Why Many Cities Prohibit Large Trucks From Parking on Residential Streets for no Reason

Tue Oct 06, 2020 3:33 am

Why do many cities prohibit large trucks from parking on residential streets for no valid reason, when cars do not have such restrictions? Are there any differences that cause these regulations to be put in place?

The answer, quite honestly might be that voters do not want large trucks to be allowed to park in front of their residence or business. Most cities have ordinances about vehicle parking.

If is it is "for no reason", there cannot, by definition, be a "Why?"

As for this matter, trucks block access and take up multiple spaces when parked on streets. This rises to the level of being a Public Nuisance, and a safety hazard. If you do not have an item or need who's value supersedes these problems —and you would never in this case— the town in is within its rights to do what it needs to prevent that happening.

Perfectly valid reason is that I like to park my car near my residence, instead of having to navigate through idling or parked trucks all around the city.

Might as well be asking why people aren't allowed to park in front of loading docks

Exactly. Damage limitation.

Suburban roads are not built to handle the weight of trucks, here most residential areas have a 5 ton weight limit and the largest vehicle you see in the suburbs is the dustbin truck.

Many towns in my area of NJ ban overnight parking of trucks or any vehicle of 6000 Pounds GWV (~3000 Kg) and up in residential and even in some commercial areas mainly for 'quality of life' reasons, especially overnight (like 12M - 6 AM) to keep out camper vans, motor homes and trucks with sleeper cabs from parking overnight, with engines or generators running.

Another reason is that parking/storage of trucks is a cost for any business. If allowed there would be many that would save the cost of owning/leasing a storage lot and instead park their trucks on the streets. This would lead to ever more companies doing the same which would be detrimental to the community.

One reason may be EMS access...firetrucks need space, especially to turn around. You should ask your police department why.

On many smaller streets, there is simply not enough room to park a big rig with a trailer. That would be over 65 feet long. Also, they are very wide. Wider than a fill size pick up or RV. And some side streets are not built for large and heavy vehicles like semis. They need a lot of room to turn, so getting through to the other side would present quite a challenge, too.

Also many trucks haul hazardous materials which presents a whole new danger.

Commercial trucks don't belong on residential streets unless they are making a delivery. My property taxes need to be paid and I don't want my hood to look like an industrial park go park where you belong.

A place where I sometimes eat is on a national road and truck drivers park on the side of that road (totally illegally and dangerously) on top of everywhere on the back road of the restaurant, it's a nightmare navigating this mess.
