Two opinion pieces about Trump, the election and why this should be designated as the coup it is rather then just a protest/riot.
The first article is written by Fiona Hill who has served as a presidential advisor to George W Bush, Barrack Obama and Donald Trump.
She explain why it's important to designated this as a coup rather then chicken out and just call it a protest.
Since last Wednesday, people have been arguing what to call what happened at the U.S. Capitol — was it a riot? An uprising? An insurrection? I’ve been public in calling it a coup, but others disagree. Some have said it’s not a coup because the U.S. military and other armed groups weren’t involved, and some because Donald Trump didn’t invoke his presidential powers in support of the mob that broke into the Capitol. Others point out that no one has claimed or proved there was a secret plan directed by the president, and that Trump’s efforts to overturn the outcome of the 2020 presidential election could never have succeeded in the first place.
These observations are based on the idea that a coup is a sudden, violent seizure of power involving clandestine plots and military takeovers. By contrast, Trump’s goal was to keep himself in power, and his actions were taken over a period of months and in slow motion.
Chuck Todd, Mark Murray, Carrie Dann and Melissa Holzberg at NBC writes about the root cause about the coupe, Republicans voting against certifying the results,
Trump's lies about the stolen election and so on.........

WASHINGTON — The president begging Georgia’s secretary of state to overturn the election results … More than 140 House and Senate Republicans objecting to the Electoral College count … Trump addressing supporters in Washington (“You will have an illegitimate president … And we can't let that happen.”) … Many of those supporters later storming the Capitol … Trump saying that he won’t attend the inauguration (and getting banned from Twitter) … The drafting of articles of impeachment … And now authorities warning of more armed protests.
All of these events have taken place in just the last 10 days.
And of all them have a simple root cause — the president of the United States refusing to concede an election he clearly lost. (Yes, he acknowledged there would be
a new administration and a transition of power, but that’s as far as he’s gone.)
