Are there still American cities with police foot patrols ?

Thu May 21, 2020 5:26 am

I imagine NYC still has police ‘walking a beat’ but are there any other cities that still incorporate this practice?

I have seen Chicago PD on foot in the past but not as much in the last 3 years.

I believe the Downtown Area Patrol in the Louisville First Division incorporates some foot patrol.

Indianapolis and St Louis

A number of cities keep undercover patrols on feet.

Is the one in Philly still around? They did an experiment a decade back on foot patrol, but I am not sure whether that is still ongoing.

On a related note, a number of PD in US has Mounted Patrol. Houston, Dallas, and Austin has them for sure.

Los Angeles Police Department still has an assignment code for foot patrol: FB. For example, a foot patrol beat officer on Venice Beach may have the radio call number of: 14 FB 3.

Most downtown/central business districts in the US have foot patrols, both uniform and plainclothes.

I think the one here in Philly still exists in Center City, though whether or not it’s in use right now I can’t say. I do know that during the Christmas season, when the village is up, there are a LOT of police there.

Once in a while, I’ll see a bike officer in my neighborhood, but I don’t ever remember seeing an officer “walking the beat.”

San Francisco still have them and looking to expand.

Two San Francisco supervisors plan to introduce legislation Tuesday that would force the city’s Police Department to rework its approach to deploying foot patrols to prevent crime and foster better relationships with communities.

Vegas certainly has them in downtown and also parts of the strip. Similarly can see bike patrols in these areas as well.

Our small town has bicycle and foot police on the weekends in the downtown area.

On a note of debatable relevance, the last town in the United States to employ people as gas lamp-lighters was San Luis Obispo, California.

SF, Oakland, but they are usually found in places with high foot traffic. Doesn't make sense to have foot patrols in industrial areas or primarily residential areas unless it's a NYC-style affair. But around my local BART station there are often some OPD officers standing around.

We've had bicycle patrols for years. 10 years ago, I saw a policeman patrolling outside an upscale strip mall at night on a motorized stand up people mover.
