Wildfires threaten Chernobyl and Pripyat

Tue Apr 14, 2020 10:58 am

2020... *sigh*... it's certainly one for the history books, even though we're not even halfway through.

BBC are reporting that wildfires now threaten the Chernobyl nuclear power plant, with some fires now reaching Pripyat. I wonder what the risks would be if the fires did reach the plant, and if the fires disturbing the local area would release more radiation by burning/breaking down forests etc.

I don't think there are trees close to the plant.

True, but without being an expert I was pondering whether the forests that are burning which would have been in heavily contaminated areas) might release a bit more radiation via their destruction, which could then disperse in the smoke.

Yes it would and that's why it is a problem.

From measures taken (the fires are several weeks ongoing) it's trivial amounts of radiation.

That's true, at least not the time I was there.
