The Rio-Antirrio Bridge in Greece

Tue Jun 30, 2020 1:53 am

The Rio-Antirrio Bridge was opened the day before the Athens Summer Olympics in 2004 and the Olympic Torch was carried across the bridge. The bridge has two vehicle travel lines in each direction, an emergency lane, and a pedestrian walkway. Engineering challenges faced with constructing the bridge include deep water, insecure materials for the foundation, seismic activity, probability of tsunamis, and the expansion of the Gulf of Cornith due to seismic activity. It is indeed a very impressive feat of engineering.
