch casting, writing and based on actual events

Ryan Toys - my son watches this crap on You Tube, it helps you re-lose your faith in humanity any time you come close to regaining it. Adding it here as one show to avoid at all costs.

And many more but the first four are my recent/current faves.

Interesting take. I thought it was a really good story, marred by hammy over-acting and often times pointless expositions. I will not say that ruined it, but I tend to expect better out of Al Pacino. Overall, I would say it felt very contractual...

One thing I miss: Actual episodic television. Everything produced nowadays seems to always have some kind of "story arc" that requires you to watch ten shows to understand and reach the conclusion of.

Sure shows like Friends and Frasier and MASH and Big Bang Theory etc. may have some level of story progression and character development (well not all, don't think Seinfeld had any in the entire series ;-) ), but otherwise they are mostly just fun to watch and you can watch most out of order without losing the enjoyment of an episode.

Nowadays a lot of "shows" are more like ten hour long movies. Sometimes I just want to watch an hour or two and then be done.

OK, rant over, please carry on and remain calm. :spin:

You’ll love it, one of the best programs on tv today.

I binge watched Black’ish loved it, knocked off Fresh off the Boat, also loved it, started Black AF, wtf is the point??? It’s just an ego trip for Barris, he’s remaking Black’ish with him as lead, he’s a lousy actor and comes across as a bad human.
