So let’s measure how far we stand a part. The political compass

Mon Oct 12, 2020 10:40 pm

So this is an oldie, but goldie conversation starter.
It’s been online for nearly 20 years.
It measures where you stand politically on a 2-axis left/right and liberal/authoritarian graphic in a few simple questions.

Probably not up to the highest scientific polling-standards,
But a whole lot of fun, and might quantifie just a little
Bit about where we stand in general. It is not country specific, and everyone can take it on all platforms.

https://www.politicalcompass.org/

Personally I end up on a
-7.13 left
-6.4 libertarian

That is substansially further left/liberal than when I last took it a few years back, which surprises me.
Compared to most people I know, and my country’s politics I would be considered very much a centrist.
Slight left, but centrist.

So where do you all stand?

Right wing authoritarian, but I just clicked anything. If they are tracking this stuff, all the better to give them nonsense information.

That test isn't as good as others of it's kind I think the last time we did this I was almost center or just right of it.

Kinda harsh, but I'm sure they get plenty like that.

Ok, thank you.
No one claims scientific accuracy, but it is fun to see things laid out in 2 dimensions.
This measure is the «original», it is rather old, and decisively not partisan about this year’s US-election.

That makes it relevant, I think.

A good place to start a constructive conversation.

Some of these questions are incredibly concerning. Like women should stay in the home and be homemakers? Wtf it's 2020, more women graduate college than men. Also, there's too few questions for this to mean much. Anyway. Have an abortion, fuck who you want to, gov should regulate companies but not individuals.

Econ Left -4.0
Social Libertarian -7.28

Definitely some silly questions in there, but more or less accurate result - somewhat 'centrist' by US standards, with a more leftist lean economically.

Economic: -4.15
Social: -2.62

I like those political alignment tests, I think they're way more interesting to take than all those "which type of personality are you" tests. Of course the two dimensions of the political compass are somewhat over-simplifying, but nonetheless a good way to get a first impression.

I think the 8values test is more reflective of one's political orientation than the political compass.
But anyway, my political compass test result is
Economic Left/Right: 6.25
Social Libertarian/Authoritarian: -4.77

Basically I think commerce is extremely crucial to society, but it does NOT mean I support monopolies, excessive pollution or multi-national tax dodging.

Do I want to live in a world without commerce, hell no. Every stitch of clothing I have, every bit of food I ate today came from commerce. Business is about people being employed to serve customers. Both the employment and the service provided are good things. The return to shareholder is also good. None of that is bad.

About social things, I do not think the government should police what people do in their bedroom, but it should actively police violent crime and pollution laws, and anti-trust laws.

I got -3.75 on the economic and -4.05 on the social, so definitely in the lower left.

Almost right in the middle

Economic Left/Right: 0.38
Social Libertarian/Authoritarian: -0.82

but the test is too US-centric to have wider relevance.
