trump considered selling Puerto Rico: Ex-DHS chief says the president asked ‘can we sell the island?

Only part of this more extensive article...

Leading Homeland Security Under a President Who Embraces ‘Hate-Filled’ Talk
https://www.nytimes.com/2020/07/10/us/p ... trump.html

Well now, is there any question about loyalty to America, ALL of America.

The is the prime example of the mind of a Slave Owner. To own another human to do what you wish is the most wicked, heinous most monstrous act exacted on another human being.

Some can do it without a blink of an eye. Others seduced by easy wealth and/sexual exploitation. Or to create more slaves.

In movies, Star Wars to the Maze Runner, the act itself and it's practitioners are rightfully demonized...

...in reality, most humans oppose it in all forms, in certain areas of extreme decadence it is acceptable.

For the mind spoken by the leader of America in this manner...is instant negation, subjugation and wholesale dismissal these millions of brown Americans.

Apparently it was floated to exchange Greenland for Puerto Rico. I, for one, wouldn't have minded becoming a Danish citizen and being granted EU citizenship as well.

IIRC, Denmark said that Greenland was not for sale, and he got his knickers in a twist.

Besides why would Denmark want Puerto Rico?.

Instead of going that far and say "slave owner" mentality, I would say Trump still think he is running a business, where he can buy and sell assets. The Puerto Ricans? Who cares? Much like how big biz especially those venture capitalist never care about all these employees getting layoff during things like M&A or asset spinoff.

As for who would buy it? With enough money somebody would. China, for example, could buy the island, send the existing people to concentration camp or hard labor, while having a naval base/missile base much closer to US than they can ever dream.

If you could ever think Trump could be any stupider, insane, and head shaking embarrassing, he reaches even lower toward it. Ignorance is not bliss when you are a citizen of this jerk of a President. Indeed is is downright dangerous, scary and sickening.

Friends of mine used to joke that in order to service the US debt, the US will sell PR to China. Of course, having a territory in the Americas is all China needs to begin her quest as a global power. While other countries may ask to impose the "one country, two systems" restriction as a condition of sale, I could see Trump saying "just give us the money and do whatever you want".

Yes Slavery was exactly that - assest, cargo, human chattel.

How on Earth can a reasonable educated human being not see that...unless they are not any if those things.

...and it was indeed a business. Good luck on coming back with 'well trump allow all the Puerto Ricans to come to the mainland if they wish.."
No he wouldn't.

But yeah, watch some Slavery documentaries, you could learn more than what's displayed in your comments.

Two questions:
1. If any other president, Democrat or Republican, would float such an idea, what would the reaction be?
2. For Porte Rico, wouldn't be a good time to have a referendum to succeed from the union? They aren't a state, they aren't taking really serious apparently.
Many happy landings, greetings from The Netherlands!

Note the wording allegedly used here: 'divest' from it.
Clearly 45 sees Puerto Rico as a (bad) investment, much more than a US territory, let alone an integral part of the USofA.
It was already shocking to have a US President offering unsolicitatedly to buy land from a NATO ally, but this is even more eyepopping: a US President genuinely suggesting to sell off part of his country's territory, probably to the highest bidder even?!
What's next? Sell of California to Mexico? It would raise the cash to build his wall and rid the EC of a lot of blue votes?

Does he have the authority to sell Puerto Rico?.

If so, who would be potential buyers?.

Let me refresh everybody's memory, Last year Trump jokingly said he was going to exchange Greenland for Puerto Rico. Denmark who owns Greenland joked back that they would buy Puerto Rico from Trump. I jokingly posted, that Denmark wanted to buy it last year, and my post was removed. I guess i needed to use my sarcastic font.

I seem to recall that Denmark said no to selling Greenland.

He was not happy.

I think you misunderstand my point :).

I am trying to imitate Trump and his cronies when I said "Puerto Rican, who cares!" as my whole point is to argue how Trump is essentially running things as a business where everything is up for sell for the right amount of money, and how Trump won't give a crap about the people living there, much like how he never care about all those contractors he stiffed.

I personally of course know Puerto Ricans are Americans also and as you said, really awesome people full of culture.

Well, if it was said two centuries ago, then it would be relatively normal
2. For Porte Rico, wouldn't be a good time to have a referendum to succeed from the union? They aren't a state, they aren't taking really serious apparently.

Pass referendums showed that they aren't really wanting that

https://www.facebook.com/DonaldTrump/po ... 1245980725

but based on Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen’s comments, that she would have no interest in discussing the purchase of Greenland, I will be postponing our meeting scheduled in two weeks for another time.

Did he think he was buying an office building?.

Would he sell part of the US?.

incidentally, given that Greenland is an autonomous territory, what would have been the reaction in Greenland if the Danish govt had agreed to discuss this notion

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Greenland

Political system
The party system is dominated by the social-democratic Forward Party, and the democratic socialist Inuit Community Party, both of which broadly argue for greater independence from Denmark. While the 2009 election saw the unionist Democrat Party (two MPs) decline greatly, the 2013 election consolidated the power of the two main parties at the expense of the smaller groups, and saw the eco-socialist Inuit Party elected to the Parliament for the first time. The dominance of the Forward and Inuit Community parties began to wane after the snap 2014 and 2018 elections.

The non-binding 2008 referendum on self-governance favoured increased self-governance by 21,355 votes to 6,663.

In 1985, Greenland left the European Economic Community (EEC), unlike Denmark, which remains a member. The EEC later became the European Union (EU, renamed and expanded in scope in 1992). Greenland retains some ties with the EU via Denmark. However, EU law largely does not apply to Greenland except in the area of trade.

This tends to suggest that the result would have been uproar.

The other possibility is that he wanted to cancel the meeting and this notion was floated to give him an excuse to do so.

Imagine what that would have done to the Hans Island dispute between Canada and Denmark?

But, it looks like they dealt with the dispute with more diplomatic means than leaving bottles of liquor......
