"signature" songs of popular artists

Thu Jun 11, 2020 1:51 am

This game has a few guidelines:
* The artist wrote it or was the original performer
* The artist would be proud of it
* The song was successful with radio airplay or similar.

Examples:
Poison, you'd have to go with Every Rose Has Its Thorn. It is a catchy tune that's lasted 30 years and still works.
Nickleback, Photograph, not a super talent artist IMO and then he wrote this impressive song.

Avicii's Levels

Kygo's Firestones. It's not the one that made him famous but it's his first big one to really show his signature intricate melodies. You could play it on nearly any simple percussion instrument and it would still work well.

Martin Garrix's Don't Look Down. I don't think Animals is fast-paced enough to be his signature, at least not anymore.

In The Mood was probably it for Glenn Miller.

Fortunate Son by those guys who do Fortunate Son.

Italian Restaurant for Billy Joel.

Feel Alright by Steve Earl.

Don't Drink the Water by Dave Matthews

Violence by Grimes.

Parts of this remind me of twenty years ago Toby Emerson. This is not a bad thing. . .

I always thought Stay filled that role, but YMMV...

Anyway, you may like a lot of what Alpha 9 is up to these days. Higher Place and Skin are both memorable...

A few off the top of my head:

The Smiths - The Headmaster Ritual
U2 - Sunday Bloody Sunday
Nine Inch Nails - Head Like A Hole
REM - Losing My Religion

Nirvana - Aneurysm (cannot choose songs with more radio play because Cobain wasn’t that proud of them)
Alice In Chains - Rooster
The Stone Roses - Waterfall
The Stranglers - Peaches

Falls foul of LCDFlight's first rule - written or first performed by artist. It was written and performed by Paul Anka in 1960.

Also falls foul on taste grounds, but that's another story! :duck:

Strongly disagree with the Poison choice. They have quite a few great ones. but Nothing but a Good time is much more catchy and is actually older.

Credence Clearwater Revival.

"Landslide" Stevie Nicks/Fleetwood Mac -- she technically wrote it and performs it in all of her shows, but it was released on a Fleetwood Mac album.
"What's Love Got to Do With It?" -- Tina Turner
"Friends in Low Places," as much as I hate that song, by Garth Brooks.
"Heartbreak Hotel" -- Elvis Presley
"He Stopped Loving Her Today" -- George Jones
"Stand by Your Man" -- Tammy Wynette
"Coal Miner's Daughter" -- Loretta Lynn
"Bette Davis Eyes" -- Kim Carnes

Carry On Wayward Son by Kansas
Flying In A Blue Dream by Joe Satriani

I was going to suggest a different song for Tina Turner but looking at the rules, no.

Also, I was today years old when I discovered that Hoagy Carmichael wrote "Georgia On My Mind".

I would take issue with ‘Hotel California’ - while it’s their best known song, only Don Felder seems to be proud of it. The songs that were hits and also showcased their harmonizations most are arguably ‘One of These Nights’ and ‘Take It Easy’.

Stevie Nicks, Madonna, AC/DC, Springsteen have all had such long careers with a wide variety of hits, there will never be consensus on a signature song.

Depeche Mode, I would argue "Personal Jesus" is a more definitive song. With Peter Gabriel, after listening to the "Say Anything" rewatchables podcast, his signature song has to be "In Your Eyes." No other song by him resonates culturally like that one.

I understand your choice with ‘Rambling Man’, but I feel ‘Whipping Post’ shows off ABB’s individual strengths more.

As for “Hotel California”, quite clear who’s more proud from how often Felder mentions he wrote it and how much Henley winces whenever any interview question addresses the lyrics. If he had his way, they’d never perform it again.

With DM, their catalogue is so broad I am inclined to agree, but ‘Never Let Me Down Again’, ‘I Feel You’ and ‘Barrel Of A Gun’ are all honorable mentions. But my favorite DM tune is the hardly known ‘Little 15’.

I'm surprised that nobody mentioned the two very obvious tunes:
Queen - We Are The Champions
Deep Purple - Smoke On The Water

I would also add:

Whitesnake - Here I Go Again
Scorpions - Rock You Like A Hurricane
Meat Loaf - Paradise By The Dashboard Light

From eastern Europe:

Omega - Gyongyhaju Lany (Scorpions fans know what I'm talking about)

Queen have too many signature songs to be tied down to one, and it you were going to pick one it has to be Bohemian Rhapsody.

Meat Loaf can’t be anything other than Bat Out of Hell.

It made his career and I'm sure he's still getting royalties from that. I doubt he's ashamed of it.

Queen have songwriting credit for that song, but Bowie doesn't, strange.

Did Bowie help in writing it, or did he just sing on the original?

Also, FWIW, Rob Van Winkle claims his melody has an extra note over "Under Pressure." Probably bullshit, but there's so many examples of rappers sampling music from other songs and making hits, it's not worth litigating. Goes all the way back to Sugerhill Gang taking the music for "Apache" (which was later used by Sir Mix A Lot for "Jump On It").

A few choice others:

Siouxsie and the Banshees - Spellbound
The Allman Brothers Band - Whipping Post
The Clash - Should I Stay or Should I Go
Talking Heads - Life In Wartime
Sweet - Ballroom Blitz
Jackson Browne - Running On Empty

For The Clash, I'd have to go with London Calling instead. But that's just me

Bohemian Rhapsody would be my favourite as well. However, We Are The Champions is more on air. At least around here.

I am surprised no one has mentioned ABBA. I would think "Take A Chance On Me" is their signature tune.
You bet I'm pumped!!! I just had a green tea!!!

Nope, "Dancing Queen" seems to be the only song of theirs that gets played on the radio.

I think Madonna's early career signature is Holiday as said above. Mid career might be "Like a Prayer."

Dancing Queen vs Take a Chance on Me is a tough one.

Allman Brothers, I saw Dicky Betts' Ramblin Man, but Gregg deserves a signature too, and for him it is probably Midnight Rider

This is a tough game, because sometimes an artist's most popular song is not one that the artist would be pleased to call their signature. In other cases, it would. Midnight Rider, we should all be so lucky to have a signature song like that.

Tom Petty, this is where the game began, and I settled on American Girl when he died. He wrote a lot of autobiographical songs, but American Girl is so catchy, it's his first mega hit, he would close his concerts with it. It was probably his signature.

Every winning song of Eurovision?

We could also start enumerating every boy band on the planet and their "break through" songs...

Well the answers have somewhat strayed from the premise of the thread: ""signature" songs of popular artists"

And essentially that means artists who sustain and persist throughout some period of time. There are tons of "one hit wonders" as you are hinting at. That can be viewed as a different category.

"Popular" with whom.
If it is simply a numbers game, then we better start mentioning Chinese or Indian artists...
An example would be Teresa Teng with "The Moon Represents My Heart".

Oh absolutely! All is fair in love and pedantry and nitpicking!
