A great example that in comedy it takes smart people to do "stupid" well. Total classic.

Striker, listen, and you listen close: flying a plane is no different than riding a bicycle, just a lot harder to put baseball cards in the spokes.

You know, most of the humor in Airplane! is pretty timeless, but the disco jokes are one of the few things that really dates that movie. That and the fact that they're flying a 707.

It has been on Netflix since at least Monday night, because I watched the movie again that night on Netflix.

Underrated moment: the coffee kids scene (where they pretend they're adults), the face the boy gives in reaction to what the girl says (I won't spoil it if you haven't seen it) - that face belongs in the hall of fame of faces. He just nails it, and should have gotten a Best Supporting Actor Oscar just for that face alone.

Not to be pedantic, but George Zipp wasn't the one who thought he was Ethel Merman, it was Lt Horowitz. George Zipp was Stryker's best friend who died in the raid over Macho Grande.

It was at that moment that I first realized Elaine had doubts about our relationship. And that, as much as anything else, led to my drinking problem.

"What was it we had for dinner tonight?
"Well, we had a choice. Steak or fish."
"Yes, yes I remember, I had lasagna."
----
"All right. Now we know what we're up against. Every passenger who had fish for dinner will become violently ill in the next half hour."
"Just how serious is it, doctor?"
"Extremely serious. It starts with a slight fever and dryness of the throat. As the virus penetrates the red blood cells the victim becomes dizzy, begins to experience an itchy rash. From there the poison goes to work on the central nervous system causing severe muscle spasms, followed by the inevitable drooling. At this point the entire digestive system collapses, accompanied by uncontrollable flatulence, until finally the poor bastard is reduced to a quivering wasted piece of jelly."

Nowwwww I understand that reference! So glad you mentioned that, just looked at the commercial.

There are various references in the movie which are very US centric and of their time. I wasn't around in the 1970s (and nor am I American), so things like that I never understood. Also, the guy in the taxi at the beginning and end? Who is he and what's going on there?
