Rainforest Cafe in Chicago Permnantely Closed

Thu Aug 13, 2020 8:38 pm

The Rainforest Cafe in Chicago has permnantely closed a year ahead of schedule and comes after 23 years in operation. The place has been popular with diners with small children and tourists, but closed in the spring when Chicago went on lockdown. One of the gorillas will remain as part of the new development taking over the restaurant. Sad to see such a popular restaurant close for good.

If the food were actually decent it may have had a better chance.

This. It's basically all frozen food being pedaled for high prices in a themed environment. I just pulled up the menu for one that's (relatively) nearby - $17.99 for a cheeseburger is insane. Heck...$16.99 for a plain Caesar salad...I'll pass.

I had no idea there were any still open. There was one on Long Island we used to go to, but it closed 20 years ago.

Couldn't it be saved as a museum?

When the Rainforest Café first opened, it was a neat concept and neat restaurant. I'll admit it. I'm pretty sure it came in to Schaumburg first before opening the downtown location. Of course like all good restaurant concepts, the original backers cashed out and ran and sold it off to Landry's a few years after opening at the Mall of America in 1994.

Landry's wasted no time in coming in and doing their thing and Landry-sizing it, going full ahead on increasing the cheapness in the quality of and preparation of food, diminishing the fun as much as possible and hiking prices because it's just the Rainforest Café.

My friend's mom invested a bunch of her money in Rainforest Cafe stock in the early 90s. I guess maybe Apple stock would have been better.

Or, according to stlgph, it changed hands years ago. I remember it going bankrupt back in the day too.

Yes sir, Landry's bought it in 2000. The menu is now very similar to that of Landry's Seafood Restaurants with some other items stolen from other properties they own or owned or had investments in such as Joe's Crab Shack, Houlihan's and others.

Only after a few posters said something about the menu of Rainforest Cafe that I decided to look at one.

Seriously, their food is way overpriced, especially for the quality I remember it for (mind you that this is 10+ years ago). At best the quality is as good as the like of Applebee's or TGI Friday's, except, well, the price is 50% higher (i.e. 11-12 for a burger at the former vs 18 for the latter). Oh, and their menu is really meh.
