Burr out as Senate Intelligence Chair amid Insider Trading Probe

Thu May 14, 2020 9:29 pm

In what I think is a huge story, FBI agents executed a search warrant on Sen. Richard Burr (R-NC) amidst an investigation into insider trading stemming from stock trades made before COVID-19 became a pandemic. The Huff Post reports as follows.

https://www.huffpost.com/entry/richard-burr-steps-down-stock-trading-probe_n_5ebd6eaac5b635d6a6d15b3f

From what I have heard, the FBI is also looking into Dianne Feinstein (D-CA), and Kelly Loeflerr (R_GA) as well. In the case of Burr, a search warrant was actually executed. Supposedly, search warrants against a sitting member of congress usually don't happen unless someone real senior in the Justice Department signs off on it, meaning that this could have been signed off by the Attorney General himself. I honestly don't see how Burr survives this, and if Barr is looking into a Senator from his own party, that cannot be good. Richard Burr is in a lot of trouble here. If the other reporting is correct, there could be multiple members of Congress from both parties going down.

Politically, this is going to make it much harder for Republicans to hold the senate. If Burr does go down, the current Governor of North Carolina is a Democrat who would appoint his replacement. Additionally, Thom Tillis is the other senator from NC and his seat is up for reelection this year. This won't help him even though he may have nothing to do with it. And presidentially, NC could theoretically flip to Biden.

Additionally, Loeffler is going to be hurt by this in Georgia (I don't see her even making a runoff, as the other republican in the Race Doug Collins looks like the favorite). David Perdue is up for reelection in Georgia as well and he is mired in his own stock scandal about the timing of an IPO benefiting him. The democrats could flip the senate based on these two races alone. And that doesn't take into account Mark Kelly leading in AZ, the MT race being close, KS republicans possibly nominating Kris Kobach again, and the Susan Collins situation in Maine.

Burr looks to have erred big-time. Given its bipartisan nature, this scandal will possibly distance more who are already cynical from both parties and may lead to further independent registrations.

Taking the mantle of the SIC chair is also a huge opportunity for Senator Rubio.

This is absolute “hearsay,” but I read somewhere that the NC governor must replace Burr with a Republican.

Sen. Burr must resign from the Senate. If others also used 'insider knowledge' for themselves or others, they must resign too, and ASAP.

Not hearsay. It's fact. Even though Gov. Cooper has the authority to name a replacement, it must be of the same party as the vacating Senator.

I don't think Burr will resign, especially since he indicated he'd be retiring in 2022 (though Senators make pledges one day and break them the next: see Rubio and Collins as an example). And McConnell is likely to give him a light slap if it means preserving his majority.

The level of stupidity from all involved is amazing, of course let the investigation reach a conclusion, but, at what point does a person not think that any large trades will raise flags ?

Don’t forget that Burr was chairman of the Senate Intelligence Committee that unanimously agreed to release an intelligence report showing Russian interference in US elections. That certainly didn’t fit the narrative that Donnie Boy was trying to portray.

Political retribution for sure, but wonder how long other milquetoast Senators will go along with Trump as his poll numbers drop?

Payback, as they say. is a bitch.

Let’s hope Senator Burr et al., get those brass knuckles out and give him the treatment.

Metaphorically, of course.

:checkmark:
And we got a winner!

While the investigation is warranted, the DoJ under Barr would have sunk it.

This is just to ensure that Republican Senators stay faithful to the Führer, even when dumping Trump seems to be crucial for quite a few of them to keep their seats. Because once that dam breakes.....

I wouldn't be surprised if one of them ends up dead before the election.... as a "message" to the rest.

Best regards

Not only Burr, but his brother in law also. There’s no way a search warrant for his phone would be ok’d without Trump/Barr’s assent.

Not sure how much longer before Trump starts arresting three generations of a family like his lover, Kim Jong Un, does.

Loeffler will get a slap on the wrist as long as she does anything Trump wants (ESPECIALLY her husband). Normally he would throw them under the bus in the Georgia Senate race, especially with known ass-tonguer, Doug Collins running, but she may be more useful in her current position.

I keep hearing about Feinstein, but it seems she has everything on the up and up. Speaking of, I hardly see Feinstein anymore. Wonder how she’s doing?

The GOP in General is in trouble on this one.

1. Burr knew what was coming
2. Burr knew that Leadership was not going to do anything proactive(McConnell, Trump).
3. If Burr was exposed by GOP leadership, then they didn't think about what effect it would have on a troubling response to Covid-19.

Burr has 2 years left till NC can vote him out, which is actually a bit troubling. Of the two GOP senators, he is the more moderate.
Where ever you go, there you are.

Yeah the Feinstein angle of all this turned out to be a non-starter. It turns out that while her husband did indeed move some money around the same time, his trades racked up losses, which more or less dispels the notion that this was any sort of insider trading.
