CA Wine Country On Fire Again

Tue Sep 29, 2020 1:02 pm

A terrible turn of events this weekend as a small fire has taken advantage of low humidity and offshore winds and gone haywire the last two nights. Several resorts and historic wineries have already been destroyed, along with hundreds of homes. It's going to be a long next two months around California, as if this summer wasn't bad enough.

One day the fires will disappear, just like that. You'll see, the hills will be alive with the sound of music. And burning homes don't really impact anyone. Do you know anyone in a burning home? I don't, all I see is a chimney and maybe a washing machine. No people, no impact!

I'm gonna live like Trump from now until he's gone from office, just to see what it's like to be inside his clown mask. If I'm being honest it feels kind of refreshing, like there are no real problems in this world except shaving another stroke off my handicap.

That's not the point - people are actively denying scientific consensus while this shit's getting worse annually. The fact that the WH is helping is like adding unwanted gasoline.

In this study, we quantify observed changes in the occurrence and magnitude of meteorological factors that enable extreme autumn wildfires in California, and use climate model simulations to ascertain whether these changes are attributable to human-caused climate change. We show that state-wide increases in autumn temperature (~1 °C) and decreases in autumn precipitation (~30%) over the past four decades have contributed to increases in aggregate fire weather indices (+20%). As a result, the observed frequency of autumn days with extreme (95th percentile) fire weather—which we show are preferentially associated with extreme autumn wildfires—has more than doubled in California since the early 1980s. We further find an increase in the climate model-estimated probability of these extreme autumn conditions since ~1950, including a long-term trend toward increased same-season co-occurrence of extreme fire weather conditions in northern and southern California. Our climate model analyses suggest that continued climate change will further amplify the number of days with extreme fire weather by the end of this century

I understand every little bit helps but what happens when we in the US are all driving battery powered cars and using 2 rocks and a stick to start a fire while India and China are belching massive clouds of toxic whatever all day every day not to mention all the rich liberals in the US climbing on the green bandwagon meanwhile in the background driving their hummers and flying their private jets. Like I also said one volcanic eruption will undo everything we could do in a lifetime of going green. Have to have a balance you are not going to eliminate all oil and all carbon emissions. Not in our lifetimes for sure.

You might look at more interesting climate functions than the climate change meme. The PDO occurs and has occurred for centuries and correlates better. Lack of forest management and building near forests better explain the fire season disasters better.

Better to be leading the globe toward human progress than backward steps into a deeper shitbucket.

I'm with the guy playing with toy airplanes. Forest management is the only explanation for the melting polar ice caps. We need to get those penguins some friggin rakes!

No let's reelect the governor that drivers around in a flotilla of Chevy Suburbans while his state burns and he blames everyone else.

Security procedures are the same for most leaders regardless of environmental policies.

Anyway, the fire tripled in size the last couple days, and is still at zero containment. Humidity is increasing though and winds have shifted to onshore flow, so there may be relief coming soon.

And the smoke is coming at the Pacific Northwest now. Sun was about as bright as the moon, and a pretty orange. So far only in the upper atmosphere, but some is likely to settle downward.

Pretty hazy in the Seattle area right now - the sun is barely casting shadows and it's an orange glow on buildings and the ground. I think I am on Mars. But the weather guys say it shouldn't be as bad as a couple weeks ago since the smoke is coming all the way from CA instead of next door in OR. Hope they're correct
