Hey all. I normally don't start topics here but I wanted to see what the general community of Airliners.net thinks of this absolutely bizarre incident.

I would describe it myself but I feel like I wouldn't be able to do it justice. I can say for sure this man should have been dead but he somehow pulled through. .50 Cal rifles are scary, and despite me being a pretty big gun nut, I would be intimidated from firing a single shot 50BMG rifle.
For those that really don't want to watch the video, basically this guy loaded a SLAP round into an RM-50, didn't know it was hot (he had pondered if it was tampered with), fired it, and it exploded in the gun. The RN-50 has a cap that you screw onto the back of the gun when you load a round, that you screw in via threaded bolt. It also has two latches that prevent the gun from closing in case you didn't screw it in all the way. Since the SLAP exploded in the chamber, it completely sheared off the thread on the bolt, also sheared off the two latches that prevent the gun from closing, right back into his face. One of the latches missed him but another hit him in his neck and the steel cap slammed him in his eye.

The general consensus on the gun forum that I belong to is that the gun is a poorly designed POS.

I have seen this discussed too. Is the even further consensus that the gun sucks because it has no failsafe, or should it explode, explodes in a way that does the least damage/directs shrapnel away from the shooter?

It's got a screw in breech plug. That there is very unusual. A bolt action is much stronger (and more expensive). Several people compared it to a "zip gun" made from a waterpipe. When you're shooting a 50BMG, you don't go cheap.

I'm not a gun nut but I've seen 50 cal guns before and this looks very flimsy, like a home made thing.

That SLAP round would have wrecked just about anything. An estimated 35,000 PSI over-pressure takes out any margin of safety.

SLAP rounds have had a bad reputation as people wanting to push the projectile even faster. I wouldn't shoot it in any of my deer rifles.
