Rocket attacks in Israel

Mon May 10, 2021 11:51 pm

It has been an eventful month in Jerusalem, with continued police actions against uprising by Palestinians who are being forcibly evicted from East Jerusalem. This culminated in rocket attacks from Hamas in Gaza, and airstrikes from the IDF in response.

https://www.timesofisrael.com/un-securi ... by-us/amp/

https://twitter.com/simonerzim/status/1 ... 16483?s=21

Extremists are fanning the flames on both sides - the Israeli government won’t back down from evictions by force which are illegal under int’l law, and Hamas won’t stop its violent response.

The holy land seems like an unholy place indeed when calls for peace and compromise go unheard.

A couple of developments are disturbing: extremism is on the rise - lamented in this editorial here:

https://www.haaretz.com/opinion/.premiu ... -1.9789919

Influential voices in Israel are now openly saying what has been assumed for years - they cannot deal with criticism from American and European Jews and advocate building support with evangelical Christians instead:

https://www.haaretz.com/us-news/.premiu ... -1.9790303

Not a good day.

Too many people on both sides have made careers out of the problem. Just like in Northern Ireland and even the US (Sharpton, etc.).

Considering there’s no real opposition to Netanyahu’s policies in Israeli politics there’s no way they’re going to stop. Even the opposition Blue and White party now support Netanyahu’s annexation.

Easy solution:
Sterilize all orthodox Jews and Palestinians after the first child. After 40 years one can relax it to two children.
Why can't the world be a little bit more autistic?

Orthodox dogma encourages large families. The official rabbinate and religious courts will never allow your proposal.

I know you are right.

What about liberal Jews and small Palestinian families get Northern Israel, orthodox Jews, large Palestinian families and Hamas can fight it out for the South incl. Jerusalem?

Israel, the country for the Jews, that Jews don't really support anymore. Quite the feat you have to admit. My brother has married a Jewish woman, Israel is a subject best avoided...

That's odd...growing up we were encouraged to discuss it openly and often. Maybe that's why there's such a range of opinion and discourse amongst American Jews.

Would it help to stop the exemption for orthodox jews to do military service? It they have to risk their own, they might become more reasonable and pragmatic.

Sorry, I hope you are joking. Do you really asking for to give a weapon to an religious extremist and send him/her into a war against their arch enemy?

OK, war crimes will be the standard and not the exception.....

I had not considered that. Personally I would think that Israel's military training would beat that out of them, but I suppose with extremists you can never be sure.

The army of Israel is excellent in implementing all soldiers of all groups, even pacifist, accordingly. It is perhaps the best of all armies globally in this.

But with religious ones (one step before orthodox, so just eligible to take part in the army), it has not worked.
When they had build the big wall and when not all gaps were closed, there have been units of snipers, who have actively hunted the children on their way to school, when they have taken a shortcut through the gaps of the wall on their way to school and back (as shortcut).
During intifada and later on, there were units, who have never shot with the rubber ammunition on the extremities (as according rules), only on the head and chest. At that time, the rubber ammunition was as deadly as regular ammunition or even worth, when the chest or head was hit. and distance was "normal" or shorter. On ranges longer than "normal" headshots were deadly and chest hits ended up in best case in intensive care. With these units....there were no cases of wounds at extremities by rubber ammunition.... These units were these, with the highest number of extreme religious members and especially with officers e.g. who were more religious as average in the army.

Extremists in war as soldiers are always shit, either they will produce war crimes....or they kill themselves as they do not care of their own live. Religious extremism is just one of several forms of extremism....

Please note, I have no sources/links, these were news, newspapers or TV one decade or decades ago, like German weekly news "Spiegel" or the non commercial TV in Germany.

Pretty terrible performance by the State Dept spokesperson here under questioning from journalists:

https://twitter.com/mehdirhasan/status/ ... 04033?s=21

He weaseled around not answering whether Palestinians have a right to self defense.

Things are going poorly on the diplomatic front, and a barrage of rocket fire is causing damage all over.

https://www.reuters.com/world/middle-ea ... 021-05-11/

We are now carrying out our promise," Hamas's armed wing said in a statement. "The Qassam Brigades are launching their biggest rocket strike against Tel Aviv and its suburbs, with 130 rockets, in response to the enemy’s targeting of residential towers."

Hours earlier, Israel had sent 80 jets to bomb Gaza and massed tanks on the border as rocket barrages hit Israeli towns for a second day, deepening a conflict in which at least 28 people in the Palestinian enclave and two in Israel have been killed.

Residents of the block and people living nearby had been warned to evacuate the area around an hour before the air strike, according to witnesses, and there were no reports of casualties two hours after it collapsed.

This will either get worse or not, depending on how the current court proceeding go in Jerusalem. It could be a long summer as that court case schedules the current eviction for Aug 1.

Then please explain how Biden has anything to do with a Palestinian Election and an upcoming Israeli court case? Because Time Hacks make no sense in your partisan US government attacks on a foreign issue. Unless you want to admit that the Fraudster Trump and his SIL basically abandoned a two state solution.

Maybe Israeli Government should stop flouting international law, creating interior apartheid states, and opposing any solution to the matter. Maybe they should stop killing innocents and removing people from holy sites during Ramadan, Eid is tomorrow. They should be sanctioned, just as South Africa's apartheid government was.

Hamas and the PA long ago abandoned the “two-state” solution—Every administration from Clinton to Obama considered the two-state solution as baseline requirement, the Palestinians have rejected it repeatedly. Trump went in another direction, admitting reality that Jerusalem was the capital, the rejectionist Palestinians weren’t agreeable to ANY solution and assisted in the Abraham Agreement. The Arabs have even given up on a two-state solution.

What’s Biden have to do with it? Hamas is finding out if they can get him to abandon the Israelis. They dont have a prayer without that division and the deep state Arabists in the Democratic Party are likely prove Hamas right.

So Trump and yourself are advocating racism and nationalism correct? This issue of two states must happen, as Israeli law currently allows for apartheid as many have stated. The Palestinians have no rights to home ownership based on ancestral or current ownership when the Israeli's want to claim the land as theirs.

Lots of oversimplification here. Completely left out the power struggle between Fatah and Hamas, their icing out of more peaceful opposition groups, and the fact this summer’s elections will be the first in *10* years. Abbas has remained atop the PNA 12 years past expiry of his term, and Hamas has not recognized his authority since 2009.

Meanwhile average Palestinian citizens still have only three basic truths: being walled in, having a useless government, and increasingly dire living conditions (including illegal eviction by force).

Going nowhere good - as predicted. More Israeli airstrikes on residential areas in Gaza, followed by rocket attacks on suburbs of TLV. Now Hamas saying further airstrikes will be met with more rockets. Israel just hit a large apartment building in Gaza. Around and around we go.

The airstrikes generally go for where the leadership is, and where the rockets were launched from. The rockets are mostly being taken out by The IDF. It does make one wonder how much Iran is pushing this latest unrest to prop up Hamas.

No one is wondering that I am aware.
That was clearly evident during the Obama/Biden administration.
Right on target with my 120days of Biden in office prediction. Once Iran knew that Biden started negotiating for release of prisoners and offered relaxing of sanctions that was the clue for Iran to give the go ahead for Hamas. Iran either knew Biden was going to be weak or possibly encouraged.

The eviction decisions are asinine since of course Palestinian claims on vast swaths of the country of Israel are never enforced... It only works one way. What's mine is mine and what's yours is mine, too.

Arab countries recognized Israel. That was peace. In many ways still is as it ensures communication to end the current issues.

My whole life we waited for the Arab countries to recognize Israel. That finally happened. This open conflict during Covid-19 will only increase the misery.

Trump's Abraham accords were blown out of proportion. Only Bahrain, Sudan, UAE and Morocco normalised relations. Most of them had diplomatic contact well before Trump came to power, and they had also never fired a shot at each other or were threatening to go to war so the accords in no wat increased the level of peace. If anything it was more about Israelis and these Arab states being able to co-operate militarily against Iran so in the long run they'll probably decrease the chances of peace rather than increase it.

The vast majority of Arab and Islamic states still do not diplomatically recognise Israel and Trump's son in law's pathetic attempts did not change that.

Very accurate analysis. As many editorials from around the ME indicated, all the Abraham accord did was codify existing diplomatic contacts to enhance financial and strategic ties - most importantly, without upsetting home populations in the named countries too much. Any diplomacy is good, but the achievement narrative was OTT, basically a PR exercise by Kushner and the UAE’s bin Zahyed al Nahyan.

Let's not forget the current violence is a result of Israeli plans to expel Palestinians from their homes in East Jerusalem where they've been since they were kicked out of other parts of the country in 1948.

The Israeli's are saying it's legal under Israeli law, but as many have pointed out if the law is to be applied equally then Palestinians have the legal right to reclaim their previous homes in West Jerusalem and the other parts of Israel. Of course everyone knows that's not going to happen, it's all one sided so it's either accept being kicked out of your home or resist.

Exacerbating this was a far right Israeli politician going that Palestinian neighborhood and saying that Israeli police should "open fire" on Palestinians protesting their removal.

Which incited gun-toting settlers to pull Palestinians out of their cars and assault them. How pious

My whole life we waited for the Arab countries to recognize Israel. That finally happened. This open conflict during Covid-19 will only increase the misery.

I'll support democracy.

Lightsaber

Trump's Abraham accords were blown out of proportion. Only Bahrain, Sudan, UAE and Morocco normalised relations.

Imagine if Obama or Jimmy "Hamas" Carter achieved just a fraction of that. They would be getting Nobel Peace Prize award subsctiption for the next decade.

Patently false and disingenuous. The Abraham accord cannot be awarded the prize because critical to its signing was the $23B arms deal with UAE. That violates Alfred Nobel's charter criteria. :boggled:

Carter: Got a peace deal between Egypt and Israel which had been fighting a full blown war with each other just 5 years before.

Trump: Got business and military co-operation deals between Israel and a handful of Islamic nations, apart from UAE none really strategically important, and none of the nations had ever fired a shot at each other and most had diplomatic relations with Israel for decades.

There's no comparison despite how much Trump lovers want to paint him as a peacemaker.

Am I the only one who sees that this is nothing more than Bibi Netanyahu trying to get support since he has failed to form a government and is likely to face another election?

Works perfectly for Hamas too since they have nothing to gain from PA elections being held this year. Put off the inevitable...

And Morocco got recognition to their claim to West Sahara in the package.

Pretty neat for them.

Why does the US have to support Israel, it provides no benefit to them apart from GOP getting the fundamentalist pro Israel vote. The rest of the world is slowly turning against Israel, all we need to do is enforce an embargo. If the US can embargo Cuba for no valid reason, slapping one on Israel is a no brainer.

Okie

Once Hamas backed the jihadists in Syria and not the government Iran cut ties as far as I know. Syria kicked out any Hamas members.
