Some probably had underlying conditions. There have been reports of some people with certain types of cancer dying shortly after the vaccine because the vaccine reactivates aspects of the cancer which had gone into remission. I know some people with leukemia have died because they have seen a reactivating of their hemolytic anemia after the vaccine. This is definitely something anyone with these conditions should research beforehand

Similar happens in Norway I read.

I think it is important to realize that right now the weakest getting the jabs. That means that even a small overreaction can be fatal.

In my view this is the reason that in normal times, normally healthy people need to be vaccinated because there is weak people that perhaps cannot be vaccinated. We have responsibility for each other.

I got my first dose yesterday of Pfizer, I was surprised to wake up with zero side effects today, not even a sore arm. I have 8 family members that have gotten one of the 2 drugs, it’s interesting that reactions are all over the place, but overall the trend we’ve see is older you are, the more you feel it.

My sister had the strongest reaction out of 692 people vaccinated with Pfizer. Bad chills for 2 hours (in the middle of the night), fatigue the next day. After second dose, a sore arm and maybe fatigue (more likely psychological, she had a patient die on her that bothered her. Nothing she could do, this patient had been doing ok, and the Covid19 finished the individual off when he should have gotten better).

Yes.
If you read the statistics thus far, the vaccine is deadlier than the virus on a per case basis.

But then you need to take in to account that these were the frailest of the frail, people literally already dying.
There where put no "upper" cut-off in place for who gets the vaccine.
The recommandations is now changed to only give it to people with more than 4 weeks of life expectancy to begin with, and by doing this alone, they don't anticipate any more deaths from vaccine side-effects.

We do have a responsibility. Before my children were born my MMR and DTaP were updated to protect my unborn children. This was also because I was visiting my grandmother in a nursing home and I wanted to be extra safe. They required a flu vaccine to eat in the cafeteria with the residents.

I modeled the disease and it spreads so slow that until 50% are vaccinated, the vaccinated were still getting sick (5% sick assumed, plus 5% asymptomatic transmitters, again assumed). For non vaccinated, 20% asymptomatic transmission (all the healthy people at work seem to be this, they need a test to know they are sick).

But more than 50% vaccinated, the fraction of the vaccinated who became sick fell quickly. There was no change in the unvaccinated until 70% and then at 75% Vaccinated, things improved quickly.

Now how I randomly assigned probability of vaccinated vs. non-vaccinated might have created clumps. But at 50% vaccinated, those in the interior of vaccinated pockets started avoiding exposure (as would a tiny number of unvaccinated). But the disease would spread along streaks of unvaccinated until there were enough vaccinated the model broke up into pockets. You didn't want to be unvaccinated in the last hot zones...

How are the vaccine passports going to work for international travel?

Would every country recognize every vaccine in the world as a valid one or come up with their own list of approved vaccines?

Well, vaccines, as I understand it, are certified by the WHO, and the WHO certificates are valid all over the world. This organization has competence all over the world. Therefore, it seems to me that the vaccination mark should be recognized in all countries.

Well, lets be realistic, most COVID-19 vaccines are given under EUA, not even with full and final approval from local regulator let alone WHO certification.

Some are given out to even without third phase trails or peer reviews.

The efficacy claims and counter claims range between 50% to 100%.

There is no authority that supersedes a sovereign nation's right to make that determination for itself. Hypothetically if, say, Canada decides that the only vaccine that they will accept as valid is the CanSino candidate and that they will bar entry to all foreign nationals who haven't had it, then that is Canada's prerogative and nobody else can force them to accept any other vaccine. Of course, such a decision would be heavily detrimental to Canada, especially if the CanSino candidate is unavailable or unapproved in other countries. So most countries, I suspect, will accept a number of different vaccines as valid, but some countries may choose to specifically exclude certain products that do not meet their own criteria for satisfactory evidence of efficacy.

The WHO, in this case, has no "authority," per se. They cannot force Canada to accept the Moderna vaccine if Canada does not want to accept it (I'm pretty sure Canada will accept it). But what the WHO can do is come up with a centralized list of products that are generally recognized as sufficiently effective based on their own review of the data and then other nations can choose whether to accept the WHO's list or make their own modifications to it. Consider that some small and resource-poor nations might not have the resources to set up a panel of experts to make all these decisions for themselves, so they will simply adopt a policy of accepting the WHO list.

Where national authority over which vaccines to recognize comes into play is with naturalization. My wife as a citizen of Ukraine had to retake a whole bunch of childhood vaccines before submitting her application to become a permanent resident alien. I'm sure she got all the Soviet era equivalents to of the vaccines on the CDC and FDA list, but they want documentation of one dose of the US preferred brands. The State Department requires getting a physical from a list of approved physicians and documentation of taking the specific brands of vaccines recommended by the CDC. About the only vaccine she didn't have to take was the Varicella vaccine, because she had had Chickenpox as a child.

Well, any immigration, really, even just a brief visit. We would not want someone who was carrying a dangerous and communicable disease to enter our country, nor would any country.

COVID-19 Vaccine Passport is not as simple as Yellow Fever vaccine card or mandatory vaccinations for Immigration. There are SOPs for those.

Authorities and media are just throwing around buzz words without thinking how it can be implemented.

If US doesn't recognize SinoVac, SinoPharm or Sputnik V, having a vaccine passport means nothing, would airlines allow pax to board or deny boarding, would the entry be denied into US. This becomes a CBP issue.

What, in 2026? Is it really possible to outrun this thing at the rate it's mutating? How long will it take to update the mRNA vaccines realistically?

Odds are the vaccines will carry a strong degree of partial protection from the variants and anitbodies and T-cells will pick up the variant forms of Covid.

CNN and other media organizations need to STFU until this is medically confirmed that this is the case. The media fear machine to drive clicks is scaring the crap out of people where manty people think that Covid is actually an extinction level event. The more they do this is the more people will start saying f*ck it, I'm going to die anyways so lets live life now. This is hardly the truth and we will learn to deal with and live with this virus.

You slow mutations by reducing replication of the virus. The more it replicates the more chance there is of mutations and if vaccinations slow that down then the mutations will slow.

Adding to that we had an approved mRNA vaccine in less than a year. I will bet any degree of money that Pfizer, Moderna, AstraZenica etc are looking at booster vaccines that have mRNA or viral vectors for the variants ready to go if it comes out that they are bypassing the vaccines. These could be ready to go by fall if they keep the same timeline as the first vaccines which took about 9 months.

Have trials progressed in testing vaccines on children and babies? I think that the Pfizer stage 3 trial was only included people aged 16+ and that the AstraZeneca stage 3 trial only included people 18+ in age,

In some of the poorer countries more than 30% of the population is less than 20 years old. I understand that herd immunity is gained when 70%+ of the population is immune.

If vaccines have not been trialled in the under 16 age group, we have a problem , don't we?

You don't need full sequestration of second doses. That's clearly excessive.

It's also not optimal to have multiple layers of decisions constraining each individual service point.

In the USA, California is doing the least efficient job... maybe North Dakota and West Virginia are "compromising complete innoculation." Or, I suspect they are making an informed gamble, exactly as the NYT wrote last night in their proposal. As Trump's surgeon general said, the second dose vaccine reserves need to be put into people's arms. Those reserves can be replaced as a continuous flow.

People first called the second dose release a lie (particularly WashPo). Then, they called it too risky. Last night, the NYT acted like it was their own smart plan to release the second doses. Which is what North Dakota and West Virginia have done all along.

Meanwhile, California blames its own poor performance on "lack of a comprehensive federal plan." No... their problem is too many California officials were involved.

I suppose the biggest tell-tale sign that we have a real problem on our hands would be mass reinfection among recovered COVID patients, so yes just wait and see at this point given how layered immune response can be.

Also remember immunity isn't a black and white thing. Cross protection is very likely and it's not like the variants are suddenly brand new viruses completely different from the initial Covid. They share a lot of traits with the original.

Personally, I'm not particularly worried about mild illness if there is a re-infection. I am worried if people who have been vaccinated or have recovered are getting seriously sick and are overwhelming hospitals again after being exposed. If the vaccine and natural exposure stops a high percentage of severe cases (100% isn't realistic) the Pandemic is over because the healthcare system can handle the severe cases.

More than likely this virus will become endemic causing a mild illness in basically everyone.

A very good take on what is going on now.

In some of the poorer countries more than 30% of the population is less than 20 years old. I understand that herd immunity is gained when 70%+ of the population is immune.

If vaccines have not been trialled in the under 16 age group, we have a problem , don't we?

I know Bahrain gave Sinopharm to everyone including children even before China approved the vaccine. China is vaccinating under 16.

Both Moderna and Pfizer are running trials on 12-15 year olds now.

This is to be expected, hence the title of this thread.

By Day 23, which is 2 days after the second shot, there is a 60% drop in hospitalizations among vaccinated people aged 60-plus, Maccabi revealed after monitoring 50,777 patients.

Very encouraging IMO.

This is good news. If this all works out, we should see decreasing cases of hospitalizations and deaths . I think this trend is already starting in the US, but it is unknown if it is the vaccines or the rollbacks of operations in some states.

With 1 million a day getting vaccinated, the vaccinations will overtake the number infected in a week or two, and by March/April, I predict the pandemic deaths will have waned. Enough so that infections among the younger folks may actually tick upwards due to less hospitalizations and deaths.

The next trick will be getting more vaccines out, which should be occurring as the next few companies get approval.

When Airbus first flew the A380, everyone knew it would fly. They knew exactly where on the runway it would lift off. There was no doubt.

And yet, the Airbus employees watching cheered and clapped when the airplane lifted into the sky. Nobody was surprised, and yet, to see everything working as planned was a happy moment.

To me, seeing this vaccine begin to show its true power in Israel under real-world conditions is a moment like watching a new airliner lift off. I had no doubt that it would work, but it's just wonderful to watch it doing so.

It's great to see, agreed. For me the first flight moment was when stage 3 results were announced. Now it's just a matter of ramping up production.

Big difference is that the media never created a perpetual panic that the A380 might not take off, might not stay in the air, or God forbid will crash every now and then.
With vaccines however, we constantly hear about how mutation XYZ will render vaccine ABC worthless, the sky will fall, and we all need to be locked up indefinitely.

Israel is in full lockdown since almost 3 weeks and cases are only starting to stabilize.
With 40% of the population vaccinated and in full lockdown, why are there so many cases everyday?

It is not immediate antibody response by the body.
When I was looking at the Emergency Application for Pfizer Vaccine; I believe that their vaccine was only 40% effective at 14days with single dose and 52% at 21 days.
Then 21 more days to reach their 94% claim after receiving the second dose.

So your 21 day number of 40% population pretty much lines up to start a down turn.
You also have to remember that most of the elderly were already in self quarantine so did not have a massive amount of exposure but still contributed to the highest death rate.

Once you vaccinate from start to achieve 90% then you are talking 6 weeks from first injection.
We have a pretty efficient set up here in our state but they are limited by vaccine availability and have not completed Group 1b. However, Group 1 has expanded massively by groups that keep lobbying to upgrade their status to essential classification. Not sure there is any place holders left in Groups 2,3 & 4 anymore.

Moderna vaccine found to effective against both UK and South African variants, albeit less so against the latter but still producing a response adequate enough to provide protection. Modern is moving forward with developing a booster for that variant specifically.

The vaccine generated a weaker immune response against the South African strain, but the antibodies remained above levels that are expected to be protective against the virus, the company said, adding the findings may suggest "a potential risk of earlier waning of immunity to the new B.1.351 strains."

Meanwhile Merck has abandoned their vaccine candidates due to poor indications in their test data.

There is a lag with an incubation period of 5-10 days. Some people get vaccinated and then get COVID the next day. That's because they were actually exposed 5-7 days before. The vaccine is great, but it's not a time machine.

But Israel is now seeing a 95% efficacy on their two mRNA vaccines if you measure just after the second dose. And of those very few people (about 20) who have caught COVID-19 after their second dose, none have needed to be hospitalized.

EU consider blocking exports to third countries of Vaccine if schedule of delivering is not kept up;

--------------------------

The EU has threatened to block exports of coronavirus vaccines to countries outside the bloc such as Britain , after AstraZeneca was accused of failing to give a satisfactory explanation for a huge shortfall of promised doses to member states.

The pharmaceutical company’s new distribution plans were said to be “unacceptable” after it “surprisingly” informed the European commission on Friday that there would be significant shortfalls on the original schedule.

The EU has been due to receive 100m doses in the first quarter of this year. But it is feared that the bloc will only receive half of that despite making large advance purchases ahead of authorisation of the vaccine by the European medicines agency.

Utterly shameful EU behaviour. What's the point in hoarding vaccines that most member states don't have the infrastructure to deliver?

The first ones used in the UK, was from the US-German company, with the core team being two Turkish born immigrants, (so if Farage is offered it presumably he won't take it).

As so often, we've made a rod for our own back (and usually blamed foreigners), the partly British Astra Zenca vaccine and the always groundbreaking science at Oxford is a breakthrough to be proud of, in particular it's flexibility of storage.
However, (and since this article you may have seen how the recent storms for a time threatened the one Astra Zenca plant), did you know they were once a part of the mighty ICI, until asset-stripping city boys and indifferent governments.

It more has to do with AstraZeneca's failures in ramping up production. They promised to produce 100 million doses for the EU this quarter, and they've slashed that target by half to 50 million doses for the EU, even though AstraZeneca took EU funding for R&D and to get production up and going. The EU is rightfully upset that AstraZeneca has screwed up this badly despite government assistance, and are further enraged by AstraZeneca's poor excuses for why they've floundered.

The other bit is that the EU is in a bit of panic due to the fact that they've under ordered, and had backed a number of vaccine candidates that aren't panning out. Some countries, such as Canada had purchased far more vaccines per capita, AND have a much more diversified vaccine portfolio. Thus, they can accept disruptions to the delivery schedule a bit better, and accept that certain candidates may not pan out.

Interview with Pascal Soirot (AZ CEO) in laRepubblica which dispels a few myths circulating on some of the threads here:

https://www.repubblica.it/cronaca/2021/ ... 284349628/

Key points:
- The UK signed a contract with AZ 3 months before the EU. This allowed the production process at the UK plant to start earlier and ramping-up glitches to be resolved sooner.
- There have been production issues of varying degree at all the plants around the world.
- The contract with the EU does not have hard delivery dates: it is "best efforts".
- The AZ vaccine is being supplied on a non-profit basis throughout the whole world. It is an explicit condition in the the contract with Oxford University. It is not the case that production is being diverted to countries paying higher prices.

Vaccine BAN: Germany to stop giving AstraZeneca jab to over-65s in bombshell move
GERMANY has effectively banned adults aged over 65 from receiving the AstraZeneca covid vaccine, as the government instructs medics not to administer the jab to this age group.
