Highland Park Cafeteria in Dallas Permnantely Closed

Fri May 15, 2020 6:27 pm

The Highland Park Cafeteria in Dallas has been permanently closed after 95 years. The restaurant was already closed on March 16 due to the coronavirus pandemic, but the decision has been made to make the shutdown permnant this week. At one point, Highland Park Cafeteria had 8 locations in Dallas, but after 1996, only had one in Casa Linda. An auction of a number items in the restaurant is taking place until June. It is very sad to see an iconic scene of Dallas dining close forever and another victim of COVID.

Just the beginning. Would not be at all surprised if by the end of this year we have close to 50% of all non national chain restaurants shutting their doors for good.

My wife and I are making a point of supporting a couple of very good local restaurants during this time. Carryout isn't the same as dining in but it helps.

Absolutely. In some ways it's painful for me to see the wave of people who are cooking more at home now that they're cooped up. Yes, cooking is a great productive hobby and skill set, but to see that trend while restaurants collapse all around is painful.

Highland Park Cafeteria is a tradition for older members of the East Dallas community. We always visit when we are in the Dallas area.

But it has failed to attract new, younger customers. Its customer base has been literally dying off for years.

Closure for good. Not unexpected.

COVID-19 is the final straw, and will be for a lot of places.

A high-end popular steak house in the Fort Worth Stockyeards area has been closed by the owners, deciding the cost of competing for too small a market now is too high.

A major popular with the young night spot in the Dallas Deep Ellum has announced they will not reopen. Look for more announcements to come.
Not all who wander are lost.

Five Sixty at Reunion Tower has also closed.

That is pretty much true for all cafeterias now; Luby's is in trouble, Furr's has mostly disappeared... it would seem like cafeterias would be a popular alternative to pre-fab "fast food", but that is not the case.

Are you thinking of Hoffbrau? That was actually on the West Side, near TCU, and the owners couldn't make a deal with the property management to make it through this crisis. Ironically, it usually was packed to capacity during the Colonial tournament - which is just around the corner...
I'm going to have a smokin' hot body again!
I have decided to be cremated....
