Chad president Idriss Déby killed in action

Tue Apr 20, 2021 5:45 pm

Chad's President Idriss Deby, who ruled his country for more than 30 years and was an important Western ally in the fight against Islamist militants in Africa, has been killed on the frontline against rebels in the north.

When is the last time a country's leader died like this ?

Gaddafi wasn't in control of his country (and not really killed in battle).

Numerous heads of states have been assassinated, not really the same.

Why does this just seem like a military cover-up for a coup to me?

I only know of two Gustav II Adolf at Lützen 6th November 1632 and Karl XII at Fredrikstens fortress 30th November 1718..

His son, who happens to be a 4 star general is now in charge of the ruling council. Doesn't sound like much of a military coup

I guess if there is a conspiracy it's from the president himself, preferring such death to some kind of illness. But there is a real rebel offensive and he was known to take things in hand for the previous ones so I doubt it.

Italo Balbo, Governor-General of Italian Libya, his aircraft was shot down over Tobruk by a cruiser in a friendly fire incident in 1940.

Francisco Solano López, President of Paraguay, died at the end of the war of the triple alliance in 1870. Attacked the opposing general with his sword.

Gotta love medias like CNN focus on the part about "security anchor" despite the fact that Déby is just another brutal African dictator.

It is definitely not everyday you see a president going to frontline, though. Live by the sword, die by the sword I guess.

A 37 year old? 4 star general that saw first battles in 2006?

The Chadian army has announced a four-star general Mahamat Kaka, son of Chad’s long-time President Idriss Déby as the country’s leader, and the dissolution of the government and parliament.

The military has also announced that elections will be held in 18 months’ time.

Experts however say the move is unconstitutional, and that the speaker of parliament should take over when a sitting president dies before organising elections.

This has all the makings of a coup.

This one was our dictator, doing helpful things in the region. A democracy would be better, but a radical muslim dictator would be worse.
