VE Day

Thu May 07, 2020 8:18 pm

Happy VE to all for tomorrow.

A great opportunity to remember those that fought and fell defeating Nazi Germany 75 years ago.

A real pity that CoVID19 has prevented public celebrations.

My mom is 91 and a teenager living in eastern NY State and remembers VE day well. It was a date of very mixed emotions. Yes, part of the WW II was over, but it still continued over 3 more months vs. Japan, the USSR controlling most of Eastern Europe and part of Germany and would do so for around another 45 years, it was the beginning of the Cold War. 10's of millions, soldiers, civilians, victims of genocide, many survivors with damaged bodies and minds.
Yes, it is sad that commemorations of this anniversary cannot be done due to the Pandemic.

I believe he is referring to the Soviet Occupation of Eastern Europe. I few years ago my Grandmother passed away and boxful of odds and ends was offered to me. While sorting through the box I found my Grandfather’s notepad he had carried during the war and noted one entry. “They announced victory in Europe today, the guys are pretty excited.” He was a very stoic man...his comment on the end of the war in Europe made me laugh.

That is exactly what I meant. I have seen comments that Soviet troops was sent back to Ukraine to fight anti Soviet troops after VE days.

The protests in 1989 starting the liberation of Eastern Europe started as a reaction between baltics and poland against Soviet - Nazi Molotow Ribbentrop and starting occupation and aggression against Eastern Europe.

Russia today only see VE day as end of patriotic war 1941 to 1945. Russian aggression against Finland, Baltics and Poland in 1939 to 1940 is not included nor informed about.

Russian public becomes very surprised when people in Eastern Europe brings it up together with the long occupation followed.

As a swede trying trying to understand Swedish actions 1939 until 1945 and special summer 1940 to end 1942 I consider that Sweden in 1941 saw a Germany beating Poland and in practice UK and Russia / Soviet in weeks makes the actions easier to understand. ALso Swedish relations with Soviet 1920s to 1989 was a s best frosty or even it was in all Swedish interests that a regime change support of special Finland was in our interest.

Really a damn shame the 'rona had to get in the way. With how few (relatively) veterans are left, we are quickly running out of chances to experience these anniversaries with veterans from the largest armed conflict in human history.

I went to the 70th anniversary of D-Day celebration at the National World War II Museum in New Orleans back in 2014. Great experience. Would've liked to have been there for the 75th anniversary last year. Would've been really cool to have been able to do a 75th anniversary tour with the National WWII Museum this year, particularly in the Pacific. But, they're hella expensive...
