Paper Straws

Fri Jul 03, 2020 4:35 pm

They absolutely ruin the taste of any carbonated drink.

Anyone else agree or disagree?

I never really noticed them altering the taste, however, some of them do go 'mushy' after prolonged use which is a pain. I get the need to eliminate plastic straws from a waste perspective, but in favor of moving towards a 'no straw' world and just re-engineering drink lids to be work without straws and limit spillage (e.g. like coffee lids)

Why on Earth are you drinking a carbonated drink through a straw?

Or anything in general. And they restrict the flow so incredibly bad that you wonder why you even wanted a straw to begin with

But yes paper staws do suck (pun is there but beside the point)! Hate 'em. Some of the gen "bio straws" are really good but whoever thinks using lame versions of paper straws is smart... isn't. Just get the better ones, it's not that hard.

Yep. I have a nice collection of metal and glass straws.

The only thing you should drink from a straw is iced tea because it can stain your teeth. Same with coffee except heating plastic releases toxic chemicals.

That must be why I’ve seen so many people drinking red wine with a straw.

Didn't notice the taste issue, however after each sip I pull on the straw to get it out of the drink, so that it doesn't get mushy.

I can't say I've ever noticed a problem, but then again, I can't recall the last time I used a paper straw. I keep a couple of silicon straws in the car for the rare occasion that I may need a straw. My wife uses stainless straws.

During my last cruise with NCL, their Starbucks store offered paper straws. Sturdy at first, until a few minutes in when they would get soggy. They only had straw lids (the ones with the hole in the center).

Anything hot like freshly brewed coffee doesn't need a straw. Iced coffees and cold brews don't either...just make the lids like those for hot coffees. Frappuccinos and shakes...there are lids with wider openings. Make them a bit more runny.

Not if you empty 16oz in seconds.

I think straw is unnecessary in most instances, kids are losing yet another basic skill of drinking from a cup.

For taste conscious adults Ball Jar is the best. No plastic or paper cup taste.

Will have to rely on Google to tell me what we did before they invented plastic straws.
I guess someone somewhere decided that it is not polite to drink without a straw, so the civilized folks got hooked on straws, strange how a virus brings us down to earth.
Problem with paper straws is that they actually force you to spend more money, can't have one soda getting lukewarm because you take an hour to drink it, now you have to finish it while cold and buy another....bummer. On the alcohol front, all those fancy decorations that get in the way of your mouth forcing you to use a straw will now be a thing of the past...aaahhhhh

Straws allow you to drink without watching what you're doing. Especially in the US with all your drive thru I would have thought that was obvious.

Also for iced beverages, when drinking directly the ice gets in the way.

At least plastic straws are firmly a thing of the past, so get over it. One way or another.

There is a reason, I had a Bell’s palsy which makes drinking without a straw difficult.

This sentence pinpointed why metallic straws are dangerous and unsuitable

Will not really true. There are plenty of places where they are still used. And you are still free to buy your own plastic straws for your own use. Also there are a few degradable plastics out there.

Without a doubt I still prefer the simple plastic straw. I do of course understand the issues they and all "persistent" plastics create.

I don't disagree with any of that but you do kind of touch on a point that I've been wondering about for a while now: I've heard people with clear anti-plastic agendas claim that persistent plastics such as styrofoam, drinking straws, etc. last for tens if not hundreds of years, but I can only assume that's under ideal conditions with zero exposure to the elements because I've watched examples break down into dust/functional nothingness in a matter of months when left exposed to good ol' direct sunlight. I'd guess the ultraviolet rays are the ones mainly responsible for the breakdown but it might be other rays or a combination. Am I the only one who's noticed this inconsistency in breakdown times?
