Latest in the Honolulu Rail Transit Saga: Train Wheels Too Narrow

Wed May 12, 2021 1:23 am

https://www.masstransitmag.com/rail/inf ... s-too-wide

This project has already had several delays and budget overruns, and now either all the train wheels have to be replaced or the rail has to be replaced. The first phase of the project, whenever it opens, won't even serve Downtown Honolulu.

America just can’t seem to get good urban transportation done anymore - not in large cities anyway. Some good examples though in smaller places like Eugene, Hartford, and Richmond.

Considering how long we've built railroads you would think something like this wouldn't happen.

The local politicians get in the way of what the transportation experts recommend. Transit should be planned by independent technical panels, not politicians.

Okay, so the only thing I can do on this is LOL. Seriously? Dear God.
Funny. It only took one pandemic for those who argue endlessly about natural selection to stop believing in natural selection.

Perhaps an intentional project sabotage much like that politician in Massachusetts that allowed the Hilton Hotel to be built in front of that then-new runway at Logan?

Though I do recall Honolulu having a decent bus transit system that's friendly for tourist use.

We rented a car when we were in HNL but I did check out the transit service and it seemed clunky to use. It serves all the major points but it just seemed awkward.

Define awkward. Like was the bus frequency not often enough, the routings were weird so that getting somewhere took longer than it should, or something else?

Rail is hard. Even after 200 years of experience it's not easy to get gauge and wheel combinations right, especially in passenger trains. Let's face it, this isn't like re-using rocket boosters 10 times in row. But hats off to the team, I understand they aren't giving up. Apparently the local government was able to procure a tape measure and that's always a great first step.

The frequency seemed fine in Honolulu. They covered the entire island of Oahu so that is fine. I had problems navigating the web site and the system maps at the transit center. But, again, we had a car so it was not a big deal. Transit is something I enjoy and the Honolulu transit system just seemed awkward to me.
