CNN commentator thinks it likely that 3 states will have a recount and that would take several days. The fat lady has not even got on stage to sing or so it seems.

Question for those in the know on the US constitution: Is the day the electoral college votes set in stone or would any outstanding legal challenges to the results returned by the states delay the EC vote?

Recounts are routine.

Actual changes to the outcome are such extreme exceptions, though, that the preliminary result is practically certain to remain standing, and the current state of the counts plus the direction and size of the momentum don't leave much room for doubting the outcome any more.

Besides, Biden's lead in PA is already on track to grow beyond the automatic recount margin, so a recount requested by Trump would be at his own cost if it was granted at all, and PA alone hands victory to Biden.

Trump would have to beat Biden's progressively growing lead in PA to have any chance at all, and then he would need to also beat back Biden's leads in at least two of the other three decisive states at the same time.

Assuming that seriously strains any kind of plausibility, and even more so with each chunk of results adding to Biden's leads in three of the four crucial states, notably including Pennsylvania.

And even Biden's Arizona lead is not shrinking fast enough for Trump to overcome it before the count is done.

That goose is cooked, and the only question is how much dignity Trump will be able to salvage from this wreckage.

In close elections I don't find particular odd for it to take days to finalise the result. We had a state election (Queensland, Australia) 31 October. Even a week later there are still three close seats that haven't been determined, although it this case it won't change the outcome as Labor already has its majority. This is a much smaller jurisdiction with 3.2 million electors.

Cerification dates are written in state law, for WI and MI its November 23rd. All states have, no surprise, set those limits before the EC vote.
Since the constitution puts responsibility for elections onto states, this is pretty clear cut. Hence the USSC ruling in 2000 explicitly stating it doesn't set a precedent, as the circumstances where unique and not regulated in state law.

Federal law, not the constitution, sets the dates of the EC ballots.

The 12th and 20th Amendments changed the procedure from every elector submitting two ballots for President (the original) to every elector submitting one ballot for President and one ballot for Vice President. The 20th Amendment changed the date of the inauguration of a each Presidential term from March to January.

https://www.archives.gov/founding-docs/constitution-transcript

In 2020 - Dec 8 - is the safe harbor date - states which certify their electors by this date - those electors will be given greater protection from challenges from Congress - this is a result of the Bush v Gore challenge to the 2000 election and the US Supreme Court decision

Dec 14 will be the date the Elector meet and vote in each state

https://www.aei.org/politics-and-public-opinion/key-dates-for-the-electoral-college-and-what-they-mean/

This an overview of the process

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Electoral_Count_Act

The people who framed and wrote the original Constitution tried to prevent such details from becoming set in stone so to speak, realizing that some things would change as the country continued to exist, to possibly add new states and hopefully add more people.

Here is the official US Archives website on the Electoral College - the folks that handle the details and paperwork - https://www.archives.gov/electoral-college

If the margin are <1000, then yes, a recount may change the result.

But 10k? I have a higher chance of winning the lottery than a recount changing the result.

Oh well, more F5 and scrolling my phone screen up for another day otherwise.

LMAO, some top notch trolling going on.

https://www.theguardian.com/us-news/liv ... 74eae13b6a

It’s unclear why the Trump campaign is holding a press conference at Four Seasons Total Landscaping in Philadelphia today, as the president announced this morning.

A Washington Post reporter could not reach anyone at the company for comment, but she did note that the Internet has started doing what it does best: trolling through online reviews.

https://www.google.com/search?q=Four%20 ... 65a3be,1,,,

And it is NOT the Four seasons hotel in PHL. https://twitter.com/FSPhiladelphia/stat ... 4964109312

To clarify, President Trump’s press conference will NOT be held at Four Seasons Hotel Philadelphia.
It will be held at Four Seasons Total Landscaping— no relation with the hotel.

Four Seasons Total Landscaping is apparently located next to an adult book store:

CNN has now officially called the presidency to Joe Biden. https://edition.cnn.com/politics/live-n ... 3e6d9008d2

CNN PROJECTION: JOE BIDEN WINS THE PRESIDENCY

Joe Biden will become the 46th president of the United States, CNN projects, after a victory in the state where he was born put him over the 270 electoral votes needed to win.

With Pennsylvania's 20 electoral votes, Biden now has a total of 273 electoral votes.

Before becoming the Democratic presidential nominee, Biden served as vice president under former President Barack Obama. He is also Delaware's longest-serving senator.

Throughout his campaign, Biden has argued that the "soul of the nation" is at stake, and has promised that he would seek to heal a country fractured by Trump's presidency.

Joe Biden has won the presidency by clinching Pennsylvania and its 20 electoral votes, the AP has just announced.

Biden’s electoral vote count now stands at 284, surpassing the 270 needed to win the White House.

Multiple news, i.e. CNN, NBC, and ABC has call the election for Biden.

Nothing is official yet of course, but it is game over for Trump more or less.

Moscow Mitch can go back to his "Making Biden a one-term president" goal.

EDIT: With that, we can also welcome the first "unofficial" Female President of US, Kamala Harris.

With the newest results coming from Pennsylvania, Biden appears to be out of automatic recall range. CNN, AP, and BBC calling it. None of them appear to include AZ, GA, NC, or NV.

For anyone in doubt, Trump proving right now that he should have never been allowed in the GOP primary, never been elected, and never been allowed to stay in power that long. An indelible mark on those who let that happen or encouraged it.

While this is a relief, for the entire world, and all of humanity, it will take a long time to come to terms with the fact that anyone, even one single person voted for Trump. Even in the 2016 primaries.
Much of the aparatus that let this happen will continue to exist, and it will be very hard for USA to get the reform, overhaul and restructuring it so badly needs. Although certain disaster is avoided for the time being, things need to happen if the US is going to stay a stable democracy, because the fundemental problem of inequality and religion dominating over science remains. Crossing my fingers! Congrats to the US!

Hope this is a turning point, not only for the USA but for the entire West. You note issues specific for the USA and some don't exist elsewhere, but there are "Trumpian" figures in many Western countries and most are doing very well in elections. This causes countries to be divided internally, and the whole West to be divided.
Is Biden the person who can break this vicious circle?
Time will tell, but at least there is hope again.

AOC tweeted out yesterday calling for a list of Republicans who didn't submit over the years, has anyone called for a list of his supporters too? I think Will and Grace did a year or so ago or called for something similiar, but I don't think it materialized.

I agree it’s unlikely. His literal fortune has always been inseparable from his brand. And his brand is now inextricably right wing blowhard. If he turns Way from that he’s done. We’re going to be seeing him on cable talk shows until he either deteriorated mentally/physically or is incarcerated (I am not predicting this, just detailing scenarios) because that’s how he’s going to attract the money to his properties.

The fun part is that Kamala Harris should become the 47th president around 2022...

Joe Biden really connected with People. Now we can move forward. Take care of Business. take care of the sick, and for us all to heal. Those who voted for Trump, take your time to grieve and move on. If that means leaving the U.S. so be it. You weren't a real American.

Sounds like you really admire the man or something

Well he accomplished more in 4 years than Biden did in 47. That is for sure.

True ! He managed to deeply divide the country, fueled hatred and increased racism, he told an incredible number of lies, he was an embarassement during 4 years, was an international laughingstock, turned his back to his allies and got closer to dictators, triggered a commercial war. Nobody else could have done that, you're right.

Why 47 ??

Connected? Only in creepy feel you way. :rotfl:

As for the rest of your statement it really doesn't deserve a response. Though making the whole country California is a wet dream of many.
